PORTIS OUT OF PRESEASON OPENER?

PORTIS OUT OF PRESEASON OPENER? (9:07 a.m. ET)
When the Redskins open the NFL preseason in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, running back Clinton Portis is unlikely to be in their backfield.

According to the Washington Times, coach Jim Zorn said that Portis is unlikely to see against against the Colts on Aug. 3.

Portis didn't play in any of the Redskins' preseason games last season. In 2006, he separated his shoulder in the team's preseason opener.

He can sit out most of the preseason if you ask me. We need him for the games that count and we don't want history to repeat itself.

probably pre-cautionary. But he turned his ankle yesterday though, might be a little more serious than coach Zorn told the media.

Per JLC,

Clinton Portis, who turned an ankle in the brief morning practice, was back on the field in the afternoon. He went in -- and promptly was blown up (according to Jasno) by H.B. Blades, who knocked him off his feet with a clean hit. Portis popped right up. No harm, no foul.

He seems ok. But it's probably a wise precaution to protect him - from himself.

I don't want to see Portis even in uniform until the Giants game.

I'd like to see the Redskins tell the NFL to kiss off, and skip the preseason crap that always manages to get someone injured. In case no one noticed, Peyton Manning isn't playing the Hall Of Lame Game either.

Doubt it. He was back out for the afternoon practice.
"It's almost like, you play a kid's game for a king's ransom," he said. "And if you don't take it serious enough, eventually one day you're going to say, 'Oh, I could have done this, I could have done that."

True dat!!!! Plus it's CP man, we already know what he can do and I still remember that great tackle he made that got his shoulder messed up to begin with; that dude is a true baller. Let Ladell and the other backs get the playing time in preseason.

See you in September, CP!

Seriously, does anybody want to see him take the field in preseason? I'm sure he hasn't forgotten how to run in the past few months.

I like resting starters & playing new guys a lot in preseason. Had Samuels not been injured during preseason last year, Heyer might never have had the chance to show what he could do.

Excellent point, and speaking of linemen, Chad Rinehart appears to be impressing in practice. I'm sure Joe Bugel and Company would like to see how he does against live competition.

As would I. Ditto Brown & Crummey.

There are only eight offensive linemen on the roster.
I would guess that seven of the eight will make the final roster or the practice squad. I also understand Crummey is working at center. Just what we always wanted. Seriously. Someone other than Pete Kendall or Jon Jansen backing up the center position.

I saw a presser with Zorn yesterday and his sentiment was "you all know, we all know what Clinton can do, there's no sense risking the injury."

Seemed like an excellent point to me.

There are currently 14 OL's on roster.
Rabach, Casey
Brown, Kerry
Clark, Devin
Crummey, Andrew
Geisinger, Justin
Kendall, Pete
Rinehart, Chad
Thomas, Randy
Fabini, Jason
Heyer, Stephon
Jansen, Jon
Samuels, Chris
Wade, Todd
Washington, Tavares

We will keep 8-9. The 5 starters, Heyer & Rinehart are safe. After that it's wide open.

Brain freeze. I meant the Redskins would keep seven or eight of the list I had, which I failed to post with the rest of my drivel. I can see how that makes no sense at all without the list. Your list and mine are the same. It does help when the list is posted though. #-o

"Clinty being Clinty"...? Nah, doesn't work.

I like sitting Portis. I have no problem with that. Once the season starts he'll be ready. But that's where the comparison ends. The difference between him and Manny is that Clinton won't take a vacation in the middle of the season and he'll play hard EVERY SINGLE DOWN, running out the base on every hit, if you will.

I like Manny and he's an amazing hitter, but he's infuriating sometimes.

Yeah, it is pretty well documented that RB's only have so many miles in the tank before they lose the sharp cutting and speed burst that makes the difference between backup and starter. (look at Shawn Alexander right now) So even if it means Portis will need 5 or 6 games to hit his full stride, I would rather him be peak at game 15 and 16 than games 8 and 9.

Thats a shame too. I want the best of both. I want him to sit out preseason and I want him in full stride at game 1.

I'm getting tired of the late season runs for the playoffs. If we didn't always start slow that wouldn't happen.
I firmly believe the Patriots are the antichrist.

I hear ya. Maybe Zorn needs to think about working Betts harder in camp with the thought that they will run him a lot more early in the season. This might confuse some defenses who game plan for Portis. Then increase Portis' workload as the season continues.
