Umenyiora suffered a torn MCL

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Umenyiora suffered a torn MCL

UH-OH, NO OSI FOR NEW YORK

Posted by Mike Florio on August 24, 2008, 2:25 p.m. EDT
The ability of the New York Giants to defend their Super Bowl title took a major hit on Saturday night.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Umenyiora suffered a torn MCL, and will miss the entire season.

Umenyiora suffered the injury in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Jets. It’s not the first time a key member of the team’s defense was lost for the year in the annual showdown with the team that shares a stadium with the Giants. Several years ago, cornerback Jason Sehorn tore an ACL while returning a kickoff against the Jets. He was never the same after that.

The loss of Umenyiora will prompt immediate speculation that Michael Strahan might be lured out of retirment. It was widely believed that, if the Giants had paid Strahan enough money, he would have returned for another year. Now that Umenyiora is gone, the Giants might be inclined to break the bank to bring back Strahan.

Without Umenyiora or Strahan, look for the Giants to move Mathias Kiwanuka or Justin Tuck (or both) to defensive end on a full-time basis.

Skins Catch A Break Umenyiora Out

Post by Gibbs4Life »

As I went to sleep last night I knew it was a toss up between Jason Taylor and Osi Umenyiora, one of them I just knew was done. Well, the Redskins have caught a huge break with the news that on September 4th when we visit Giants stadium and look across that line we won't see 72. And in all likelyhood JT will be ready to rock n' roll.
As embarassing as last night was if you would have told me that the Giants would lose their best defensive player but we'd have to get crushed by the panthers I'd say so be it. Now NewYork can get a taste of what it's like to have your best defender gone, although ours is never coming back.

It's really sad when the best news in a weekend is that your star DE will "only" be out 10 days-2 weeks.

I would prefer a victory knowing that out team beat the best team the Giants could field.

The Giants still have plenty of depth in the d-line. Don't start your celebration just yet.

He's a damn good player...too bad for them.. But great for us.

True, but he's the best of the bunch (until Tuck starts more than 2 games in a season, and repeats his success from last year, of course).

That's a huge blow to them. That and the near certainty that Eli will revert to Eli, of course

It sucks for anyone to go down, but especially in pre-season. I'm torn about how to feel here. With our temporary and permanent losses last year, I'm not really overjoyed with Osi on IR already.

On a side note, I will take a jab or two at my brother, who just happens to be a Gnats fan.

All I'm suggesting is that folks not go running to put this into the "W" column. I know that the loss of Osi really hurts them, as he makes everyone around him better. But, they are among the teams that are best able to absorb such a hit.

As you, I have absolute confidence that Eli will become "just" Eli once again.

It's being discussed enough that it's been reported that he'd come back for 8 mil for a 6 month contract.

No matter... if he hasn't been working out, who knows what they'd get.

I'm with you, cleg. The players are doing this for a living. The only ones I have no respect for are the ones who are perfectly willing to end someone else's livlihood with a cheap shot themselves, like Muddy Waters. While I have no love for the Giants, they've always to my memory been a clean team and I don't wish anything like this on them.

I'm sure it wouldn't take him taht long to get back into football shape. I'm sure he was on the fence when he retired anyway, this is just another way to fatten his wallet.

I'll say: I read that $8 million was the figure being thrown around.
