GW has interviewed with Cowboys about defensive assist job

Ex-Redskins coordinator interviews with Cowboys
By MAC ENGEL

Former Washington Redskins defensive coordinator and Buffalo Bills head coach Gregg Williams has interviewed with the Cowboys about their defensive assistant job, according to a source said.

The location and date of the interview was not known. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his staff have been in Glendale, Ariz., since Thursday for Super Bowl XLII.

The Cowboys interviewed Dom Capers for their linebackers coach and/or defensive assistant at Valley Ranch last week. The Cowboys offered the position to Capers, but he has yet to accept it.

They still could bring Capers on the staff. It’s believed he is hoping to be offered landa defensive coordinator position.

The Cowboys are also interested in former Cincinnati linebackers coach Ricky Hunley.

Williams became available when he was fired Jan. 26 after having interviewed four times for the Redskins’ head coaching position.

His potential hiring would counter Cowboys coach Wade Phillips’ preference for coaches with experience in the 3-4 scheme. Williams, who replaced Phillips as the head coach of the Bills in 2001, prefers to run the 4-3 set.

In his three seasons as the head coach of the Bills, Williams compiled a 17-31 mark.

He has long been considered a solid defensive coach. Starting in 1990, he worked his way up the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans staff to become defensive coordinator for Tennessee in 1997-2000. He joined the Redskins as coordinator in 2004.

With the Redskins, Williams was the NFL’s highest-paid assistant coach — $3 million a year — and it was thought he would replace Joe Gibbs, who retired Jan. 8, as head coach.

That didn’t happen, and now he’s a free-agent coach.

I heard that rumor before the interview with the cowboys came out. I have been unable to find confirmation he is with the jags. Do you have a link?

Heard this reported on ESPN this AM too. That would really suck if he ended up there.

Well, wouldn't that be a sickener? At least he won't have any inside knowledge of our offence this year. Unfortunately, neither will we.

This is an interview to get some dirt on the Redskins.

Here is my thinking:

Remember when there were reports that our Owner Daniel Snyder wanted to try to make Williams look bad b/c the fans wanted him to be the coach so bad. So this is it. We all forget all too soon.

i dont see this happening.. the cowboys have the personel for a 3-4 with people like Ware, Spencer, Ellis as those DE/LB and the big NT with Johnson and Ferguson. this move would set them back, it wouldnt make sense.

GW can make oranges out of apples I tell ya, this is scary to say the least. Here he had good DB's and Avg LB's and he made it all work. even after losing the best safety ever. I'm almost scared to find out what he would do with dallas D. Now I Haet Dallas, this would really suck if he does go there.
#21 (36) This IS and will always be the High watermark where all new DB's are measured.

Look at it this way, if Williams goes to the Cowboys, we already have several copies of his defensive play book.
