The West Wing - Best TV Series Ever?

Post by BigRedskinDaddy »

I know I missed the boat on this one, but Bravo Network has for some years now been showing West Wing re-runs and I've become hooked. Every single episode tugs at my heartstrings in some small way. Every single episode reminds me how so much -- hell, pretty much the rest -- of other series are so ridiculously mind-dumbing as to not be watchable.

If this isn't the best-written dramatic TV series ever, I would like to hear from others what is. I think I may have to bite the bullet and pick up the year by year DVD's and watch it at my leisure. Awesome stuff!

Thoughts?

I loved the show too. I watched the entire series on DVD from beginning to end. It was a liberal wet dream. Not very accurate from a reality perspective. But it was entertaining.

I actually agree with you on all of that.

It was a great show, don't know about best ever, though.

I'll have to check it out. I have never seen it.

My favorite show ever only has 10 espisodes left. Battlestar Galactica! I love Boston legal and the re-runs of Dead Like Me.

But BSG is as a better drama than NYPD Blues, more intense than 24, and better written than any show ever. Problem is it is on that crappy SciFi channel. If Cheers, MASH, Seifeld or Friend had been on that network they wouldn't have lasted three seasons.

I'm not saying "best ever" either, just that I loved it. Did you see the one where Jeb said something like, "the American government GAVE us the richest country on earth!?!?!

Government GAVE it to us? ROTFALMAO

Any Best Ever discussion ought to include The Wire and Band of Brothers both of which show what SHOULD be happening in TV more often but, sadly, isn't.

Has anybody seen The Sons of Anarchy on FX. It's not the best show ever but it is really good.

I liked House, until I realized every episode is exactly the same. Most shows follow a certain formula, but House takes that to another extreme.

That is what I like about Battlestar Gallactica (BSG). You never can tell what is going to happen on the show. Other than things generally don't end great for the humans, but sometimes they do, so you never know.

There are certain shows that I like that follow a certain routine that I still like but it usually has to do with the characters. Shows like NCIS, Boston Legal, the Closer and Smallville all follow the same formula most weeks, but the quirkiness of the characters keep me interested.

Maybe I just didn't watch House enough to develope a liking for any of the characters.

Now anyone that likes a good drama that is extremely well written and very unpredictable owes it to themself to rent the 2004 BSG mini series and watch atleast the first four or five episodes of season 1. If you are not hooked after that, you must not be able to get past the SciFi setting. Because the show is fantastic!

'Deadwood' is my all-time favorite ... not for the kids or those who are turned off by dark shows laced with profanity but my god is it good. The writing is just spectacular, the acting and direction are superb. I am going to start watching 'The Wire' on DVD soon, I am really looking forward to it.

Wire? Hey Fios check out this article about one of the actors on it. I grew up with this guy and he represents the DC area to the max, we call him Big G, enjoy.

My wife and I have watched the first season so far and love it. You're right, it's not for kids though. Great characters.

Wow. I forgot about this thread, and was surprised to see the response it has generated. I am a big L&O guy as well, but with all the incarnations "SVU" and "Criminal Intent" it is a little over-exposed and has been for a while now.

Maybe I went a little overboard with my praise of the West Wing, but I still say it has to be one of the best-written shows that has ever appeared on prime time TV. I'm unfamiliar with the Wire. Anybody out there care to give my a quick idea what it's about? Thanks.

I rarely have any time to watch much TV, but there is one show I always try to catch...

Ghost Hunters on Sci-Fi.

Anyone else like this show? I've become fairly addicted to it. They've collected some very interesting evidence over the past few seasons. Ghost Hunters International is also pretty good.

My wife watches all those types of shows.

Someone should start a pet peeves thread so I can vent about it later....

My wife will turn shows on that I strongly dislike, then fall asleep on them before they're over while the TV keeps me awake...Ghost Hunters is one of those shows.
