The Trade

Post by Gibbs4Life »

One option Cerrato has to look at is trading something we have of value for something we value more...

We need the Redskins equivalent of the "Herschel Walker Trade"
Now my first thought was Portis, but he really is the heart of this team and I think outside of 2 #1's and a 3 I wouldn't move him.
Next is Moss, he is probably worth 2 #1's
Then Cooley probably worth #1

If we traded our three best offensive players for equal value we'd theoretically recieve 5 #1 draft picks that's enough for a New OLine, while still keeping Jason, Ladell, Sellers, ARE Thomas Kelly Davis.

Obviously I doubt this kind of action but we are in a tough spot, and 1 or two additions I don't think is enough even if it was Haynesworth and Chad Johnson. Vinny better earn it this offseason, looking forward to Phillip Daniels return.

The patriots gave up a 3rd rounder for randy moss. Santana is not getting TWO number 1's.

This, possibly, is the worst idea I have ever heard.

Moss is 29 -- no #1.
Cooley is a receiving TE -- no #1.
Portis has 3-4 years left.

If we traded those players, in a combined deal. We would get at most 2 #1s and two 3rds --- and would kill our roster ---- all for the "potential" of four drafted players. No good.

Also,in terms of keeping Jason, Ladell, Sellers, ARE, Thomas, Kelly, and Davis and getting rid of moss, cooley, and CP ---- we would have no choice in this scenario and, ultimately, that would be the absolute WORST case scenario. None of them have value and, with the exception of Sellers, none of them have proven they are half decent NFL players.

If we did this, it would take us 5-7 years to rebuild.

Besides, we need to rebuild our front office before we can take care of our players.

What are we going to do because we we're 6-2 with wins in philly and at dallas we beat new orleans and arizona, now we look like its week 1 again or worse the pre-season in carolina. Our line play, my God, somethings got to be done, something drastic

Not to mention all of the salary cap ramifications for next year. Cooley just signed a huge deal, Portis just got a massive signing bonus for restructuring etc. All would accelerate as soon as you trade them.

Yeah here is a bit of information for everyone who always wants to trade away players.

They still count on your salary cap for a good portion of the money. This doesn't matter if you are paying them or not. The salary cap money is not all money that is being paid out.

Most times trading a player causes more salary cap woes then keeping the player. This is why you see so many players that have trade value getting cut.

Big player trades happen about 3-4 times year so dont expect being able to trade 3-4 players from one roster thats absurd.

So there is no trading our way out of this.

That leaves Free Agency and the Draft

We have to clear cap space, I'm sure there are ways to do it

Let's go get Haynesworth and a pass rusher

I think drafting Olineman is the way to go, no more old lineman please

are you for real? the way portis plays, he probably does only have a few years left, i fear for his health after the NFL, he is constantly banged-up due to how he plays... Moss worth two #1's??? Moss wouldn't even be a #1 WR on probably half the teams in the league, if not more. i like moss, but if some team was dumb enough to give us two #1's for moss, that team would probably fold the following year due to a lack of fan support, as the fans would riot... lastly, trade cooley??? he is our most reliable receiver (when thrown to), and is a top 5 TE easily, his stats just don't always show it b/c this offense is pathetic. Put Cooley on a team with an offense (Dallas, NY Giants, Arizona (except you would have to remove either Boldin or Fitzgerald to see the ball), NO, Indianapolis, even the NY Jets, and his #'s would probably lead the league...

trading CC or CP would be detrimental to this team, and probably most true fans... you cannot trade proven stars for potential stars when we already lack sufficient depth at TE and RB (since Davis has not been able to do anything, and Betts hasn't showed flashes of himself from two years ago)...

I do hope that JZ plays the younger guys more on offense though, to start to gauge their potential more...

You mean a team to trade with retarded enough to make it? That WOULD be good. Finding a team that dumb's not easy though. So on to the analysis.

