Jason Taylor on the Block

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Jason Taylor on the Block

Post by skinsfano28 »

They are looking for another first rounder "in order to secure a player they're concerned won't be on the board when they lead off the second round with the No. 32 pick overall"

Later on in the article, it states that Taylor has quietly requested a trade. Bill Parcells, ever the diplomat, has repeatedly stated that the only way Jason Taylor will not play for the Dolphins next season is if he retires.

aaaaaaandddd...DISCUSS!
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

Hail to the Redskins!

ESPN sucks on all faces.

There is no way in hell anyone should give up a first-round draft pick for a 33 year old defensive end who states he will retire before playing for another NFL franchise.

While he has been very productive (117 career sacks) & has not missed a start in the past 8 years, a 1st rnd pick is still to much for a player who will turn 34 at the beginning of the season.

I completely agree Fios. As a matter of interest only, I would ask - IF we could get Taylor for a #3 pick in the draft, would you consider this a "good decision" on this FO's part? The reasoning lately has been to look at the contribution from that pick and decide that there is no one available that could give the team the quality of play that Taylor could - albeit for just a very short term

There are some here that seem to want us to pick up a receiver at the expense of (at least  ) our #1 pick - my question is not that there are no receivers worth that to our team BUT - WHY do we want to go back to trying to build this team the way we used to and throw away top picks for 1 player when we are in need of a few good players AND we need to get younger, quality, team players to be a part of our team for many years.

I am one who believes in using draft picks AND free agents and any means needed to get a good team on the field. I am grateful that we have an owner that will financially do anything to support both the team AND BTW add to his bank account BUT I have seen what the aggressive side of free agency has led to here and I am so looking forward to having 9 picks in the draft.

Everyone has been telling us since the end of last year that Vinny Cerrato is one of the best IF not THE BEST at locating players that can become great football players for this team  Let's let him do that with 9 picks! Now I'll grant that some may fail BUT if we do not end up with at least 6 out of 9 really good players in about 2 - 3 years time and certainly making the team this fall - then we can fire Cerrato for not doing his job. BUT we need to give him all the picks possible to dig his grave - I do not want to get any free agents at the expense of giving Cerrato an out

PLUS - I am really disapointed that so many fans think that 1 big, fast receiver (with a big S on his uniform) is going to make this team better.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

A good possession WR will make us a better team. So will a pass rushing lineman. Depth at OG & S will also contribute. We need all this (& more) to be a serious superbowl contender.

I understand that a good possession WR will make us a better team and that we need to be better at a number of positions to be a playoff contender each year  We have seen the example of "upgrading" by using draft picks and by making good and bad trades and making good and bad free agent acquisitions and here we are in 2008.

We made it to the playoffs
We finished the regular season by soundly beating the giants and while many would say the pukes were not trying that team wanted to beat us and could not
We have been very inactive (or seemed to) by comparison to other off seasons.
We have a new head coach and will be using a new offensive system

We are almost a consistently competitive team but not quite in my opinion and 1 or 2 or even 3 great players is not going to help IF they cannot contribute many years of good play.

We have 9 picks in this year's draft and we need to use all of them and all of next year's draft (hopefully we can get rid of some players and get even more picks) - we need to be deeper and younger - the coaches need to get them playing together not playing to help some superstar get some great stats. This is not a fantasy football team.

Why did we not try to do something earlier? We have had at least 3 months to do something! All of a sudden we are considering losing not only our top pick but MORE for 1 player.

Let me cite a different example - why would a team consider a 4th round draft pick at all significant in a draft that has nobody very excited about the talent available? The pukes gave up 2 players that were on their team to enable them to get back a single 4th round pick in this year's draft to replace the pick they had to give up for the rights to a player that most likely will not play for them this year. :?

We have tried to add players that we all agreed were far better than who we could draft - this sometimes works but it is not a good long term plan - we are not far away from being a very good team but adding a few good players is not worth the long term deal of having an aging squad as we are and very few players from our past 8 drafts to replace them

We need to begin the process this year of using all our draft picks. Cerrato and his bunch are apparently going to give us players that will make the team - if not then both the players AND Cerrato will be gone. That will be a bonus IMO.

We can continue to add free agents and make trades and everything we need to make our team better but NOT by giving away any draft picks and especially not picks that can be used on the first day of any draft - we need as many of those as we can get.

I want our team to be better in 2 or 3 years and continue to be dominating - I am tired of watching and hoping that things will get better if we just add a really good player or 2 - we need to think a lot further ahead than this mind set of instant gratification that seems to pervade our whole thinking here.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

Citing league sources, the Washington Post reports that the Dolphins offered Jason Taylor to the Redskins.

However, the Redskins reportedly turned Miami down. The Dolphins may have asked for the No. 21 overall pick, which Washington is interested in moving, but 'Skins officials don't feel Taylor would fit in with their long-term plans. The Post does not expect the Redskins' stance to change. Apr. 25 - 4:45 pm et

Doesn't sound good. . .

Taylor-made split? Dolphin won't attend workouts or training camp

DAVIE, Fla. -- For those Miami Dolphins who did not watch Jason Taylor perform on "Dancing With The Stars" this offseason, they missed out.

And it's got nothing to do with Taylor's runner-up finish to Kristi Yamaguchi in the popular program's season finale Tuesday night.

It appears the defensive end version of Jason Taylor will be dancing solo for a while now that he and the Dolphins have split.

