Macklin & Caldwell visit Rams

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Free agents from Washington visit Rams
By Jim Thomas
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Looking for depth at wide receiver and cornerback, the Rams were scheduled to meet Thursday with two free agents from the Washington Redskins — Reche Caldwell and David Macklin.

Caldwell, 28, was a second-round draft pick by San Diego in 2002 out of Florida. His best season came in 2006 when he lead New England in receptions (61), reception yards (760) and scored four touchdowns.

But after an offseason in which the Patriots added Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Donte’ Stallworth to their receiver corps, Caldwell was released last Sept. 3. He subsequently signed with the Redskins, appearing in eight games and catching 15 passes for 141 yards.

Macklin, 29, entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick by Indianapolis in 2000 out of Penn State. In four seasons with the Colts and three with Arizona, Macklin started 75 games at cornerback. He was a full-time starter for two years in Indy and two years with the Big Red.

He signed with Washington last season and appeared in only six games, with no starts. Macklin has 14 career interceptions. One of his best stretches of play came in the 2003 playoffs with Indianapolis, when he had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in three postseason games.

I'm not much of a Caldwell fan, but our depth chart at receiver is scary thin right now. If Caldwell doesn't re-sign we're looking at going into the season with Moss, ARE, and Thrash as the only receivers on our roster with any meaningful NFL experience (and Thrash is a #5 receiver at this point in his career). Even if we use our first rounder on a receiver, we're looking a depth chart of Moss/Rookie/ARE/Thrash/Mix. Considering the importance of the wide receiver position in the WCO that isn't very encouraging. If Moss were to get injured next season we'd be in huge trouble offensively.

If nobody gets injured, the Skins are still in trouble offensively with the current wide receiving corps. The Redskins need two receivers. Every consistently good NFL team has two potential #1 receivers. Harrison and Wayne. Houshmandzadeh and Johnson. Welker and Moss. And those receiving pairs average 180 receptions a season. The Skins wide receivers are nowhere close. The top three Redskins receivers had less than 180 receptions last season. If the Skins draft Touchdown Jesus they will still be thin at the wide receiver position.

Macklin is no great loss. He couldn't even crack the starting lineup with everything that happened with the Redskins secondary last season. I wouldn't mind Caldwell back if the Redskins have no intention of pursuing any other free agents.

Don't we still have to go thru the June 1st cuts? How significant is this on the FA picture?
...any given Sunday....

RIP #21 Sean Taylor. You will be loved and adored by Redskins fans forever!!!!!
