Spammers

Hi All,

We have had an increase in spammers in recent weeks. The moderators do their dangdest to get them out of site as soon as we find them, in order to keep the board as spam free as possible.

I am asking you for your help with this. Most of the time, there is at least one mod on. If there isn't and you should come across a piece of spam with inappropriate material, please email me a link to the thread at scott.hurrey (at) thehogs (dot) net.

Thanks in advance for your assistance in keeping our board PG.

Couldn't you just post their IP addresses for me? I'd be more than happy to perform denial of service attacks as a community service.

Really likely that spammers are sitting on static IPs for you to shut down...

I'm sure you guys have already considered it, but if its a real problem you might have to incorporate one of those annoying verification graphics. Type the word you see here.

I just wanted to say nice job though to the website and the mods. I post here pretty regularly and I've never seen a spam message at all. You guys must be doing something right!

We've tried all sorts of things, but for the most part, they all end up hurting real users that are trying to register.

Once we identify a spammer, we can block them fairly easily. Its mostly catching them before a young set of eyes can see them that I'm really concerned with. Luckily, I've been working all night a lot lately, so I've caught most of them before anyone else can see them, but there have been some bad ones lately. The ones I haven't gotten, there has been another mod right there to snag it, so we've done well so far.

Help me understand....what is considered a spam?

I have put up links to funny videos, am I in violation? Is that considered a spam? Because I don't even know if I'm a spammer.

A spammer is someone who registers for the site and then solicits our membership. Generally speaking, these are for porn or medication or something like that. A member posting a link is OK (with a few minor exceptions. If you're note sure, just ask someone). These guys post an 800 word post with pictures of pornographic acts and links to porn, which half the time actually link to a virus of some sort.

Typically, if it's spam, you'll look at it and say, "holy crap!"

The only other SPAM I know comes in a tin can..... :lol:

You guys do a great job getting rid of the spam. It has to be a real pain based the work it takes to clean ou t my inbox.
