Our WR's

Post by BadgerKing »

Well its that time of year when the Badgerking stirs from his long slumber and gets all excited about real football! I have been lurking around the boards as I always do feeling that I have nothing to add to the wealth Redskin knowledge that abounds but I have a question that I need to put to the combined brains

I watched the Hall of Fame Game (yes it was on in the UK) and I note that our rookier WR's have some slight injuries that keep them from playing so far. I also noticed other receivers I have never encountered (free agents? Undrafted?) I would like to find out when we may see our Rookies and also if any of these unknown WR's could make the roster

Here's my take:

Thomas and Kelly are week to week. I think we're all excited to see what these guys are capable of. With their down time, they're not going to be sharp in their first games, but who knows, I've been wrong before.

McMullen appears to want a roster spot bad. He's really showing up any of the other guys fighting for a roster spot, even Mix who I've pulled for all along. As I see it right now, it'll be Moss, ARE, Thrash, Thomas, Kelly. At this point, I think I'd rather see McMullen than Thrash due to age, but Thrash is an exceptional STer. We have Rock for returning kicks and ARE punts, so I don't see Thrash as vital, but he is a ST leader. With that said, if we carry 6 WR, I think McMullen is a shoe-in at this point.

Zorn is really high on Thrash, so I would be surprised if he's not on the roster at the final cut.

I also think that we'll carry 6 WRs, although it might be a bit too early to hand it to McMullen. He's certainly had the best games so far, but Mix I think still has a chance to prove himself. One of the other backups (Toller?) might find a way to step up, as well.

Mix should get the 6th spot due to his special teams abilities.

I think Fred Davis is ready to play week one. The rest of the rookies are week to week. Get them as much reps as they need. If one of the rookies has a breakout game or separates from the pack then start the rookie.

Yoder has played well in the pre-season as well. I think we're deep at TE. I know that Davis will start in front of Yoder definitely by next year, but I like that feeling of being deep at our receiving positions. I would even be comfortable sitting Cooley for the rest of the pre-season and giving David those much needed reps.

ive liked what ive seen from mcmullen. he plays hard but i dont think he will make the roster. im a little disappointed that our rookies didnt come to camp in good enough shape and got hamstring injuries early, kelly's knee you cant do anything about really so that doesnt bother me.

Moss, ARE, Thrash, Thomas and Kelly are all givens.

The battle is for the 6th and final spot and chances are, if one of the remaining incumbents can establish himself on special teams, they may make the squad... and Mix showed last year that he can contribute on teams - so he's my pick for the 6th spot. I agree that McMullen has won the job so far in terms of play, but not by much over Mix.

We're talking about a guy coming in when ALL THREE of our starting receivers have gone down. In my opinion, the team would go out and grab a veteran from somewhere in that instance anyway. How well the 'sixth' performs on ST may actually be MORE important than their impact at WR.

If one of the rookies (Thomas & Kelly) continues to struggle with injury, it's conceivable that he gets 'relegated' to the IR and that opens up another spot.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Mann has shown good, too, but McMullen has outplayed all of the guys fighting for the WR position. As Boss said, #6 will be on ST, and that's where Mix stands out. I don't recall seeing McMullen on ST.

Agreed. Yoder has impressed me. I just forgot about him. He is not a rookie though I think?

Anyhow I am actually feeling good about our receivers and the tight ends.

Yoder's an 8 year vet. He's been with us for the past 2 seasons. Previously he played with the Jags for 2 years and before that Tampa for 4 years. Never been a #1 TE, but he provides for us when called upon!

Well Mix has one broke rib doesnt he? That would dampen his chances I'm thinking. At least over someone that isnt hurt?

Right & that greatly diminishes his chances of making the roster.

Isn't it nice to have a issue with who will actually make the team. IMO these guys are all playing well and it will be a hard decision (for the staff)come cut down time.

Thrash won't get any better, he's on the downside of his career. McMullen is 5 years younger than him. With practice, he can still peak from where he is today.

Apparently, his "downside" is still better tna McMullen's upside. Who's to say that McMullen's peak will be better than Thrash's current staus? Not us.

Favre is on the downside of his career too, but still would've given the Packers the best chance to win NOW, but they were committed to Aaron already, as they should've been. The Skins aren't committed to McMullen just yet.

McMullen's a much better receiver than Thrash is right now and twice the receiver Mix is. Too bad he's always been a head case and slacker. Otherwise, we wouldn't be having this discussion. So far, this season, he's played up to the expectations many had of him coming out of the U of Va. If he continues in the dedicated mode, he could be an important part of the team.

I wouldn't say that just yet. That's what pre-season's for, to see what the players have the CURRENT year. Yes, Zorn is high on Thrash, but he was high on Mix when he first got here, too. I'm not anti-Thrash, but in the new Zorn era, I'm looking for him to build a team that can be togeher for at least a few years, and I'm not seeing Thrash sitck around THAT long at 33 already.

Thrash is a special player, multi-talented and just shows up week after week and plays hard. Not flashy, just does his job and does it well. Mistakes are rare from him and he has added value at KR if needed.

He also makes PLAYs! Very alert and aware of everything going on around him. He deserves a job on the Skins. Mix and McMullen are unproven and the backups are essentially Thomas and Kelly. And, if a sixth receiver makes the roster, whose to say it won't be a FA pickup from another team?

I saw some of McMullen on the Vikes, less of him on the Eagles. He had flashes of being able to do some special things but never put it all together. Remember this is a mental game too and that can't be overlooked. Thrash gets my vote at present and unless he gets hurt, there's no reason to cut him.

I think that 6th WR spot is wide open. I know many here have been high on Mix, and I agree he made a few nice plays on teams last year... actually, only two that I can remember. But we haven't seen anything from him on offense yet, have we? I'm not saying he doesn't have a chance to make the team, just that I've been waiting to see some receptions, which to date, we haven't.
