A thought on CP and The Tip-Toe Burglar...

Zorn explained after the altercation on the sideline that he calls specific plays for the two backs. He stated that he made calls based on the RB.

I was sitting here wondering if Zorn is starting to insert his running offense into the games... It dawned on me that he may be sneaking in some SEA running plays to help TTTB get some decent yardage.

What do you guys think? It kinda makes sense a bit, especially with CP sitting out of practice a lot.

It's definitely plausible. I've always thought that when you have two different backs like we do, that you tailor the calls they get to their strengths.

Shock. You mean you don't think running sweeps or pitches with Ladell Betts is a smart thing to do?

I think Betts and TTTB are close to the same size so Zorn is calling the same plays but SA isn't running like Betts.

The issue was that CP had an equipment issue and wasn't ready. Zorn calls plays based on who is in. He expected CP to be in but Shaun had to go in his place. Once CP got his helmet fixed he tried to get back in the game on his own but can no longer do that. He must report to Stump and then Stump reports to Zorn to let him know that CP is available. I assume that is in place so that Zorn can plan his plays ahead of time.

It was nowhere near as bad as the announcers assumed it was and it wasn't about jealousy.

I would think Zorn could have seen him comming off the field to call a play for SA. But, what do I know, maybe its hard to tell from the view you get on the sideline.

I think its good that CP has to check in, before going in. I think its a way for Zorn to remain in control. A head coach has to be in total control IMO.

I don't know what I find more ridiculous - the commentators over-amplifying the situation to the degree that they did, or the fact that Zorn is for some reason 'miffed'.

I wonder why a running back would even think about coming off the field without telling his coach?

You'd think that Portis had the stroke to call his own plays or something.

That's why hierarchies exists. You take the crunchy with the smooth. I personally thought Zorn's reaction was overkill - so much so that I thought it seemed like a calculated act.



As for Alexander, I actually thought he ran well. Two of his runs were for ZERO yardage but he had to break several tackles just to get back to the LOS. he didn't run like an MVP, but he didn't look like a chump off the street either.

Part of it is about control. Most of it is about having the right play called for the right RB. Some of us (those against the SA signing) knew already that SA was not the same type of runner as Portis or Betts. Portis was a finess runner in Denver with the zone blocking. He was turned into a power back by Gibbs with his man blocking and had Portis gain weight. Betts was more of a back that Gibbs needed...a between the tackle power back (minus his fumble ability).

When Al Saunders was hired he had Portis try to lose weight which I think didn't help Portis.

Zorn gets the job and now Portis is trying to be a combination of what he was in Denver and here. I honestly don't think Portis will be the Shifty back he used to be in Denver but he is excellent with what he is doing now.

SA is a different kinda RB. I always thought and I could be wrong but I thought most of his yardage was to the outside beating the ends and LB's. Catching passes out of the back field. Fortunatly or unfortunatly now we have 4 different RB with 4 different styles of running. except Portis and Betts are probably closest to being the most similar.

or I'm wrong who cares. I always felt the TTB was soft and could not pound the ball. Maybe he will prove me wrong and do something special when he gets to know the plays better and blocking schemes. but that's exactly why there are different plays for different RB cause SA is not a power RB between the tackles type and Zorn has to know who's in to call the proper play.

Sorry for posting so soon again...but I'd like to add I would hold the position caoch responsible. Portis gets up off the field and at the last minute notices something wrong with his equipement and waves his hand saying I'm coming off the field. Hell, SA knew to go in so people saw Portis coming out. The Position coach should have ran over to Zorn and said hey ...Portis is waving to come out you might want to change the play send it in with SA.

It describes his running style; up on his toes and always lifting his knees high, even when he's waiting for a hole to open up. Makes him look like he's tip-toeing.
