Thehogs.net mobile!

Post by Cappster »

It is great! I just purchased a new blackberry and I must say it is a good investment. I can access my favorite internet site from anywhere. I was fortunate to be on my two year refresh cycle with verizon. I highly recommend a BB to everyone.

Just out of curiosity - did you use the version of the message board that is defined specifically for a mobile?

You can find it at: http://www.the-hogs.net/forum/mo/

And we also have a wireless version of some of the site features as well at http://www.the-hogs.net/wireless/

The wireless section needs a couple of updates - but you can read all of THN's articles there, as well as get a roster list on your BB, or view our Redskins transactions database.

When the updates are done, there is also a full schedule and game day previews for your wireless in the section.

I did up the section because as far as I know, there just isn't much Redskin stuff that has been designed and checked on a BB... it isn't even close to perfect, but we thought it would least give people some reference material when they're say... at a game...

I am testing out the mobile site right now as I type. It is quite a bit cleaner to look at without all of the images not to mention is seems faster. I do wish it had the "preview" feature and I would like to see all posts in a thread show up like it does on the regular website. Other than that, it is pretty clean and forward. O! That is my thumbs up since I have no emoticons :)

The wireless forum is just a script that basically strips everything out of the board - unfortunately, I really don't have any control over it, and can't really make modifications - at least not quickly and easily.

So it is, as is. :-)

Honestly, I love the mobile version.

Sure it kinda sux not being able to see pics, or read links, and having to manually filter (look past) all the html stuff, but I understand that is more the fault of the phone's capability than the board's decision.

I have found that I have to perform a browser restart (on my phone) in order to refresh the message boards in the short term, but that's my only real complaint.

Apart from that, I think the mobile version is awesome, and wish more web-sites had a mobile version. I read THN all the time whenever I'm away from my computer.

It's definitely far from perfect, but I just thought it might be a better mobile alternative for some as it obviously chews WAY less bandwidth too - just because your mobile can't show it - doesn't mean that the site isn't trying to serve it.

And while we don't have a lot of stuff in our wireless secion, we do serve up all of our articles there, and a few resources because we found that there just didn't seem to be mobile specific content anywhere for Redskin stuff.

The pages are clean and validated so that hopefully they are easily viewable on virtually any mobile device - the articles and pages are also indexed by Google's mobile spider.

The refresh is probably due to your device settings - check your documentation for your device and see if you can change your 'refresh interval' anywhere - often in Tools>Options. You may find that it can be set to a better number that will solve the problem. A lot of devices will try to load from cache by default, to limit the amount of bandwidth that you draw.

My 2 cents

Zzzzzzzzzz...I am very bored but at least I can surf the net, talk football, and not look at the kids staring at me from accross the doctors office. I again encourage all men who have a woman in their life to get a phone with internet capability.
