FOXSports.com has learned that the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms on a trade that would send the All-Pro defensive end and reality show star to the 'Skins in exchange for a second-round pick. The teams were hopeful to have the deal finalized later Sunday night.
The move speaks volumes about the severity of the injury sustained by Redskins defensive end Phillip Daniels during the first day of Washington's training camp.
According to reports, Daniels injured his left anterior cruciate ligament during 7-on-7 drills Sunday and it was believed that the injury was season-ending.
Taylor started all 16 games for Miami during the Dolphins' woeful 2007 season. But even as the Dolphins went 1-15, Taylor still showed a glimmer of the ability that made him the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year, leading the team with 11 sacks.
Wow. Not just a 2nd rounder but also a 6th rounder in 2010.
Posted at 6:41 PM ET, 07/20/2008 Skins Trade For Jason Taylor
Vinny Cerrato just announced the Skins acquired Pro Bowl DE Jason Taylor from Miami for a second round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round pick in 2010.
The Skins assume the final two years of Taylor's contract as is, Cerrato said. Taylor has talked about playing just one more season before leaving the NFL for Hollywood, but Cerrato, Washington's executive VP of football operations, said, "I'm 100 percent confident he'll play more than one year.".
Cerrato said he began talking to the Dolphins this afternoon, following Washington's second practice. He said immediately after practice that the Redskins had had no contact with other teams about trades as of that point, so, I guess if you take him at his word this deal came together in like 90 minutes.
Cerrato said the season-ending injuries to starting left end Phillip Daniels and reserve end Alex Buzbee forced Washington to exhaust all options. He said Taylor will move to the left side with Washington - he played right end in Miami - and Andre Carter will remain the starting right end.
"We're fortune there is a guy of that caliber on the market when a guy gets hurt," said Cerrato.
Taylor is a former NFL player of the year who brings elite pass rushing skills, something sorely missing on this line for years (though Carter had a strong season in 2007). Defensive line has long been an area of concern for Washington.
Whatever. Who are all these other options to trade for? Our FO has been very good this offseason. This was an unforeseen circumstance. Do you really expect then to rely on James, Evans, Wilson or Rob Jackson? Them doing nothing would be a stupid move.

But jesus, there goes a 2nd rounder for a guy who has at the MOST 4 years, and that's pushing it. I'm sorely disappointed.
...any given Sunday....
RIP #21 Sean Taylor. You will be loved and adored by Redskins fans forever!!!!!

What a useless piece of propagandist rhetoric that is.

You're late. It's already started.
And IF Taylor plays two seasons, the trade is worth the cost.
The Redskins couldn't draft a decent defensive lineman with the #1 overall pick, no salary cap, and Bobby Beathard's input.
That 2nd rounder would have gone toward something less useful, like another freaking wide receiver. And everyone knows it.

Gee... that's a surprise. 2nd rounders do get 4 year deals. Present us with a better option or move.

Go with what they have. Start Evans opposite Carter and let Jackson and Wilson get some playing time. Also they could have looked for some still unsigned free agents or pursued other trade scenarios. They didn't need to rush into a trade on the same day that Daniels got hurt.
This isn't a Super Bowl contending team. There was no need to trade multiple picks for a 34 year old defensive end that could be gone after just one season.
Dude you guys are crazy. We lost 2 DE's possibly for the season, and you are pissed that we have the sack to pull the trigger on a guy who is 1 year removed from being the defensive player of the year? its not like we did this because we wanted our name in the papers. This is a SERIOUS need, and now we get a guy who will be motivated and happy and also had 11 sacks last year. This is good news to me.

A non Super Bowl contender? That's your opinion. What team enters a season with no expectations, especially one that was in the playoffs the prior year?
Just one season? Okay, keep on with that. Do you really think this trade would happen for one year? Don't you think they would've talked to Jason and confirmed that he'll agree to play for more than one year? Come on dude...
And if they made no move and tried to go with Evens or the rookie, you'd be whining about that too. Just admit it. That's what you do.

Taylor reiterated in an interview last week that he is only planning on playing for one more season. Sure that could change. But I highly doubt that he guaranteed to the Skins that we would play in 2010.

Taylor plays RDE, not LDE, like he will here for us. I highly doubt he will excel....

I guess you missed that. But whatever, you'll probably say something like Cerrato doesn't know anything and try to convince us that Cerrato has yet to speak directly with Taylor to get his word and confirm he'd play more than one year... right?

Which will make things interesting re: any contract restructuring to fit his salary under the cap. Anything the Redskins guarantee to prorate into 2009-2010 will be eligible for forfeit if Taylor decides to retire before the end of the contract, which should leave room for some offseason hilarity next year if Taylor plays well and the Skins want him back.
As for the trade itself? The Skins were backed into a corner. Either they trade for Taylor and try to contend, or decline, and essentially write off the year on the first day of camp. This is still a far better deal than the TJ Duckett trade, or any of the proposed Chad Johnson trades considering either the legitimate team need or Taylor's much greater talent. When you consider both, it's a no-brainer.

I believe that was a misprint. I could be wrong, but doesn't Carter play LDE? I'm pretty sure he does. And even if that report is accurate, Jason has played both positions and it has never slowed him down.

No, I saw that. Means nothing to me. I think that Cerrato is a bumbling moron, so his comments mean nothing to me. Not too many 33, soon to be 34 year old, football players that would guarantee that they are going to be playing two years from now. And for a football team to just assume that a guy is going to be both playing and effective at the age of 35 is asinine.

This off season has been totally different from those of previous years. Jason Taylor may not be such a bad pick-up, even if it is only for one year. At least wait until the 8th game before you guys start tearing the Redskins apart.
