I WANT SEAN TAYLOR (Winslow won't make me frown either)

Post by The Skins Fan »

I've just been frying my brain since the combine and the Draft getting closer and closer and I've made my ultimate conclusion that the Skins should draft Sean Taylor. This guy is a beast. He's big, he's strong, he can run, he can cover and above all and my most favorite--HE CAN HIT!! Every article and everything written on this guy can't praise him enough. No disrespect to Iffy Ohalete but Taylor would be a definate upgrade. I've tried to dig up some kind of nasty dirt on this guy and there just isn't any. People are comparing him to the likes of Ronnie Lott (see Washington Post article) and many say he's better than Roy Williams of the 'Pukes. Don't get me wrong, Winslow would be an excellent pick and I would not frown on that in any way, shape or form and from all the info I've dug up on him, he's a perfect fit for Gibbs' offense in the H-Back slot but if both Winslow and Taylor are available when the Skins are on the clock, could we really pass on Taylor and grab Winslow?? Why do you think the Patriots want him so bad?? Many scouts and coaches have said over and over again that whoever picks Taylor, their defense is automatically and considerably upgraded and I'm a guy that is a very firm believer in "Offense wins games, Defense wins Championships" and Taylor would solidify the Safety spot that has been a quiet problem (muted out by the Defensive Line talks). Not taking anything away from Winslow who'll fit Gibbs' offensive scheme perfectly and be very, very productive but Tight End is not as needed as Safety especially when you have Walter Rasby, just signed Brian Koslowski and Robert Royal who's had injury problems but didn't suit Spurrier's system from the get-go (of course nobody did). And that doesn't include Leonard Stephens who's in Europe playing ball. You can mark my words right now that Royal is going to make his name known this season. I remember him at LSU catching passes all over the place, blocking guys from the Line of Scrimmage down the field 20 yards and he could be just as perfect fit at H-Back that Winslow is and I'm positive Gibbs ain't overlookin' Royal. Gibbs has a sleeping giant of a weapon in Royal that's ready to be locked and loaded. Not to mention grabbing Taylor would give us even more depth in the secondary. Think about it folks, offenses aren't going to be able to run the ball very well on a Greg Williams defense (see Tennessee and Buffalo defensive statistics eith Williams as coach) and bringing in Taylor would make that aspect even better so that means offenses are going to have to take it to the air in which Taylor is much better coverage than Iffy and Taylor is just a flat out Ballhawk that wants to be in on every hit on every tackle. Can the Redskins pass on Taylor if he's still available?? NO!!!
Hail to the Redskins...Hail Victory!!!

yep - and they should... IMO

I understand the desire for Taylor, but if someone offers us the right pick package, expect the #5 pick to go to someone else. Gibbs knows he has more holes to fill than the safety OR tight end, and it is cheaper when you trade down and you get more players who can contribute on a very good level if not the highest.

This years draft is supposed to be very deep and that is reflected in Ben Troupe and Ben Watson at TE. Have you seen film on those two? They are bigger, can motor, can block well and can catch almost - within 5% of Winslow. Do they have the same speed - probably not. The idea that we need a pocket rocket as a TE in a Gibbs scheme seems less likely.

Taylor may be a great safety, but once again, he is one man that can only affect one player on the field at a time. Watch film on Wilfork and Smith and watch them swallow QBs and RBs whole... in fact, watch tape on Vilma and the other Miami LB projected to go first round and watch how many times they got free due to Wilfork getting TRIPLE TEAMED. That, my friends, is a monster. Imagine, my Hogbrethren, Wilfork and Griffin both being doubled in the middle - leaves an end single covered and an end on a TE. Plus there isn't much help if LA or MW go shooting a gap as Gregg Williams is known to plan.

The secondary will do better if we have a better DL, simply because the QB will be on his butt or running around trying to escape.

The opponents won't run as much on this line, because most of these player acquisitions are well known run stuffers with some ability to get to the QB.

I respectfully disagree with you on this and pray that I am following Gibbs' logic in my own thinking.

If the card goes up in a hurry, expect Taylor/Winslow. If it doesn't - expect trades being negotiated.

The rumor about NE giving up both their 1st round picks for our #5 is something to think about if it's on the table

IMHO two number ones would help more than 1 number 1

actually - if we say trade back to #10 and get 2 picks additionally later in the draft - which is possible - we could end up with almost a full contingent of picks and two of the later rounds being #10 picks in each round.

to which your wife/SO will hit you in the head with a high heel and you will miss out on the draft entirely, waking up to find yourself having to get ready for work on Monday with a giant dimple in your forehead...

knowing the way the first 10 picks go - probably 12 noon plus 1 hour later = 1 pm :)

Seriously - depends on how things go with Eli - if he pouts offstage after getting selected by SD (if they are stupid) then it could go faster ::grin::

Also depends on trade talks involving the first several picks...

I am sticking to my set from 12 on

I'd guess that they'll be on the clock at about 1pm if the draft starts precisely at noon. Every year it seems like each team takes the longest amount of time (15 min) just so I sit there and freak out that much longer...

Well folks, I guess you could say I'm sitting on the fence. My first intuition would be to take Taylor. He is a very special player. Then I look at Winslow....Man is he good or what? Then I look at our D-line and think about Will Smith from OSU. What a beast. I think our tackles will suffice, so I don't look long there.
What it boils dodwn to is this: I don't care who we take as long as it's in one os those areas that really need the help. Taylor, Winslow, or Smith would be my opinion. I would love to have any of them playing on our beloved team. There is a drawback to Winslow though...his agents. That would be my only good reason for not taking him. We sure do NOT need a training camp holdout. For that reason, I would either take Taylor, or trade down slightly...not past 15 or so, so that we could still get Smith.
I trust Gibbs though and feel that he will make thte right decision and we all will just have to accept it and be happy with it.
You'll always be remembered Sean. R.I.P.
