Cerrato on Davis (Doughty Update After Jump)

Jason Reid on the Fred Davis Incident:
Some draft evaluators reported that USC tight end Fred Davis exhibited poor work habits and made questionable decisions at times. But the Redskins considered Davis to be too talented to leave on the board as they prepared to make the 48th overall pick in last weekend's NFL draft.
Questions arose anew about Davis's decision making after he missed the final practice of minicamp on Sunday. The Redskins said Davis simply overslept. Attempts to contact Davis were unsuccessful, but Davis's brother, Kedran, also said that Davis overslept after a late night out on Saturday.
Davis spoke with Coach Jim Zorn on Sunday and apologized for behaving unprofessionally, and the Redskins said the matter would be handled internally. After the Redskins completed their first OTA on Monday at Redskins Park, Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, said that Davis got the message.
"The biggest thing is, as long as they learn from their mistakes, that's the biggest thing," Cerrato said. "The kid felt awful. Jim got a chance to talk to him and Jim's handling it internally. I've talked to his agents and the kid feels horrible, which he should.
"Anytime you miss anything, to me it's important. Especially when you're here to ... he's making his first impression. Do what's right. He made a mistake. Now, he's got to fight back from the mistake."
Although it is only minicamp, Davis impressed when he did participate. He displayed the receiving skills that helped him win the Mackey Award, which is presented to the nation's top tight end, as a senior at USC, making several nifty catches in 7-on-7 passing work.
Cerrato was aware of the talk surrounding Davis before the draft. But USC Coach Pete Carroll, who worked with Cerrato in the San Francisco 49ers' organization, persuaded Cerrato that Davis was the type of player who could help the Redskins.
"We checked him out thoroughly and we were fine with everything," Cerrato said. "I talked to Pete a couple of times. There was never any big issue. I know he missed something and [he was suspended for the 2005 Orange Bowl as a freshman]. I think, a lot of times, you go away from home, you get homesick. He's from Ohio and he went to California.
"Young guy like that in college ... you mature. When he got comfortable with his environment, he matured. He was a freshman. I was homesick when I was a freshman, too. I think it's just a maturation process, a learning process, and he has to learn from his mistakes."

He couldn't sleep Saturday night because his roommate wouldn't shut up. So he went to the desk of the hotel and asked for a different room. He slept until 11 a.m., and the team couldn't find him because he wasn't in the right room.

No mention of who the roommate was

Must have been Fred Smoot. He never shuts up.
Either that or DeShawn Stevenson. He should have shut up.

i knowthis isnt a good example beause it wasnt a big infraction at all, but after watching zorn interviews, I can see Zorn being a pretty big softy when it comes to player discipline, I hope no one really challenges him this year or in the future. I have a feelng hat a big enough personality wil walk all over the guy.

One interview on redskins.com? No, next time you jump to conclusions make sure you read the post first. i have never seen an interview on redskins.com but do watch his interviews on tv and have seen more than five. While i dont "know" that he is this way i do think he is a pushover. Not saying he wont be a good coach just saying he might be a little too good cop than bad.

How can you say he may be one way or the other is what I'm asking?
A kid changes rooms and oversleeps, the coach dealt with it and now you think he might be a pushover. Where does that come from?

I was being sarcastic. Davis went back to school, like every other rookie.

Redskins | Davis misses practice because of room change

Updating a previous report, John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports Washington Redskins TE Fred Davis missed the morning session practice Sunday, May 4, because he overslept. However, Davis did not receive a wake-up call from the team because he switched rooms earlier that night and the team did not know what room he was in.

Yeah, big deal. By the way, I see the Post has conveniently left the room change part of this story out of their reporting. Nice job, Post.

Zorn is not a pushover, by any means. He's a realist. He knows the embarrassment and ribbing Davis will suffer is more than sufficient punishment for this minor mistake. I agree with how Zorn has handled the situation. I know the Post and other sources are scouring far and wide for any nugget to rip the organization over, but this ain't one of them.

That was speculation from his brother who said, "Knowing him, he was probably...," soon after saying he had talked to his roommate but not his brother since the incident.

That's why I hate when writer's put conjecture and speculation in their "reports." It becomes fact, whether true or not.

ah, I don't know.... For a guy who's "questionable" coming out of college, he shouldn't let this happen. I hope this is just a hick up.
