DC Sports Talk Radio?
Hey everyone, this morning I turned on ESPN Radio on my way in to work, then changed it to Sports Talk 980, and to my surprise it was the same damn broadcast!!!!! Does anyone know what's going on with that? Is there no more Steve Zabe and those guys in the morning? Does this have something to do with Danny's purchase? I'm not too familiar with the details so any help would be appreciated. In the end I tuned into 106.7 WJFK and heard the "Junkies".. whoever they are, but they were doing Redskins stuff so I was pretty happy.

Snyder bought out SportsTalk 980 and now it's ESPN 980. He fired a couple sports talkers and canned a few shows, including the John Riggins Show, I believe.

Dear DC Area Sports Radio Listeners;
Welcome to the new ESPN 980! We hope you’ll enjoy DC’s newest all sports station.
We have combined two all sports stations – Redskins Radio ESPN and the legendary Sportstalk 980 WTEM - to give you Washington DC’s sports Superstation; ESPN 980! We recognize that change can be unsettling, and we realize we can never please everyone, but we want you to know that it is our goal to give you compelling and entertaining sports radio that is both informative and fun. It’s ESPN, it’s great local personalities, and it’s the Washington Redskins on ESPN 980!
Our new lineup on ESPN 980 features the best national programs from the worldwide leader in sports - ESPN - starting with Mike and Mike in the Morning featuring Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic from 6am-10am; The Herd with one of sports radio’s most unique voices Colin Cowherd, 10am-Noon. From Noon until 7pm ESPN 980 is live and local with the sports personalities you’ve come to enjoy. From Noon-2pm, it’s The Locker Room with Rick “Doc” Walker and Kevin Sheehan. From 2pm-4pm it’s the popular John Thompson Show with the legendary hall of fame coach and his opinionated co-hosts Al Koken and Brian Mitchell. From 4pm-7pm it’s the team that’s been driving home with sports fans for several years - The Sports Reporters, featuring Steve Czaban, Andy Pollin, and the area’s elite media members telling it like it is and telling it to your face.
ESPN 980 will be the place to be for interactive sports conversation and the very best sporting events. Every play of every Washington Redskins game will be live on ESPN 980 with over 10 hours of Game Day Coverage and the color commentary of hall of famers Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff along with play by play voice Larry Michael and Rick “Doc” Walker live from the sidelines during every game. And if that’s not enough, we’ll feature the unabashed hot sports opinions of hall of famer John Riggins during our Redskins coverage and throughout all of our programs on ESPN 980.
ESPN 980 is also the home of Washington Wizards basketball, Baltimore Orioles baseball, Virginia Tech football and basketball plus ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, the World Series, the NBA on ESPN, the NBA Finals, The BCS, Monday Night Football, the Super Bowl, The NCAA College Basketball tournament and more. ESPN 980 is your destination for all things sports!
ESPN 980 will also be heard on 92.7FM, 94.3FM and 730am and will be streamed live at our new website; ESPN980.com. In fact, we will soon be introducing a new “Super Stream” media player that will bring you an enhanced on-line listening experience so you can get ESPN 980 wherever you go. In fact ESPN 980 has the exclusive ability to stream the Washington Redskins football games only at ESPN980.com!
We want to thank you for your feedback, it helped us decided the lineup we now have. I’m sure more changes will come but they will come with the intention of making us bigger and better. Time will tell of course. We’re not afraid to make changes, but we’re also not afraid to say when we were wrong, and we count on you to help us with that. I pledge to you that ESPN 980 will be a destination for sports fans and a station that listens to your opinions. We are accessible, and I want to hear from you. If you have any constructive criticism on programming or general thoughts on the station, please email me and I will be happy to reply.
Set a button on your radio for the new ESPN 980 and listen to us at home, at work and in the car. We hope you’ll tune in and give us a chance... we think it will be worth it.
Sincerely,
Dennis Glasgow, VP of Operations

Dan Snyder never ceases to amaze me. It would seem that he bought WTEM so that he could have more control on local media so that there would be less negativity and criticism of management fo the Redskins. In the process, he has taken away programming so he screws the fans who enjoyed the freedom of choice between ESPN Radio and Fox Sports Radio.
If I remember correctly, they used to carry the "Herd", Colin Cowherd show on Sportstalk 980 ( I think it should be called the "Turd") but then went to local programming because the ratings were so bad, now we have to suffer to that horrible show. And again, if I'm not mistaking, The First Team on Fox was beating Mike and Mike in the ratings.
I thought Dan Snyder previously owned a communications company, so why would he settle on buying 3 stations, none of which had good signal. I would have to constantly change stations to get the best signal, that doesn't seem like a smart move. Now he broadcasts his signal which used to be on 3 stations, on 4 stations. 980 being the only constant signal that can be received.
So let's sum this up,
1. You limit the choices sports fans have to listen to sports talk radio in DC. Fans get screwed.
2. You replace a show with higher ratings with a show that had lower head to head ratings. First Team on Fox with Mike and Mike.
3. You bring BACK a show that was taken of the air here in DC because of low ratings. The "Herd".
Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

not as long as snyder gets companies to pay for ads. he'll keep doing it, no matter what the fans think...... as long as he's getting paid. it's simple really, he's trying to create a local monopoly for redskins info.

I totally agree. The thing I can't see is why companies keep dumping good money after bad. 1 playoff win in 10 years isn't exactly setting the league on fire. Changing coaches all the time doesn't help with continuity. When is he going to buy the Washington Post?

that would be as soon as possible. he would just love for you to have to hear his spin on everything. the times would probably be an easier target at first, though, no?Thundersloth wrote:I totally agree. If he does buy the Post, I hope his first acts are to fire Sally Jenkins and Mike Wise. I wouldn't mind seeing the rest of the Skins columnists go either except Tony, I like him. But at least Snyder couldn't make the Washington Post any worse. The Washington Times actually isn't bad, but I refused to buy a paper owned by the Moonies when I lived in the DC area. I didn't think they were doing anything with the paper, it just had to support them somehow to buy it. The Washington Compost is just terrible. Alas for the Washtington Star.
Hail to the Redskins!