Why don't we trade our 5 OL's for a #1 each? For Samuels we should get a #1 AND a #2 easy. If we can get a #1 and a #2 for ARE we move him and a #1 for Betts would be good. With your 5 first rounders and a third rounder now we have seven more #1s and a couple #2s, we could draft a whole new OL, pick up a speedy #1 and big #2 receiver, a back for Portis and STILL have 3 #1s, a couple #2s and #3 for depth.

:-k I wonder how many #1s we could get for Vinnie.

LMAO@CLL

How about we keep Santana, Cooley, Sellars, 85% of the defense and just trade the rest of the team? No seriously CLL, don't laugh at that!

Because I believe he agreed to sign this years franchise offer with the agreement that he wouldn't be franchised again in 09. I think. Anyone else know for sure?

I bet you we could package Albright, Swishy, and Plackemeiere (aka the special "dream" team package) for 2 #1s and a third.

If you are going to blow this team up, here's who you keep:

Offense:

Campbell, Brennan, Collins
Kelly, Thomas, Thrash, Moss
Cooley, Davis
Portis, Sellers, Cartwright
Heyer, Rabach, Samuels, Thomas, Rinehart, Geisinger

Defense:

Landry, Horton, Moore, Green
Hall, Rogers, Smoot
Fletcher, McIntosh, Fincher, Campbell
Taylor, Evans, Jackson, Wilson, Montgomery, Alexander, Golston, Boscetti,

From this list, you draft and fill with younger free agents. You try to get value for those left off this list. You then address your needs by drafting a stud OL and a stud DL; a late round LB and CB and fill the rest in with younger FA's (OL, LB, CB, TE, P).

we could get a running back to back up portis with a good 4th round pick..... if betts goes. as long as we were playing madden I would trade madden I was an owner for 49 years and got 2 SBs.
the skins could use a young skilled guy drafted 3rd or 4th round to back up portis or to catch out of the backfeild at times but not to take betts position, not just yet, he should get to start ruturning some kicks, until he makes the 2nd string at rb

I just sent all RBs in the draft to lift weights

The only team dumb enough to make that trade is.... the Redskins.

I'm sick of all of this "let's trade so and so". It's ridiculous. There's a reason why not a lot of trades are made in the NFL...because it hurts both teams. Salary caps are built to discourage trades. The only way a guy gets traded basically is if he's made himself so big a nuisance that they can't keep him anymore or resign him. Enter Portis, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens (on multiple stops), etc. This isn't the NBA, where all you have to do is make the money match and everyone is happy.

The reason the Redskins continually are at the bottom is just that reason. We have to go into Free Agency and trades to make any sort of a team for ourselves because our Draft Department is the worst in the league. By going into Free Agency, you're paying top dollar for a player. By going into trading, you're eating into your own salary cap several times and once again paying top dollar for a player. Oh, and we usually throw in some picks to sweeten the deal, and thus increase the spin of our own death spiral.

The Free Agency / Trade strategy that Cerrato and Snyder have done over the past 10 years has shown consistently that you can get an 8-8 or 9-7 team. But never build toward a championship.

Here's an idea. How about we actually try to, I don't know..... BUILD A TEAM.

Our ownership sucks, our management sucks. Snyder has run this team into ground faster than Six Flags due to poor management.

Uttlerly ridiculous!

Moss is not even worth one number one. No team is going to give up there first rounder for our Moss!

Portis might get the consideration. But he has alot of mileage.

If there is any trades , it would be our team giving up the draft picks. Only guy I see who would be worth going after is Calvin Johnson. Then I wouldnt mind our team giving up a first round draft pick. We would have to give up more though.

I would rather get a multi purpose type back/ kick returner and let him get good without fumbling, and to say the rock could fill in for at corner but the corners we have are good enough (hall, rogers, smoot) apperantly springs is cut here so get a FA corner and draft a back
or play sellers and cartwright at running back.

Jesus, there's not going to be any Deus ex machina to save the Redskins. Wishing for a big trade to solve all our problems is like buying a lottery ticket with your last dollar.

Only hard work, shrewd roster management and patience are going to bring the Skins back into prominence.
