The Axe Man Cometh Today

Post by GSPODS »

The Redskins’ roster currently stands at 75. The team must cut 22 players by Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.

NFL teams have until Saturday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. to finalize their rosters.

For the Redskins, 5-6 players are on the bubble, head coach Jim Zorn said.

“It’s going to be very difficult,” Zorn said. “I could get it pared down a little bit, but there are a handful of guys that we need to meet on. Each guy has his own unique situation in how he fits in with the team.”

Decisions are likely to come down to whether the team opts to keep extra offensive or defensive linemen versus an extra running back or defensive back.

Players eligible for the eight-member practice squad are also taken into account when deciding how many to keep at a position.

In his Friday press conference, Zorn cited Alfred Fincher, Erasmus James and Billy McMullen as preseason standouts and players who may have made their way onto the roster.

“There were also some pretty good performances that looked good from a physical standpoint, but fell down from a mental standpoint,” Zorn said.

Zorn and the assistant coaches are expected to meet with executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato and director of player personnel Scott Campbell to determine roster spots.

Athletic trainers are expected to be involved as well in discussing the status of injured players.

For Zorn, it is his first time going through the roster process as a head coach.

He admits it’s tough to tell a player he won’t be a Redskin, but he maintains a positive approach to it.

“The thing that makes it doable--I tell these guys it’s not the end of your career, it’s a change of direction for you,” Zorn said. “For some guys, getting cut may help them get on to their next career.

“These guys have made a great effort and they have sacrificed. There might be guys who fit in with another team down the road.”

There's my guess on the 22.
*IF Kelly goes on PUP / IR, Mix makes the roster.

My 2 cents

There's my guess on the 22.
*IF Kelly goes on PUP / IR, Mix makes the roster.

I was gonna do the same thing and break down the two sides, but after seeing your list...All I have to do is say ditto. Although, I like Maurice Mann over Anthony Mix if Kelly goes on the IR/PUP

I don't know where but I see Matterial Richardson finding a way to make the squad. That guy played press coverage in all of college and fared very well in the 4 games I saw. If Kelly goes to IR, there will be a push for him in my book.

REDSKINS CUT WADE, FROST, MASON

Posted by Michael David Smith on August 30, 2008, 1:41 p.m.
As the Washington Redskins move toward finalizing their 53-man roster, a few players have been sent packing.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Redskins’ cuts included offensive lineman Todd Wade, punter Derrick Frost and running back Marcus Mason.

The decision to cut Frost means Durant Brooks, a rookie sixth-round pick out of Georgia Tech, won the preseason punting competition.

And while preseason means something to punters, it doesn’t mean much to running backs: The Redskins cut Mason even though he led the NFL in rushing this preseason.

Somebody will pick up Mason.
That was one that will probably haunt the Redskins front office.
And it was not expected.

He will not clear waivers... This is a decision that will return to bite us, I think.

I was reading in the paper today about this dwarf that got pick pocketed. How could anyone stoop so low?

A couple of surprises there, I think.

Mason & McMullen.

All 10 Draft Picks survived the Final Cuts.

Ok so the axe man came-eth. I love Brooks over Frost because Frost has a tendency to shank. I also think cutting mason was necessary because he wasn't going to ever see the field. But one name I would have liked to see cut was reed doughty, wishfull thinking I suppose. After that I think you have to worry about the wideout position...Devin and Malcom have done Zilch, Nothing, Nada, while McMullen put up numbers and Mann scored a td. It goes without saying there is a team in our division that plays in texas that is scouring the cut lists for good WR's and two of the best availible know our playbook. I'm excited to get the season started but not so much to see Billy McDallas.

i wouldve liked to see mcmullen make the team but we just have to many WR's. of course i wouldve loved to see mason make it but he will get his chance somewhere else. the rest really didnt surprise me.

anyone else think that justin tryon is lucky that we have no other CBs to replace him because he has looked pretty bad in the preseason?

Zorn said he'd keep 6, I thought maybe even 7 with Kelly sidelined but I only count five on the roster as of now.

I am bummed to see us keep Justin Tryon. The kid got burned on just about every play. He needs to move in with Daryl Green to learn how to play the position as a vertically challenged competitor.

Richardson would have been my choice due to the fact that he played so well in the preseason. He will be on someone's 53 this year.

Maybe the WR cuts are a good sign the Kelly will be able to play and contribute earlier than originally thought. I am really bummed to see Tryon make the team he played awful in the preseason.

Either our staff has seen Tryon perform in practice or as keeping all our draft picks would suggest their is alittle pressure from our GM to keep his draft picks.

Or the Staff has no clue what they are doing, and they are guessing based upon gut feelings, which I hate. C'mon. They kept Tryon over Mason? And, they are guessing. Almost none of this coaching staff has had this responsibility before. I really hope I'm wrong but my Spidey Sense is tingling, and it's telling me the Redskins should have kept Mason and McMullen, and probably Mix.

Maybe it was getting burned so bad for that TD against Jax that sealed his fate. I didn't think Tryon showed that much in the games either. Maybe there will be someone that shows up on another teams cuts that they might pick up.

And as good as Mason showed in the pre-season games, if that RB from Jax, Washington from USC, gets cut, I'd try to get him because he was running over our guys. I'd favor him over Mason if there was a place on the roster for him.
