More Chris Cooley...

Post by Skinsfan55 »

Okay, okay, I love Chris Cooley, I think he's an awesome pick... here's some more stuff on him!

(I guess I can post it here now since he's a Redskin!)

"Chris Cooley, Utah State
Height: 6-3 Weight: 265 Likely Draft Position: Fourth Round Possible Destinations: Steelers, Rams NFL Comparison: Jim Kleinsasser
Cooley is best known for his receiving skills, but he's clearly the best blocker of the top tight end prospects. He won the Golden Helmet Award, which, much to our surprise, is not an honor awarded to porn stars, but instead to the Aggies' hardest hitter. Cooley actually started his college career as a defensive lineman before moving to tight end during his sophomore season. As a senior, he led the nation's tight ends in receptions and yardage. Scouts love his study habits, as he's known for being a film room junkie.

Cooley's biggest flaw is his 4.87 time in the 40-yard dash. And while he was considered a good blocker in college, there is some concern as to whether he's strong enough to be an effective blocker at the next level. Cooley did some long-snapping and played on every special team's unit at Utah State, which will help his cause with teams who are looking for a versatile player. Speaking of versatility, Cooley also spent time playing fullback for Utah State. He has good hands, but we're not sold on his fantasy potential this season. Cooley could start if he ends up on a team in desperate need of a tight end, but he could just as easily spend his rookie season on special teams."

Compared to Jim Kleinsasser? Clint Didier? Reguarded as the best blocker of all the top TE prospects? Hmmmm...

Here's ONE piece of news Jake won't beat me to! lol.

'Skins draft USU's Cooley

Aggie tight end goes in 3rd round, 81st pick overall
By Jay Hinton
Deseret Morning News

Saturday was arguably the biggest day in Chris Cooley's football career, and he missed seeing his selection in the National Football League Draft to the Washington Redskins because he was outside waiting for service on his cell phone.

"My phone lost service inside my house 20 seconds before the pick," Cooley said. "I went outside to get service and everyone in my house started screaming."
Cooley was the 18th pick in the third round (81st overall) to the Redskins.
"It's a dream come true, especially for the last couple of years because I have been working so hard," he said.
Cooley, who shot a 78 on the golf course earlier in the day, was getting a bit worried that his name hadn't appeared. Many prognosticators tabbed Cooley to go in the third round and as the draft went deeper and deeper into the round, he wasn't so sure.
"I still went where I was predicted to go," said Cooley, who was with his wife, mother, brother and some of his brother's friends when his named was finally called.
"I think I would have been disappointed (by not going in the third round). I kind of thought fourth round all along to not get my hopes up too high, but I always thought I would go in the third round," he said.
He was the second player Washington drafted Saturday. Miami free safety Sean Taylor was the fifth pick overall. The Redskins didn't have a second-round pick.
"I love the coaching staff. Joe Gibbs is one of the greatest coaches in the NFL, I think," Cooley said. "It will be an exciting environment to play in."
He was the only player with Utah ties to be taken on the first day of the draft. The final four rounds of the draft will be held today.
Cooley, 6-foot-5, 265 pound, appeared on the radar screen of NFL scouts when he made 22 of his 31 catches in the last four games his junior year two seasons ago.
He led the Aggies with 62 receptions for 732 yards and six touchdowns this season, despite missing two games with a broken ankle.
Cooley entered his senior season on the preseason watch list for the John Mackay Award (the nation's best tight end) and was one of eight semifinalists. The award eventually went to Miami's Kellen Winslow Jr. , who, as expected, was the first tight end taken at No. 6 Saturday by the Cleveland Browns.
Cooley was the sixth tight end selected. Winslow and Georgia's Ben Watson (New England) were taken in the first round. Florida's Ben Troupe (Tennessee) and Pittsburgh's Kris Wilson (Kansas City) were chosen in the second round. Ohio State's Ben Hartsock (Indianapolis) was selected 68th, then Cooley at No. 81 to Washington.
"I went on a trip there and really like it a lot there," Cooley said. " . . . Northern Virginia will be a nice place to live."
He will report to mini-camp Thursday.
Cooley is the second Aggie to be selected in the draft in two years. Wide receiver Kevin Curtis was taken in 2002 draft by the St. Louis Rams. He was the 74th pick overall.

and my friends... that's why going after Troupe or Watson was not important... we got the best blocker, and therefore the most suited player to be a TE in Gibbs' offense.

