The Redskins recently re-worked the contracts of WR Antwaan Randle El, RG Randy Thomas, and DE Andre Carter.
The Thomas and Carter restructurings were expected. Randle El's 2008 cap number dropped from $4.1 million to $2.7 million, and he had an extra year added onto his deal. ARE caught a career high 51 passes for 728 yards (14.3 YPC) in 2007, but scored only once. He'd preferably move to the slot in 2008, although the Redskins first need to find a viable replacement outside.

A lot of us rip on Lloyd for not producing, but ARE hasn't exactly been a great addition, especially considering how much we paid for him. As a punter returner he has been mediocre and as a receiver he isn't anything more than a slot receiver.

I wouldn't quite rip on ARE for his numbers as a WR. He's done pretty well considered he's been hurt. He's always looking for YAC, which is admirable to say the least. I watched Randy Moss in the SB fall down when he was taking an inside route that I don't think I would have seen ARE fall down on. I like 'em.
Now, if we could just get him to stop tap dancing on punt returns......

How about his rainbow celebration. Pathetic...after every GD first down!

Considering first downs don't come easy, particularly for the Redskins, I'm not ready to diss the celebration of one of the hardest working players on the field.
On topic, I think it's great that these guys restructured.

Agreed
Ditto! Especially with Carter. Carter had a much better year than last and is still willing to restructure. Most guys have a good year and they start asking for more but instead he is restructuring. Thats awsome!
Hey guys, is it normal for players to restructure contracts like this? I mean, it seems like it's required for our players to restructure because of all these "cap hell" years we are having... I remember how Springs was getting flak for not restructuring last year. It just seems like we have more players doing it than other teams that's all.

I think Springs needs to be taking notes.
There is a difference. I believe (may be wrong here) that with guys like Carter and Thomas, they aren't actually losing out on any money in this. Whereas with Springs I think they actually wanted him to take a pay cut.
Don't be to quick to jump on ARE, he was a big factor in the playoff run. He is a "Good" punt returner, which is basically and "offensive play" when you get down to it. He has great hands, and takes alot of presure off the return team. Number two, he is a decent slot receiver with speed to get extra yards after catch. He earned his pay this year with all our injuries..
Now with that said we DO need a "big time" number 2 wide out to go with Moss, this would compliment them both...

No he isn't. At least he hasn't been since he got here. He dances around WAY too much instead of heading upfield. He was 22nd out of 23 players in the NFL in terms of yards per punt return last season (only 23 qualified players based on the statistical threshold). In 2006, he was 20th out of 31 qualified returners. That isn't good at all, especially for a player that got a big contract thanks largely to his combo of receiving and return skills.
Randy Thomas went from a cap figure of 8.0 million to 4.1 Andre Carter went from 4.9 to 2.8 (the team guaranteed his June 1 roster bonus of $2.4 million as part of the deal) ARE went from 4.1 to 2.7
So the Redskins saved 7.6 mil in cap space with these moves. They're top 51 (salaries) for 2008 now stands at $132 million, $16 million over the cap, "by far the most in the NFL," according to my guy.
Now, again, don't panic. They'll trim $9 million on Chris ey alone and will easily end up with room to chase other free agents.
Clearly shows these guys are dedicated to the team, by restructuring to help the team with the overall cap figure and perhaps leave some room to pick up a player or two. Well done, fellas... and thanks.

<sigh> I actually agree with this. Don't get me wrong, I like ARE a lot. His receiving skills have gotten better and he's still a sweet option for the trick play, but I can't stand all the dancing on punt returns. Hopefully someone will straighten him out or just put Marcus Mason back there.
Can't help thinking that our whole offensive line is a ticking timebomb for the salary cap. No doubt, they'll look at restructuring Jansen, Samuels and Rabach as well. They won't be getting pay cuts, and it's all just pushing the cap hit into a later year, and increasing the size of that hit too. Classic Cerrato really.
I know we've dodged the salary cap hell bullet for years now, but I have to think that this will catch up with us sometime.

I rather like that. He is having a great time out on the field and it his own original move.
Does anyone know what that means?
I thought he was putting "his name in lights" or something like that.
In an interview, he said the it was him giving praise and glory to God for all that He has done for ARE. Thus, the rainbow/semi circle action with his arms...... All glory to God for all that He has done.

Oh yea, for the money we pay that guy, I love having an, at best, # 3 receiver on the team that is poor in kick returns, and a sweet option for the trick play. Awesome. Makes a ton of sense.

Not sure what you're trying to say. Cut him? What, I don't get it.
We just restructured his contract, so I don't think we're paying him as much as you think. And it's my opinion he's been pretty solid for us on offense. I haven't been all that thrilled with his return skills.
So what's your point? What do you think they should do with him?

Well I disagree, I always felt that he was not a good runner after the catch, same with his punt returns always stopping or hopping or falling to the ground when he could just reach higher or reach lower. Maybe i'm wrong, it could have been the timing and accuracy of Jason's passes. But this guy always falling to the ground after a catch without being touched.
With that said he played decent for us last year and made some key plays.

My point is that his salary in 2007 was the 10th highest among WR's and he doesn't deserve it. What's your point?
Do you think he should be paid more than... Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt, Donald Driver, Hines Ward, Larry Fitgerald, Reggie Wayne just to name a few? Well, he is.
Oh and by the way, Brandon Lloyd was number 11.

You can't cut him at this point, but in no way should ARE we anything other than a #3 receiver. He simply isn't good enough to be a #2 NFL receiver. We need to find a #1 or #2 quality receiver this offseason, whether through the draft (Limas Sweed please) or through free agency. Assuming that Lloyd is gone, our depth chart at receiver is seriously lacking in talent. We have a borderline #1/#2 receiver in Moss, and after that it's a bunch of #3 and #4 receivers.

yea its easy to see how a team gets in such cap hell when you make someone who's career high receiving yards is 601 the tenth highest paid receiver in the league.
My point was to agree with Canes comment regarding frustration over ARE's dancing on punt returns. Problem with that? And I personally don't care how much money the guy makes, I don't sign his checks. And as I said, his contact was back loaded to begin with and they just restructured him accordingly.
