Official Spagnuolo Thread/He's Staying in NY

Post by spudstr04 »

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will interview for the Redskins' head coaching job early next week, according to the New York Daily News.
This was widely expected. The Redskins will host Spagnuolo on either Monday or Tuesday of next week. If the Giants upset the Patriots, Spags could vault past several other candidates who are on Dan Snyder's short list.

Even "the Danny" wouldn't have a Defensive minded HC with a OC that has never been a OC run the offense. It'll be Fassel

If we are nominating posters to be coaches, can I throw my support behind Redeemed for the position of qb coach.

I'll second that nomination
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

On the subject of Spagnuolo, I found this snippet that I wasn't aware of:
His first NFL experience came in 1983 as an intern with the Washington Redskins under then-assistant general manager Charlie Casserly.

So, there you have it - he's been a Redskin all along. The performance of his defence against the Patriots definitely makes him well worthy of an interview, but I don't see how he'd be a good fit in Washington. It would mean a change of defensive scheme, which blows away the only remaining continuity we have.

Spagnuolo - Redskins connection

Post by hogproud »

I'm starting to warm up to this cat. Not sure how Greg Blache's presence impacts his candidacy, however, based on the Super Bowl...this guy clearly knows how to pepare a team. Here's a closer look at a couple of unique ties to the Redskins AND his extensive experience within the division.

I like seeing all his play calling experience. He also has coached every group of defensive players at one time, so he should be more than just Xs and Os, and know how each position should be played on D. You also made a good point about how he has lots of experience in the division. I'd still prefer Bill C, Grimm, or Mooch, but he's not a bad choice. Most of the other names out there scare me though.

Really? Where on his resume do you read that he has had experience preparing an entire team?

Yea, I'm thinking he did a super job against the Pats in the bowl but he didn't really have a hand in the offense; so to say he can prepare a whole team is yet to be seen. However, wasn't this his first year with the Gnats? I'm not saying he isn't a good defensive coach but he's never been a head coach before and I'd rather have someone with that kind of experience. I don't agree with "experimenting" on first timers when IMO we need someone who knows how to lead and has done so before.

Umm...ya, I didn't mean the WHOLE team. Perhaps I should've been more clear:

As the DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, he did a nice job of preparing HIS defense. I thought they played an okay game against the Patriots and did an okay job of game planning

As for "experimenting" on first timers...this is just not a very good barometer on judging potential head coaches. By that rationale, the Joe Gibbs experiment in 1981 would have never happened.

I'm not out in front carrying the Spagnuolo flag...I'm just saying he was VERY impressive in his first season as a coordinator and the Redskins would be foolish not to look at him. The interview on Tuesday is obviously warranted...if for nothing else, a fact-finding mission on one of your great rivals.

While we can congratulate the Giants on their Super Bowl win, winning it does not qualify their coaches as head coaches. If Spagnuolo is selected because his team won the Super Bowl rather than the perception of his ability to lead the Redskins, it is the wrong reason to select him.

So far on THN, posters have been "positive" that several coaches would be the final Head Coach. Let's wait and see who is finally selected.

EXACTLY. You nailed it.

On the good side, Spagnuolo isn't a retread. He's fairly young. I like that he was on the Eagles staff all those years. As much as I hate the Eagles, I have a lot of respect for Andy Reid and that crew.

And if it would hurt Antonio Pierce's feelings to see him leave, sounds good to me too. Man that guy is like some needy ex-girlfriend or something. Get over it, dude.

Does he come from that line of coaches??? I totally didn't make the connection. Maybe this is a bigger link to Blache and Zorn than I first thought. He's in that family of coaches, is he not?

The coaches under Holmgren were Mooch, Blache, Zorn, Reid, Mornhinweg, Childress, Gruden among others. The keys being Blache and Zorn. Under Reid is Spag's. Would this be a fit?

Fassel is not even close to making sense for this team. Mooch and Spag's make total sense.

Keeping in mind that Gibbs was an unproven offensive coordinator when he became the HC of the Skins in 1981, I don't necessarily agree that we need somebody else's ex-head coach.

Spagnoulo certainly shows that he is a great strategist by shutting down the Pats offense (the pass rush certainly made the job much easier, but.....). And that is what you really need to be great at as a head coach.....a great strategy for beating your opponents.

One thing is sure, there is no such thing as a sure thing, and you have to take risks. I think Spagnoulo would be a justifiable risk. He might just be the next great coach waiting for an opportunity to show it.

The only downside to hiring Spagnoulo is that Zorn has no experience as an OC either, which is where the Redskins will likely need the most help from the HC, therefore an a candidate with extensive offensive experience would be a safer bet from that standpoint.

Not sure he's qualified...guys like Osi, Strahan and Tuck would make most coasches look good...gotta respect what he did during the playoff run. I think Snyder had made the Redskins job less attractive these days. Will be interesting to see !. If he wants the job and 2. What Snyder is willing to pay??

As the game progressed the other night all I could think about was The Danny hiring this new toy. It is just sad that he cannot understand after almost a decade of how to build a winner - all he has to do is look at the two teams in the super bowl to see. ugh

My first thought is the same thought I had about Jason Garrett. He had a good year, but he's only had one year as an NFL coordinator. I think it's a big risk, ala Norv Turner.

I see what you are saying. However, do you think that it is more of a risk than hiring a coach that has been fired from his last 2 jobs (Fassel)?
