(CNN) -- Paul Newman, the legendary actor whose steely blue eyes, good-humored charm and advocacy of worthy causes made him one of the most renowned figures in American arts, has died of cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83.
A real shame - one fo the all-time greats is gone. He was a Hollywood rarity in that he was an actor that could actually act. Made a fine carton of lemonade too, so he did!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.
I don't have an ultimate favorite film, but if I had to list the top 5 Cool Hand Luke is one of them. I also find myself watching The Sting a couple of times a year, and I enjoy Newman in just about all of his work. A great man with a great sense of dignity and humility.
I was home visiting my dad when I got the news, and dad and I watched The Sting that afternoon.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid along with Slap Shot were among my favorites... he was truly an American icon.
