But despite the changes that have come as part of the natural maturation process over his career, one constant remains: Springs is still the shutdown cornerback he always has been.
He isn't. With today's NFL rules that favor receivers there really is no such thing as a "shutdown" corner anymore. Springs, however, is the only cb on our roster that even comes close to fitting that mold.

Shawn was targeted and torched in Seattle, also if you noticed the first play for Carolina's 1st team was sending Steve Smith blazing past him, the ball was overthrown but Shawn was beat, he doesn't have the speed to run with really athletic recievers. Having said that he is savvy, he will jump short to intermediate routes, he can recognize routes before they happen, great anticipation, and he has really bulked up this off-season doing some boxing training, the jury is still out on whether he will be a positive or negative for us this season but is he a "shut down" on a island DB absolutely not.
Shut down corners don't exist ask Champ Bailey who has been getting spanked all last season.
Yet, look at the Giants secondary who are garbage... Their pass rush allowed them to reign in the Patriots.
- Shawn Springs is still our best corner.
- He can be left alone on an island.
- When he is on the field you have 1 WR that is pretty much not even going to be considered by the opposing QB.

Just b/c he's lost a step or 2, I still think he's our best option. You can lean the safety his way on a fly/post patterns. The majority of routes are not based solely on speed, it's only a portion of it. That's where Springs' skills come into play.

RIP #21 Sean Taylor. You will be loved and adored by Redskins fans forever!!!!!

The National Anthem sucks.
What a useless piece of propagandist rhetoric that is.
Players of his caliber have longevity because they're so much better than the general crowd that when they decline they're coming down from elite/above average to above average/average.
Their wisdom and veteran savvy allows them to use the mental side of the game to make up for any physical lack.
There isn't a DB in this league that can stop any/every WR all day long without help from the team. People still fail to realize the hand to hand effort that goes on between the pass rush and the secondary. IMHO we've been blessed to not get torched more than we have in the past. The elite physical ability of Sean Taylor allowed this defense to get by and often come out on top when they should have been burnt for TD (2007 Green Bay comes to mind).
Now that we potentially have some semblance of a pass rush, I'd expect to see improvement in the DB play. They'll be able to be more aggressive.
Listen to the NFL Network commercial, Strahan says you typically have 2.5-3 seconds to get to a QB... We were giving up 5, 6, 7 seconds in the past and that's not exaggerated. We'll have help for our DB's this year, hopefully. And if that help comes through, Shawn and the rest should be able to shine.
If the pass rush is consistent and a force and they don't deliver...then they have no more excuses...
no, I don't think there is a true shutdown corner in this league. I think Deion in his prime and Green were the last two in my opinion. I think he is a very good corner and one of the best.
A shutdown corner takes half of the field out of the passing game. Nobody does that anymore. Sean Taylor would have been the first Shutdown Free Safety, IMO. He took the deep pass away on both sides of the field. Opposing teams were getting to where they threw away from ST. That's what a shutdown defensive back is, and there isn't one in the NFL right now, IMO.

Our Secondary has 3 former first round picks: Springs, Landry and Carlos.
Smoot is a second.
Springs is the most experienced and it shows a ton.
In the past, Gregg Williams would not leave him on an island if he didn´t trust his skills. He´s that good.
He´s been one of the better free agent aquisitions of late, in my opinion.

Nobody is arguing Springs value to the Redskins.
In fact, the Skins will miss him badly when he retires.
But he is not a shutdown corner, and that was the question.

There is a rumor floating around the internet that Springs hasn't recovered from his strained calf, and won't play tomorrow night. Has anyone seen or heard this? I can't seem to confirm it.

I read somewhere today (slow day at work, so I read a lot of different sites) that he may sit as well. Take it for what it is since I don't have a link.
here's something on page 1 of google:
Ryan O'Halloran, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins CB Shawn Springs (calf) is considered probable and expected to play in Week 1.
Carlos did a fine job tonight. Good coverage, good speed, I just wish he also had good hands
No, he didn't do a fine job tonite. He dropped at LEAST two INT IN HIS HANDS. We dropped 4 INTS that the DBs got excited about.
He did do a fine job. Those passes could have been in the WR's hands instead.
It's icing on the cake for DB's to make a ton of interceptions. We already know he's not a good catcher, so considering the circumstances he was placed in, he did a HECK OF A GREAT JOB.
Our #1 DB was out...
Our #2 DB (due to injury) got hurt during the game...
So Carlos who just came back 6 months early from a devastating knee reconstruction had to be our #1 and had to cover Burress (who dismantled the Pats) and you wanna complain??
Please, give me a break. Our offense scored 7 points. Those 4 picks we left on the field would have been 4 more 3&outs. If Carlos would have picked that 1 and ran it in for a TD, we still would have loss by 2.

Everyone, including Carlos, wishes he had better hands, but if he did then he'd be a wide receiver, not a defensive back. I'd say he did more than anyone could have expected under the circumstances. Both Springs and Smoot were out of the game, and no one with experience was backing Carlos. Even Landry was out for a while with Horton playing free safety.
And the defense still only gave up one touchdown.
Of all the people to blame for the outcome of this game, Carlos is at the bottom of my list.

Smoot's first drop would have prevented a touchdown. Couple that with ONE of Roger's TWO that he had hit him in the hands, and it's a totally different picture. I'm not criticizing his coverage, i'm criticizing the fact that TWO footballs hit him in the hands. The one where he was already full speed, he WOULD have scored 6. Add that and subtract the 6 for Smoot's drop, and I think that would have us up by more than a FG.
For the record, I think Rogers was better in coverage than Smoot, and anyone who's been here more than a few days knows I'm not a Rogers fan. Hopefully he's coming into his draft position!
