Who are the best defensive linemen in Redskins History?

Who would you say are the Skins best defensive linemen? This is what I say:

As a rookie, Darryl Grant had a 20 yard kick return. That alone makes him memorable. Grant does belong on the list of both the 70 Greatest Redskins and the list of best Redskins defensive linemen. Grant was the impenetrable force if Dave Butz was the immovable object. Brito, Brundige, Talbert, McDole, Butz, Mann, Manley are givens.

I never knew that Mann played for the 49ers much less won a super bowl with them.

Anyway, I vote Manley as my best Redskins D-Lineman.

Daryl Gardner.

Not in the catagory of best Skins linemen but man was this guy a force. I saw him live in SF....man that guy was the biggest man on the field.

How about Bruce Smith ! Ok Just kidding guys My vote goes to Dave Butz.

I am one who gives credit to the men in the trenches. Dave Butz served as basically a Road Block. An immovable force for 12 years on the Skins. Without a good defensive tackle guys like Dexter and Charles have less oppurtunities to go after the passer.

Dexter Manley by far was the most talented and athletic. The guy was a sack machine and good against the run. Darryl Grant has some very memorable moments.

Agreed. Butz was the man. Everyone was better when he played, and teams pretty much gave up trying to run up the middle. He occupied blockers, big time.

My vote for best all time would be him. Diron Talbert would get a special mention, just because he lived (and loved) to hate Dallas.

Best single DL? Oh, nearly impossible to choose one. If I had to, though, I would pick Charles Mann, and point to the first play from scrimmage in the NFC Championship before SB 26. Mann, who was always quiet-looking, tossed the Detroit blocker aside, ran past a bewildered Hall of Fame RB, and knocked Erik Kramer about five yards into the air...and knocked the ball about 10 yards farther. Redskins recovered, scored on the next play (as I play it over in my head :wink:

), and buried the Lions.

However, you all are making me feel guilty by mentioning Dave Butz. Was it Pat Summerall or John Madden who, casually, in a "routine" in-season game, said, "Nobody makes Dave Butz go where he doesn't want to go".

At least we can be rich in memories.

And the Redskins defense became entirely different once Old George got Diron (and McDole and Pardee and Petibon and Pottios and...)

In our memories, at least, we are staggeringly rich.

Here's hoping younger fans can see some players like Butz and Mann and Manley and Grant. I used to get tired of hearing about Sammy Baugh and Cliff Battles when I was a kid and the Redskins were often called the "deadskins"...especially by "turncoat" new-made Baltimore Colt fans after 1958.

Why were ANY of our pair of super DE's (Manley/Mann) EVER left one on one?

For much of their careers, that answer was, they had no choice. They had to double Dave Butz. Talk about a Catch 22...

His presence kept those two free to roam. And, even when doubled, he still often got some himself. I recall at least 2 occasions when he tackled both a lineman AND the ball carrier.

It was Summerall, and he was right.

Dave Butz I still cant get over how big he was. 6-7 300lbs is a beast of a man. To be talented and physically superior is one thing. Add hard work ethic and character and it is just not fair for opposing teams. Dave Butz , I could only wish we could get another one of him. Lets hope on next draft.

Not likely but a guy close to him maybe?
