Malcolm Kelly Signs

The Redskins broke what could be a logjam of potential unsigned second-round picks by signing wide receiver Malcolm Kelly to a four-year, $2.969 million deal.

Included in the deal is $1.655 million of guarantees. Kelly, the 51st selection in the draft, becomes the second second-rounder to reach an agreement.

1. Kelly ran that 4.6 after only a couple of weeks of being cleared from a partially torn quad. Not too shabby if you ask me. He also ran a 4.47 and a 4.5 earlier in the spring.

2. Video evidence unequivocally concludes Kelly never had much problem getting vertical or past defenders in college. Now, everyone knows the speed of defenders is much faster at the pro level, but rarely are receivers running in a straight line trying to flat out beat a defender. Yeah, some like Moss do on occasion, but typically a receivers route includes a move or juke when the defender is backpedaling into coverage, especially for receivers in a west coast system. That's why the draft experts said Kelly was the perfect fit for a west coast system. Explosion off the line and a good move can always create space, even for slower guys.

Kelly has never been known for flat out speed, but he is well known for his quickness and explosion off the line, something Zorn has already noticed and commented on. That type of explosion and quickness can often be more valuable than pure speed... just ask wide receiver... excuse me, kick returner speed demon Jerome Mathis.

3. Kelly wasn't brought in for speed. We already have that in Moss. They were looking for a "possession" receiver. Kelly is amply equipped with the skills necessary to be a quality possession receiver in this league... size, strength and good hands. In fact, Kelly has incredible hands. I believe he is noted for only having one dropped pass last year. We didn't need a speedster, we needed a guy with size that can catch. Kelly is that guy. I truly believe many teams will share some level of regret for passing on Kelly.

I am absolutely thrilled to have Kelly on this team. He is exactly the type of receiver we needed. Kelly and Thomas will be an excellent compliment for what we already have. I'm a Sooners fan and have watched Kelly for several years. I know Kelly has yet to play a down at the NFL level, but I honestly believe he is going to be money for us, especially in the red zone and for extending drives with 1st down catches.

Props to the front office for getting this guy signed so he won't miss any camp. I'm real anxious to see what Zorn has planned for him.

I know you weren't personally passing judgment or criticizing him. I was addressing the rotoworld piece, which is just regurgitated news, which is all rotoworld is good for anyway. Kelly was coming off a quad injury, of course his forty time would be slower. But that poor time is not indicative of his speed when healthy, and I can't understand why some in the media can't grasp that. And his health? Geez... the guy missed less than two games in his entire college career. Again, Kelly is a pure west coast "possession" receiver, not a track star. His value is in his size, strength, hands, quickness and his ability to shield out defenders.

Much like the Cardinals star receiver, Malcolm Kelly is not the fastest receiver on the field but he understands how to use his hands and body and is surprisingly quick. The junior from Oklahoma does not have outstanding statistics but his yards/catch shows that he is adept at getting the most out of his touches much like Fitzgerald. He makes up for his lack of top end speed with great quickness and a savviness that is apparent every time he touches the ball. He understands how to use his size to create separation and can stun defenders long enough to get a step ahead. He doesn’t break away, but he doesn’t usually get caught either. He can really leap for balls and does a great job of adjusting to it in the air and shielding the defender with his body. His greatest attribute has to be his hands. Kelly catches everything thrown to him, period, and is not afraid to go up in traffic or take a hit. He dropped only one ball in 80+ passes thrown his way. One of the smartest, most mentally prepared receivers available and will win over coaches with his work ethic and toughness. He appears to be a complete receiver who just lacks elite speed, but plays very big, is more technically sound and more sudden than many other prospect.

Pretty cool to see all of these guys signing well before training camp. Hopefully they get Thomas and Davis done this week. That would be sweet...

I agree, I think he is going to be a real asset. If Thomas (if he ever signs) can prove to be as explosive as moss and at his size, and perhaps catch the ball, there could be a real receiver overhaul.