Giving up next year's second was the regular price to pay, so at least we didn't go nuts to do it.

I think the Skins did really well yesterday with the 2 players they got.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Hey Boss, I got a Q concerning Chris Cooley and the H-back position over on the Football 101 board, care to take a look? I am a little confused.

Oh yeah, I like the blocking, but you gotta love his velcro hands!

Cooley

Post by fleetus »

He's a perfect fit for us! No he isn't going to breakout for a 70 yard TD catch but here are his positives (as I see it):

1. Led nation in receiving as a TE (more than Winslow!)
2. One of the few TE's in the draft with experience out of the backfield (H-back)
3. Excels in special teams play (think Whiny Winslow would've gotten himself dirty on special teams?)
4. Catches everything thrown in his direction (with Gibbs I think this may be the most important aspect)

I agree - I think this guys a great pick up. We definitely didn't need Winslow. This guy can handle all the duties. For our lack of picks, I think the opening day of the draft was great for us.

and, even more importantly to a protection scheme, won his team's blocking award. Bugel will fix any problems with his techniques - trust me.

Yep, Taylor and Cooley address two needs.

I really just pray we address the core of the defense real quick, and not just patchwork like last year. We didn't like those results with mediocre backs having career days did we?

Not perfect

Post by fleetus »

I agree we need to address more needs, but this is the first offseason under Gibbs. He has to turn around mistakes made by Snyder, Spurrier and Schotty over the years. It isn't going to all come together in just a few months. I also agree the OL and DL are the keys to success. The DL still needs work but I think the OL will have a very good year. Bugel and Co. will get Samuels back to Pro bowl form. Jansen is steady. Raymer has returned. Plus, just the improved protection schemes (Spurrier was clueless) will improve greatly. I'm also a strong believer that Offensive Lineman enjoy run blocking (where they can be agressive) more then pass-blocking (where they get pounded on!) Portis will allow them to have alot more fun this year!!!

OL is great. I agree. I think that people who doubt the players we have on the OL are going to be believers half way through the season.

And in turn, with a good running game due to that line, we will have a better defense. I look forward to that... believe me :)

If the guy is anything like Jim Kleinsasser, than I just might have an orgasm. Kleinsasser was the one guy I really wanted, I was crushed when we missed out on him. This is awesome...

Why was he not projected higher with that background on him??

Was it just his 40 time?

You got to love anyone who wins an award called the "Golden Helmet".

Chris Cooley fits the Joe Gibbs style of TE/H Back to a tee!! I can't wait to see him out and practicing(even if it's a lucky picture I find on redskins.com) and playing in a Redskin uniform. Cannot wait for the season to start!!
I figure... If life is all about the choices you make... Then I choose Redskin football, beer and hot wings!!

He also said in his interview he will make the Brown's pay for not selecting him with the 6th pick in the draft. ROTFALMAO j/k

From Mel Kiper, Feb 24th. Updated Combine report-

"Chris Cooley, Utah State- There were some questions about his speed but Cooley came through with a 4.75 in the 40. He also displayed good natural pass recieving skills and a terrific understanding of the position."

Oh man, and immagine him trimming down 10 pounds or so!

Eric Crawford in a special to ESPN places Chris Cooley on the All Sun Belt team.

I have to laugh at this type of double talk analysis.

Is he the "best blocker", or is he a "good" blocker with "some concern as to whether he's strong enough"?????

With the best offensive line coach in the game, Joe Bugel there is little doubt that he will become an elite blocker.

You kinda missed my point. I was cracking on some of the player profiles everyone seems to dig up.

Try phrase searching some of them sometime. One site has seven different players listed as the "best blocking TE". A lot of the reviews are written off of another review and tape on the player was never watched.

He's the perfect fit for our offense and he will most likely start the season as the H-back. He's got excellent hands, decent speed and great size. He's going to be a very productive player, just wait and see.

Starting by week 7 or 8? I Think he'll start week 1. It looks to me like you're giving him a backhanded compliment