The Dolphins will not see Miami's star defensive end at any offseason workouts, including training camp when it opens in July, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said at a news conference Wednesday.

Following a voluntary team practice Wednesday -- with only Taylor missing -- Sparano seemed to signal the Dolphins plan to move on without their top defender.

Sparano said he would not discuss Taylor's boycott at length, adding he would not comment further until he has more information.

"This is my reaction with the Jason Taylor situation, and I'm going to answer this question one time. I'm not going to answer another question about the Jason Taylor situation after I answer this," Sparano began.

"Here's what I know: What I know is that Jason Taylor -- and I'm glad we've gotten the information; that's important -- I know that Jason is not going to be at any OTAs (organized-team activities). I know that Jason is not going to be at any minicamps, and I know that right now, that Jason is not going to be at training camp.

"That being said, we need to discuss the current players on our team right now that have been busting their butt for nine weeks here."

It was unclear what Sparano meant by "information," and unclear whether Taylor initiated the latest escalation in the feud.

The frosty relationship between Taylor and Bill Parcells, who after last season took over as Miami's executive vice president of football operations, has fueled talk that the Dolphins would seek a trade for the six-time Pro Bowl player.

In a recent interview, Taylor said he was unhappy he had talked "probably less than a minute each" with Parcells and new general manager Jeff Ireland, which he perceived as silent treatment. But the 33-year-old Taylor said he still planned to play this season.

"I want to win period, and I would love to win in Miami," he said Saturday from Los Angeles. "There are a lot of things out here going on, and a lot of opportunities coming up, but the plan is to play. Football is still my priority. I still have a passion to play football."

Taylor wrote in his ESPN The Magazine blog earlier this week that he was headed to New York after Tuesday's "Dancing" finale and then to Los Angeles for additional show publicity, and thus would be skipping a voluntary minicamp that begins Friday.

"I know what the reaction's going to be: Oh, he's the leader of that team, and he needs to be there," Taylor wrote. "But, see, there're different types of leadership in sports. There're guys that can talk all the time, and try to lead by saying: 'Oh, this is what we need to do, let's go, rah, rah rah.' They're rah-rah guys.

"And then they're guys, like me, who lead by example. And people are saying now, 'Your example should be being there working out with the team.' Well, at the end of the day, I will show up and I will do anything I need to do, and I will be the best football player I can be."

Taylor acknowledged that this is a different era in Miami, with Parcells coming on to run the show and Sparano taking over as head coach. Paul Pasqualoni is the new defensive coordinator.

"Yes, there's a new defense to learn," Taylor wrote. "But we've had a lot of coaches the last five years, and I've learned all those defenses. We'll make it work, trust me. We're not reinventing the wheel here."

My guess is that Miami will shift to a 3-4 (drafting Merling & Langford seem to point to that) & Taylor is a better fit in a 4-3. Just a wild guess on my part.

I admit I'm puzzled by the Dolphins line of thinking regarding Taylor's situation. If they were still intending to trade him, why make such remarks about him not participating in any of the offseason activities. If any team was actually considering trading something for him, now they'll just sit back and wait for Taylor to be released and won't have to give up anything. Taylor is also very well liked here in South Florida and I know many fans aren't real pleased with Parcells' and Sparano's approach to this whole ordeal.

I'm old school as well and don't care for the dancing crap, but geez... Taylor is a hell of a player with a proven track record. Why cut a guy like that, regardless of his twinkle-toes?

I would for us to pick him up? He will be pretty expensive. Even though he could help groom our D line. We havent overpaid someone in a long time. We are due. The Danny is due for a big free agent pick up.

I'd give a third round pick for Taylor, so long as the contract was no longer than two years. Since the CBA is being re-worked for the 2011 season, there would be no long-term impact of Taylor's contract on future cap or dead cap space with a two-year contract.

Taylor is two years younger than Phillip Daniels and it goes without saying that he produces, even on bad teams.

Daniels and Taylor would accually be a good combo. Daniels is a good run stopper and has good gap control. Taylor is a good pass rusher and run stopper.

I seen him last year run down a couple of guys, so Taylor still has good speed for his age and size. I would not have a problem with us getting him. I think, I would offer a 1yr deal, like the Pats did with their WRs last year. 1yr with first option to re-sign next year. Taylor stays in good shape, and can play for another 3 years or more.

It all would depend on how much he would cost, but I would really like to see some kind of upgrade before the season starts to help our D.

The only drawback to signing Taylor short-term is that $7.5 Million salary.

Yes, but If we have the cap space, aaaand don't plan to use it on anyone else, who cares. That would just be wasted cap space, why not use it on a guy for one year?

The Dolphins still won't trade Jason Taylor unless they're offered a first-round pick, according to the Florida Times Union.

No one is going to give up a first-rounder for Taylor, so this is likely just Bill Parcells playing hardball. The Dolphins' stance is reportedly that Taylor can retire if he doesn't want to play for Miami. Still, it's only May and no team needs Taylor until mid-to-late August. If Parcells is trying to prove a point about who's the boss, it's possible that Taylor is stuck. May. 26 - 1:19 am et

Are there any other (worthy) FAs out there still?

I still say we should sign someone. Like I said before, we have the cap space that we aren't useing. And we need DL help still. They free up enough money to sign CJ so I know the money's there.

I know many here are against FA signings as we have done in the past, however, the money is there, the draft is over, and we still need some upgrades.
