I'll admit that there were not many positives to look at in the Carolina pre-season game.
As much as the TV broadcasters, and print media would like for you to believe that this game really means something...it really doesn't.
Pre-season games are pre-season games. Whether it's week 1, or week 3, it's still just a pre-season game.
The media wanted to hype up the importance of "week 3" as being a preview of all the teams' regular season performance, but even they know that's not 100% true.
Their job is to build hype for the game.
You can't build hype by telling everyone these games don't mean anything so you have to make them sound like they are more than they are.

A preseason game is a prelude to nothing.
If its an idiotic thread, then why bother posting on it?
Both teams were playing their starters. It seemed like Zorn held everybody in there a long time to try and get something going, and they couldn't. The guy wants to know if anybody else is concerned about what it means for the regular season. Big deal.
Maybe somebody can add a list of pre-approved topics of discussion to FAQ and save everybody eles some embarassment.

I agree partially. The games are pre-season, but there's still a progression that you would see, especially implementing a new offense or defense that we haven't seen. There's no switch as soon as the regular season opens up that is flipped, so it does often cause a little bit of worry. I don't think it's be-all-end-all, but I do think that pre-season at this stage (where the starters play more time than any other game) does give a flash of how the team is going to start their season.

I love how everyone is SOOOO CAUTIOUS to get excited about winning pre-season games but GET SOOO INSTANTLY PESSIMISTIC when having bad losses in the pre-season if you are not going to allow yourself to get excited about the Colts game then dont allow yourself to throw away the season over the Panthers game decide how much you care about these games and roll with it and as far as "this was a dress-rehearsel game" I rather have that awful performance now than Sept. 4 and who knows maybe it was just a lack of effort on the O-line or maybe we do suck but who the hell knows until October anyways! Maybe a prelude or maybe in two months from now were all sayin "man we have come a long way from that Panthers game" WAIT TIL THE DAMN SEASON STARTS YOU PESSIMISTS/OPTIMISTS

Suisham made a TD saving tackle.
Oh wait, that means that 10 other guys missed.
Frost boomed some nice punts, but he needs to angle for the corner more.

He outkicked the coverage though.

It is a pre-season game. It does not mean that it does not have some significance but pre-season games are not the measure of a full season. One bad game does not mean any more than the 3 wins before that. The exception to that is to the guys wh0o are trying to make the team. Every play they get in on in a pre-saeson game are vital to them.
By the way, I did not get the game broadcast and was watching on NFL Network. Per NFL network, Sean Shuisham made an 84 yard field goal that was negated by a penalty. I haven't had a chance to reveiw the recorded version I have to see if it really happened.

Yeah, we went for a FG from our own 33.

As pre-season games go, the Panthers game was the most important from the the standpoint of preparation. It's always been the next to last pre-season game in which teams generally play their starters for a full half as a final tuneup for the regular season. The final pre-season rarely sees any significant action by the starters, and is used to make those final personnel determinations for players on the bubble.
From that standpoint, the Panthers game was not "just a pre-season game" as one might legitimately say of the first 3.
In the key areas where questions exist like how the defense will perform without G. Williams, and how the offense is functioning in Zorn's system, the result was as ugly a game as I've ever seen the Redskins play.
However, one game does not a season make or break. Though I find both extremes (pre-season game are irrelevant and the sky is falling) to be equally idiotic.
The sky might not be falling, but the bandwagon does appear to have four flat tires.

Frost may need to be cut. Sure he has a leg on him, but he only seems to bring it out whenever there's competition for his job. As soon as the competition is gone, he relaxes back into mediocrity.
As for this game having any more meaning than "just a pre-season game," it doesn't.
Zorn's a new coach and he's bringing in a new offense. These pre-season games give him a chance to try things with the team in an environment that is little more than a glorified practice.
Sure, other coaches have the benefit of already having a system in place from the year before, so maybe by week 3 of the preseason they should be a lot closer to being ready, but Zorn has no such luxury.

Preseason means little or nothing.
I don´t think it´s a prelude to how the team will play when it counts.
It´s the same argument I gave a couple of weeks ago: During Spurrier´s first preseason games here the team looked great. By week 8, the leaks where clearly visible and by his second season in DC, you could see the disaster he created.
That´s why it´s called the "pre" season.

One thing about the Panthers that maybe Zorn didn't know about is that they game plan for a preseason game just like a regular season game. That is why they usually have a good preseason record even in the years the team sucks. If we had a game plan it wasn't very good. As you may have noticed Carolina knew how to attack us on both offense and defense. To help them out, our guys didn't play with much enthusiasm or energy. Prelude no, learning experience yes.

Agreed on the media, and from the players standpoint, once the game starts getting out of hand in the pre-season it seems like it would be really hard to psych yourself up to laying it on the line to turn it around. Panicing over any pre-season game is just silly.
Hail to the Redskins!

Is there any reason it can't be both?
Aw, heck. Just call me an optimist.

Or not.
