Daniels powerlifting

Post by BnGhog »

There was a thread on this a while back, but I couldn't find it in a search.

Daniels missed off season workouts to compete. Well, he won the powerlift.

March 2008:

It has been a successful last few weeks for the Maroscher Powerlifting Team! The following members of the MPT won APF/AAPF IL State Powerlifting/Bench Titles:

Al Baher APF IL State Powerlifting Champion - 242LB Class-Master I (1st) Open (2nd)
Amy Morrow-Baehr AAPF IL State Powerlifting Champion - 198+LBClass-Master I (1st)
Phillip Daniels AAPF/APF IL State Powerlifting Champion - 308LB Class-SubMaster (1st) Open (1st)
Dennis Duffy - AAPF IL State Bench Press Champion - 242LB Class-SubMaster (1st) Open (1st)

Also, if you go to Team Meambers on the left are pics of Daniels lifting.

And this is a link with a video of him lifting.

Anyway, I rememberd the thread, and was wondering what the results were.
I firmly believe the Patriots are the antichrist.

Impressive. I'm just wondering how much bulk he added & how it will effect his quickness.

He placed first and clearly could have added more weight to the bar if he wanted. Pretty impressive.

Stupid question, but do the Redskins sanction this sort of off-season activity? Wouldn't it be covered under the same clause the Browns used to punish Kellen Winslow for riding a motorcycle?

Yes, I know weight training is an integral part of playing in the NFL, but it's done under the team's direct supervision. Who spots for Daniels when he's training on his own for power-lifting events to make sure he doesn't rupture a disk or tear a muscle?

More importantly, all weight training isn't the same. Does power lifting require building up a different set of muscles than a defensive end needs to be successful?

To me, this activity is a little like playing off-season basketball -- something most teams forbid -- and saying it helps with your footwork and endurance. That may be true, but it's also dangerous.

As I read it, he was authorized by the 'skins to do it.

I know one thing. It looked like that 600lb deadlift and that 633lb squat were rep lifts for Daniels. He made both look way too easy, considering each lift was twice his weight.

Remember that this is the type of training that Daniels was doing when he was at his peak inthe NFL. He didn't get a chance under most of Gibbs reign because Gibbs wouldn't allow it. Personally, the idea of a D-Lineman also being a champion powerlifter seems like a good idea to me.

People keep getting down on Daniels because of his age. While I agree that we need an injection of talented youth on the line, I'm not at all concerned about Daniels. Some people just aren't as effected by age as others. Daniels seems to be one of those guys like Ray Brown or Junior Seau who plays younger than he is. Daniels at 35 is like most guys at 28. He will anchor the strong side of the line for a few more years, and I'm OK with that......I have to be.

Daniels was nicked up all last year. He won't get more durable with age, but the contrary.

Well, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't as capable these years due to Gibb's interfereing with his offseason routine and not his age. We will know for sure after this season. If his product picks up and he stays healthy then I'm on to something. If not then I'm an idiot.

Either way, it isn't as though we can go to DE Mart and pick up a 23 year old DE stud to replace him. So, we might as well let him do what he thinks will work best for him in the offseason. This is Philip Daniels, not Kellen Winslow Jr.

A person has more control lifting weights than they do flying around on a football field. Hence, as long as he is keeping proper technique, he should be fine. Its not like he is going to learn an new nuances that he wouldn't have learned playing DE for so many years anyway. Hopefully, his weight training will carry over onto the football field.
