As some of you may remember after a few games in 2007 I voiced concern over the decision making and sloooow release. I am also one who wanted Campbell to have a full season to show that he was (or is not) our QB of the future - Campbell deserves the next 2 games BUT we will need another alternative to Brennan to see who is going to lead our team at QB next year - I think we should get an established QB that can lead our team as we also find out if Brennan has what it takes. IMO it would be a mistake to have 2 young QBs and only Campbell as an experienced backup as that is what I think he will be in 2009.
Blache will also get some help to keep up the good job he has done with our defense this year.
The NFC East defenses at present are playing very well and would make any team a contender with a decent offense.
SkinsJock, I remember very well last year when you and I both had reservations about Jason Campbell. And it's funny, really, how similar the situation was to this year, and the arguments for and against Campbell are almost identical.
But I don't see Campbell as ever being a backup QB for the Redskins. His contract is up next year, and there is no way he or his agent would sign for a significantly reduced contract.....and I don't see signing him to a big contract based on his performance.
If the decision is made that Campbell is not the log term answer, he'll need to be moved in the off season while he's still under contract, and may still have some value. If we keep him until the contract expires, we'll be stuck with releasing him (get nothing in return) or paying too much to keep him.
As for his status as the starter for the remaining 2 games, I'm of mixed opinion on this. I totally disagree that Campbell "deserves" to finish the season.....he's had more than a fair chance to prove himself, and the Redskins owe him notta. But a change now seems like locking the barn door after the horses are already gone.
It would be nice to see Brennan play (just to evaluate his potential) but how beneficial it would be at this stage is questionable, not to mention the politics and other implications of benching Campbell while there is still a mathematical chance of extending the season (however remote and unlikely). Benching Campbell would taint his value (if you were considering trading him); while it would look like a desperation move or an act of throwing in the towel, none of which would be desirable.
Benching Campbell should have happeed three weeks ago if it was goin to happen this year. I see the only option as continuing to play him.....but not because HE "deserves" to finish the season.
