A league source tells us that the Redskins have reached an agreement to retain the services of quarterback Todd Collins.

Collins, 36, helped lead the ‘Skins to the playoffs after starter Jason Campbell went down with a knee injury.

The Rams were believed to be interested in Collins, given that former Redskins’ assistant Al Saunders, who brought Collins to D.C., is now the offensive coordinator in St. Louis.

Collins will presumably stay in the No. 2 spot behind Campbell, but Collins provides a quality insurance policy in the event of further injury to the 2005 first-rounder.

I know that this probably went through but I haven't seen it posted anywhere else. JLC, ESPN, etc. Just never heard of this site. I know that its down to DC or Jax. So we will see. I hope we didn't pay too much if it did happen.

If this is true, good for the Skins. A vet. back up who JC already has a relationship with will only help him. I hope we keep Rock and since we have Stump Mithcell (Citadel Connection), I think we keep Nemo as a back-up fullback. He just needs to stay healthy.

Collins stays in Washington
The Washington Redskins fought off the advances of Jacksonville, the New York Giants and the St. Louis Rams to keep backup quarterback Todd Collins.

Collins agreed to a three-year, $9 million deal to stay in Washington. Though the Giants and Rams made hard pushes after the 12:01 a.m. Friday morning opening of free agency, the Jaguars made the hardest push to pull Collins away from the Redskins.

The Redskins kept upping the offer to Collins and the Jaguars kept upping their offer. Collins, who studied all the backup quarterback numbers and met with head coach Jim Zorn Thursday in Quincy, Ma., found the market for him hotter than expected.

Collins not only won over his Redskins teammates by a late-season surge that led the Redskins to the playoffs, but he earned the respect of the league as a valuable backup. Redskins owner Dan Snyder did not want to lose him as a backup to Jason Campbell and stepped up in the end to make sure he stayed.

I'll take Todd Collins as our sole vet QB backup. Now we need a youngster to develop. Is Sam Hollenbach that guy? Not sure.

Yes, the only good thing that comes out of this is that Brunell's gone. I never felt he gave the Skins any shot at the SB and was a backup at best. He did give it a good effort and was surprisingly good at times, horrible at other times. He was best on the run, but past that point in his career to do it regularly and stay healthy.

Frankly, Pat Ramsey should have started during those Brunell years. I think that was the biggest personnel mistake of the 2nd Gibbs era. Ramsey gave us a better chance to get past Seattle and Carolina in 2004 and he was hungry to prove himself.

Frankly, I think it is great that the Redskins are not out bidding a zillion dollars on FA's. Look at the past, we have been burned so often that we are now the first team mentioned by an over-the-hill player or his agent when they are trying to drive up their deal, whether we are interested or not.

Collins was a good deal. So what if the amount is high, he probably will not be playing for 3 years. Keeping him is important to the team as he is a proven back-up. I would rather that the Redskins over paid one of our own than an outsider.

So far, and that is not very far, I think that Cerrato and Zorn have done just fine.

I think this is a great signing. Most will be concerned with age but Todd hasnt taken many hits in his career. His preparation for gameday is amazing. If he can pass this info along to jason and whatever project qb we bring in, 10m is a small price to pay.

In what world is $9M over three years exorbitant or somehow the result of a bidding war? We have yet to see the contract details so we have no idea how it breaks down but to have a steady hand as a back-up at the QB position is 100% worth it.

The Jaguars apparently made the "hardest push," but oh no, Dan will solve that and "step up in the end" to make sure he stayed. 3 mil a year for a guy who played well in 4 games over 10 years and is 36 years old is too much.

Although he has battled weight issues in the past, Jenkins should provide the big-bodied presence at nose tackle the team has sorely lacked since coach Eric Mangini instituted a 3-4 defensive scheme in 2006. Dewayne Robertson, who was manning the spot for New York, seems likely to get traded elsewhere. Robertson is better suited as a penetrating-style tackle in a 4-3 defensive scheme.

I bet it's less than JP Loseman, Kyler Boller, Brady Quinn, and Aaron Rodgers just to name a few!
