Redskins are not expected to offer Steve Mariucci their head

What Adam Schefter actually reported yesterday was that despite reports out of Washington that Mariucci was no longer a candidate (thanks JLC) Redskin officials confirmed to Adam in a phone conversation on Tuesday that Mariucci was still very much in contention for the HC job.

Let me get this off my chest! The Redskins are not the first team to give the new HC no say in his coordinators. Dallas did it with... no not Wade Phillips, but Barry Switzer. Switzer had no say in the matter, all of the asst coaches were already on staff.

Two years later he won a SB. You can talk all you want about how it was w/Jimmy Johnson's player, but the point is: If you have the talent on the field, it really doesn't matter who is on the sideline. Of course as we learned w/Gibbs the opposite is true too!

Back to my rant! So what if Snyder has coaches that are hold overs and one new hire, if he hires HC “X” and HC “X” doesn't like the coordinators is it beyond the realm of possibilities that Snyder will fire those coaches and let the new guy hire his own?

Of course who is left out there? Letting GW and Saunders go may have been a mistake, but nothing else is beyond changing. It would just cost Snyder some coin.

I feel that whoever is coming in here will be agreeing to let Snyder, Cerrato and staff provide the players and coaches for the Redskins - ANY hirings, firings, trades, etc. of players and coaches will all be handled by this "group". No HC is going to be under any illusion as to how things are "handled" here.

That's true. Not many coaches in this league get or have full control, and shouldn't. I know Mike Holgrem does, but that's rare and an aberration.

Holgrem does not have compelte control over the Seahawks anymore. He gave up that power a while ago.

I didn't know Holgrem gave up control. Thanks. He used to be pretty hardcore about that philosophy. I personally don't think any coach should have full control... except for Gibbs of course.

I'm an extremely analytical person and I always try to read between the lines, although I end up being wrong just as much as I'm right. That said...

To date, we've heard a few things from Snyder. He's made several comments publicly regarding several of the candidates, including Spags, Meeks and I think Fassel. But not one word about Mariucci, that I'm aware of anyway, and I could be wrong, but as far as I know, nothing said publicly.

If true... why? When Mariucci's name surfaced, a lot of folks around the league said he made total sense, based on the hiring of Zorn, the promotion of Blache and reports that Vinny likes him a lot. But not one word from Snyder about him. Again, I'm trying to read into this and I very well could be totally wrong, but I think that's very telling or an indication Mooch may be the leading candidate. We'll see.

At least that's what I hope...

More to my theory.

Meeks and Spags are defensive guys. With the promotion of Blache and basically staying with the same defensive system, does hiring Meeks or Spags make much sense? Even if they ran similar systems, then the promotion of Blache wouldn't make much sense. Also, fact is Zorn is inexperienced as an offensive cooridinator, as many here have mentioned, and it would seem to make more sense to have another offensive coach.

As far as Fassel is concerned, he's basically a QB coach who evolved into a coordinator and a HC. But his background is coaching QB's. Well, so is Zorn's. Would it make sense to have 2 QB coaches? Additionally, even though Fassel worked for a period of time early in his career under Bill Walsh, Fassel is not a "west coast" coach and didn't run that system in NY or Baltimore. He ran a very conservative system.

Zorn is a QB coach and will run some version of the west coast offense. What would Fassel then be doing? It doesn't appear Fassel would be coaching the QB, calling the plays, as he did with the Ravens and the Giants, and is not a west coast guy. To me, he doesn't fit. We don't need 2 QB coaches and 2 coaches with different offensive philosophies. Maybe Fassel is planning to change his philosophy, but to me, he just doesn't seem to fit with what we already have.

That leaves Mariucci, who likes Blache and would be a compliment to Zorn in the west coast system, as both are from the Holgrem coaching tree. Therefore, I would have to go with Mooch, as to me, he makes much more sense. But as far as "sense" is concerned, I know we're dealing with Danny and Vinny, so anything could happen.

And if they wanted a defensive coach, why would they just have gone with Williams, regardless if he pissed Snyder off. Our defense has been pretty good, our offense hasn't, seems we need offensive help. At this point, I'm really pulling for Mooch.

Agreed. I actually think Mooch looks pretty good in burgundy. I thought the same thing when he was wearing that burgundy tie on the NFLN the day after his interview.

Frankly I don't see this clear-cut distinction between Mariucci and Fassel that some of you do. Their career track records aren't all that dissimilar. My reaction to both, at this point, is complete indifference.
