Sign & trade possibility?

Post by fredp45 »

How about...

Sign Alexander as our backup to Portis so we can trade Betts and Randal El for DL or LB help. Randal El's bonus may not allow us trade him now but Betts got a very cap friendly bonus and salary.

Maybe -- Jason Taylor?

Maybe -- Keith Brooking -- I can't imagine Atlanta wants a 33 year old lb on that team.

What makes you think Alexander will be an upgrade over Betts?

I never said Alexander is better than Betts. I just want to upgrade our Defense without giving up too much. Giving up our backup rb won't kill us if we pick up someone that can carry a little of the load to rest Portis, and Alexander can do that. I'm afraid that Rock wouldn't do it when we really need it. Plus, Zorn would know about Alexander. I like Betts but if we can secure a solid defender, that would improve our team. I know it's risky to trade away Betts when Portis can go down at any time but you have to think positive and assume he'll last and try to improve your team in all areas.

Is everyone happy with our defense as is? We didn't add much to that side of the ball and all we got is one year older. I know the two guys I mentioned are also older but we need help.

BTW -- I've had one beer today and it was after I posted this...

who is -- Por-tiz2Skins? I assume that suppose to be a slam but since I have no idea who that is, or why that's funny, it doesn't work.

Nope, been a poster for over 3 years and have never used the id?

Tell me -- do you feel good about our defense as is? If so, great...I respectfully disagree. with you.

If you don't feel good about our defense as is, I agree with you and I'd like to find a way to improve it. You got any ideas?

There's a reason noone's picked up Alexander yet... That would be a downgrade for our back up and bad all around.
...any given Sunday....

Alexander needs to go into a situation where he has a chance to start, like in Houston. He may even opt to go with a team he has a chance to get a ring like New England, Indy, or the Giants. Jacksonville would be a good fit I think because he would be the thunder to Maurice Jones-Drew's lightning. I don't see him wearing burgundy and gold.

And yes, I think we need to upgrade our D. I doubt we'll make big strides there this year though. Maybe next.

If you don't P2S consider yourself lucky....GSPODS is always TRYING to be funny, it rarely works... but every now and then he's good for one.

fredp45 wrote:Nope, been a poster for over 3 years and have never used the id?

That would have been against board rules... I don't see you pulling that can't say that about everyone though

Not sure how to feel about the D, seems like we did the same thing last offseason and the D-line played better than most expected. Don't no how that actually worked out but I took it, and figured they address the line in the draft. They didn't so we'll see.

fredp45 wrote:If you don't feel good about our defense as is, I agree with you and I'd like to find a way to improve it. You got any ideas?

Like I said not sure how to feel in May, but I hope they are always looking to improve.

The Tuna is asking for too much for Jason Taylor and he'll be cut sooner or later.

Not sure why we would want to trade for Keith Brooking, Rocky should be back on schedule and guys like Blades and Sinclair are already on the roster with more upside than a 30+ Brooking.

Yeah good point about Zorn and Stump. You might be right about that, PulpExposure.

I was just reading about Alexander on ESPN. I'm not a big fan, but its incredible to me that nobody has picked him up yet.

How ironic -- I post a thread about trying to improve our defense, virtually nobody on this board bites on the idea and what do the skins do the next freaking day??? Trade for a DE. Maybe I'm not the only one around who has some worries about our defense -- looks like the team does too.

James was a very good player in college but I'm worried that his injuries may never allow him to play at a high level. Guess we can give him time to heal and see how he does. Assuming that the conditional pick is 5, 6 or 7, great, this is really worth the try.

Good job Vinne -- boy, that's hard to type!

If you honestly believe that you are the lone person on this board who has fretted about the defense, you don't come here much.

Very good point. If his quarterback coach and running back coach don't want him, that is kind of a bad sign. On the flip side, we have Portis and Betts so there is no need for an aged running back.

oops, forgot to respond to why I think we haven't picked up Alexander if Zorn and Mitchell know him and think he has something left in the tank -- until we open up a RB spot (#1 or #2) we don't get him. We don't need 3 guys and you don't want your #3 RB not on Special Teams. That's why I trade away Betts to open up a spot for him. This doesn't mean that I think Alexander is better than Betts -- I just think we could get something for Betts (his young age and reasonable salary) and the drop in quality from Betts to Alexander isn't that great.

Alexander may want a #1 RB job, but I doubt he finds too many takers.

Fios --

I wasn't implying that I was the only one who knew our defense might need some help, I was implying that I was proposing a way to improve our defense and all the responses coming back were "NO...don't do that." Alexander sucks, Betts is too good, you've been drinking, blah, blah, blah... I didn't see any come backs on what we might do to make our defense better. Almost like folks were okay sitting pat and taking a chance. I don't like those chances.

To get someone that can really help the team you need to give up something good. I believe too many people, especially posters on boards like this, grow attached to certain players and put way more value in them than they have outside the Beltway. I like Betts a lot as a player. In fact, I'd be okay if we decided to make him our #1 and traded Portis, ONLY if we could get equal value for him. Again, Alexander would be our #2 back. Get a star defensive lineman in return for Portis and I wouldn't be upset at all. I don't believe your 2nd RB is why a team makes the playoffs. Stopping the run and getting to the QB is what the NFL is all about - see the NY Giants.

I'd also say, we have other needs on our team to have that kind of quality at RB, which I don't believe is that important of a position anyway.
I think Alexander would be a good/not great backup for Portis or Betts.
If folks don't like Alexander, replace him with some other 30 year old back that can help us get through this next year. There has to be some RB out there that could do what Kevin Faulk does for NE. Hey, maybe the Cards will dump Edge James (we could have all NFL players with the last name James), maybe we could get Emmitt Smith to come back for a year, hey, Riggins might come back for the right amount of money.

You're just talking crazy. Hey, I'm with you that we need some help on D. I would love to have someone like Kearney. But to trade Portis, we would have to get a back as good or better to be successful. I would not sacrifice our offence sucking, to upgrade our D.

Sure, if we could Trade Portis, and get Edge, and get a star DE. But come on, How can you trade one star, for two stars. That won't work, no team is that dumb. Besides there are little things you are not even considering, like these guys are under contract, and the cap space. Why trade one high profile/ high pay guy for another like Edge? That serves no purpose.

You seem to be getting pist/upset because no one agrees, but your idea is just not realistic. Bring me an Idea that is, and we can have a better discussion.
