Horton Named NFC Defensive Player of Week

Rookie safety Chris Horton has been named the NFC defensive player of the week, the NFL announced this afternoon.

"I want to thank the National Football League for this tremendous honor," Horton said in a statement released by the league. "I feel truly blessed to have the game that I did last Sunday. My coaches prepared me and had enough confidence in me to give me this opportunity. I give the credit to my teammates who forced those turnovers and put me in a position to make plays."

Horton was sensational in his debut as a starter (he played briefly in a season-opening loss to the New York Giants), intercepting two passes, being credited with two solo tackles and recovering a fumble in Washington's 29-24 victory. His second interception of Saints quarterback Drew Brees in the fourth quarter all but sealed the Redskins' first victory of the season and the first win for rookie head coach Jim Zorn.

"He had a tremendous day out there," LaRon Landry said. "He did everything I thought he would do." Horton, selected in the seventh round from UCLA, is the first Redskins rookie with two interceptions and a fumble recovery in the same game since Brig Owens in 1966, according to the team's public relations office.

Shortly before kickoff against the Saints, safeties coach Steve Jackson pulled Horton aside and told him he would make his first NFL start because strong safety Reed Doughty had flu-like symptoms.

In the FedEx Field locker room, Jackson and Landry told Horton the game would be unlike what he had experienced in the preseason.

"Coach Jack and I told him, 'Look, the speed is totally different now. You've got to go out there and really ball,'" Landry recalled. "He said, 'Don't worry about this. I got this. I'm good. I'm good.' That's what he kept saying. You know what? He was right."

I know the coaches said Doughty was still the starter, but I gotta think behind the scenes and in coaches meetings this would have to be a tough call.

I'm thrilled for Horton. I've been high on him since the HOF game against the Colts. He definitely appears to be a gamer. I watched the game again today on the "NFL Shorts" and he was making plays and flying all over the place. Horton was a good draft pick. He's physical, and even in his first NFL start, seems to have an understanding of the game.

Agreed. I was watching his post game presser, and he really seems like a genuinely nice, humble guy. After the preseason he had, and then this past Sunday (game and interview), he is quickly becoming one of my favorite players.

Horton reminds me somewhat of the fierce Alvin Walton. Bigger body, but he plays -- just as AW did -- both faster and bigger than he is. And just like #40, #48 brings it from the top of his B&G helmet to the tips of his toes when he lays the wood to somebody.

This kid is gonna do some very good things for us back there IMHO.

Hi I am new to the forum, and just wanted to say that I loved Horton's game against the Saints. tipped balls or not, he made the plays when he was in position to do so. I could see him splitting time with Doughty.

It couldn't possibly be that Cerrato isn't nearly the idiot that Dan Snyder makes him appear to be, or that he might actually know what he's doing. It also couldn't be that Horton was talented before ST was murdered. No, it has to be telepathy from the dead guy. IF Sean Taylor is looking down from the mysterious above, I'd bet the house and the farm that his priorities don't lie with finding the Redskins his replacement.

In more realistic news, Horton may start alongside Landry this week in a two cornerback, three safety package that includes Doughty at strong safety, and both Landry and Horton at free safety. That package would compensate for the hip injury to Fred Smoot. It would also make most receivers think twice about going over the deep middle of the field, IMO.

Is that really necessary? Obviously, all the Sean Taylor comments are just wishful thinking, but they're harmless and are more a tribute to the solid game that Horton had.

I want to see a few more games from Horton, but any safety that comes and plays for the Redskins in Taylor's old position is going to be compared to him at some point -- fair or unfair, it's just common sense because of the tragedy that happened. And that's not taking anything away from Cerrato or Horton himself.

I recognize that Cerrato did a decent job in the draft. Its not old news that Snyder tampers with the team a little more than he should.
