Gregg Williams goes to Jacksonville

Post by spudstr04 »

Jacksonville radio station 1010XL is reporting that Gregg Williams has been hired by the Jaguars as defensive coordinator.

The decision isn't expected to be announced for another day, but the Jags have found a quality (though likely pricey) upgrade for MIke Smith, who is now in Atlanta. Williams was once thought to be the favorite for the head coaching job in Washington, but the Redskins decided to pursue other options. He inherits a similar 4-3 defensive scheme with better personnel, including two of the best DTs in football.

Other than their DTs and Rashean Mathis, who on their D qualifies as "better personnel?"

Thank you for caring for Sean Taylor and help molding a better man. Thanks for giving this community an identity to embrace. And thank you for standing up to Daniel Snyder and doing what was true to you. Again, good to know you and best of luck in Jacksonville.

Phew. For a minute there I thought Dallass might have landed the dude. I honestly share the above noted sentiments, GW was awesome; and I dont know what the heck happened in the head coaching interviwes.

All I know is we better take this team in a good direction, or else...

Ex-Redskins coordinator Williams agrees to same role with Jags

ESPN.com news services

Updated: February 5, 2008, 5:45 PM ET
Gregg Williams has agreed in principle to become Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator, pending a review of the contract, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Tuesday.

The move would complete a whirlwind tour for the former Washington Redskins defensive coordinator. Dallas media reported that Williams interviewed with the Cowboys on Sunday for a role on their staff.

That came after Williams interviewed numerous times for the Redskins head coaching job in the past few weeks. He went from being a front-runner for the position to being fired in a matter of days.

The Atlanta Falcons hired former Jags defensive coordinator Mike Smith as their head coach last month.

IF Williams does get the job, I would really like to see this team in the Super Bowl next February - they were already a good D, this addition will make them better. Williams and Del Rio will be a tough combination.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

He told Snyder and Vinny to pound sand, and that he wants to hire his own staff.....I'm guessing.

Guys, obviously this is just poor reporting and Williams will be named Redskins HC by the end of the week...

Also, to the poster who asked who qualified on the Jags D as better personnel:

DE Paul Spicer
DT John Henderson
DT Marcus Stroud
DE

LB Mike Peterson
LB
LB

CB Rashean Mathis
CB Brian Williams
CB Aaron Glenn

S Lamont Thompson
S Sammy Knight

Those empty spaces are spaces where Redskins players were rated higher by Scouts inc. this year.

Only three Redskins players are rated at their positions higher than Jags players and that was BEFORE THE SEASON. Now, after having a great year for the Jags I'm sure they would be rated even higher.

The Jags have better (a lot better) defensive personnel than us, and it's pretty obvious

I did not support hiring Gregg as Redskins HC, but I wish him the best if the rumor is true and he is on his way to Jacksonville. And I hope he does eventually land another opportunity as head coach somewhere.

How many of those spaces might be filled by current Redskins???

Yeah, Scouts rated the Redskins personnel based upon a season where we were 31st in total defense, and the Jags based upon a season they were ranked 2nd in total defense. No big surprise they ranked the Redskins players lower (esp. considering Fred Smoot had an awful year for the Vikings).

Now, after having a great year for the Jags I'm sure they would be rated even higher.

Skins had a better year defensively than the Jags this year (8th total defense versus 12th total defense). You'd expect the Jags ratings to decline, as their defense dropped from 2nd to 12th, and the Skins player ratings to increase by a large magnitude, since we went from 31st to 8th.

Fortunately for Williams, WHEN he gets an opportunity to be the HC, he will be in a situation where he has an opportunity to make a team successful by surrounding himself with players and coaches of his choice that he feels will give him the best opportunity to win.

I predict that Williams (as a head coach) will take a NFL team to the playoffs (hopefully soon) because he knows what it takes to be successful in the NFL.

using this formula you have to wonder how come we are looking at a guy from NY whose defensive unit gave up over 40 TDs last year and whose defensive unit rated lower than the Redskins whose defensive leader was let go  OH! that's right, the stats are misleading

PLUS - IF the guy from NY gets the job, he will first have to agree to letting Snyder (& Cerrato) select the coaches, players and even call plays whenever they want. I hear that Tom Cruise may be in on some of the play calling as well.

He had a shot already in Buffalo, and how'd THAT turn out. Yes, I'm upset he's no longer with the team, but let's not get carried away with Gregg's "prowess" as a Head Coach vs. his obvious abilities as a D-coordinator.

Blache(sp?) will be ok IMO. He knows what GW had put in place and why. He also, knows we need some young talent at DL.

The only questions I think, is will Blache be able to adapt quickly when something isn't working?

Like us haveing at least one deep safty, to stop the big plays. He will most likely keep things like that, simply because it worked. But my question is the idea of keeping the safty that deep was GW idea. When this don't work any longer will Blache be able to adjust quickly?

Or Does he have his own ideas and will take that away all together. If he comes in and starts to change things like that. It could be rough year. IMO he needs to build on what GW had left in place. He could probly bring them up closer, IF we upgrade the line so the QBs don't have that much time.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I do wish GW luck. And the Deep safties is a great example of how well he finds solutions to Problems using existing players. He is a good coach. But he can't walk in on the jags practice field and have the the results he had here this year IMO. He will need a year, to see what the players skills are. They will have to get beat some before he knows their weeknesses.
I firmly believe the Patriots are the antichrist.

If he had a halfway decent playcalling on offense here he would've gone farther, 1 out of 4 yrs was the only time his Defense did not carry this team, even this year his guys carried us. They kept us within striking distance in the Seattle game. I give mad props for the guy, he made it all work with an aging line with young backups, and 1 good pass rusher. Now until we start the season, I still think he will be back.
