Redskins are not expected to offer Steve Mariucci their head

Post by por-tiz2skins »

ESPN's John Clayton reports the Redskins are not expected to offer Steve Mariucci their head coaching job.
Clayton says the Redskins spoke with Mooch late this week, but it appears that may have just been to please the fan base. Clayton fully expects Jim Fassel to be named to the position next week, although owner Dan Snyder still has to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Man what does ESPN know any more. But if its from ESPN than either way should be a lil accurate.

damn, I really liked Mooch, but Fassel will be okay. I don't understand why they just don't go ahead and hire him though.

If Snyder had the fan base in mind he would never ever consider Fassel who will bring consecutive losing seasons as he overhauls the team. If he considered the fan base he would have maintained continuity and built upon the amazing turn around last season, meaning hire GW and keep the same offense in tact. And if he considered the fan base he would have honored the memory of Sean Taylor by honoring the bond the team and fans all built in our grief and recovery.

Instead he considers his wallet and his miniature ego. He talks to mooch to pacify the mob, waiting for us all to grow weary of our anger, because he needs your money, and once we've vented and seem ready to roll over, he will announce Fassel, who for some reason strokes his miniature ego.

The Skins have become some strange parody. Being a Skins fan is more akin to watching a reality show about a disfunctional group of self centered wannabes than rooting for a proud sports franchise. And interviewing mooch to shut us all up fits the script; throw the fans a bone while the think tank plans their PR spin.

What do you expect from a guy who fired Norv during a WINNING season, hired and fired Marty in less than a year, brought in the Ball Coach who obviously never should have coached a pro-team, not even in Canada or the AFL, and just completely blew up the ground work and legacy Gibbs spent four years grinding out. Snyder is a horrid thing.

Firing Norv was one of the best decisions Snyder ever made. Snyder did not fire Marty in less than a year, and when he was fired it was because he demanded full control over all personnel decisions. Do you forget that this decision was applauded both by the fan base and the Washington press at the time? Do you forget that the decision to hire Spurrier was applauded both by the fan base and the press (with Kornheiser beating the loudest drum)?

You say that Snyder should have opted for continuity by hiring Williams and keeping the same offense in place. Did it ever cross your mind that Williams might have told Snyder that he intended to hire a different offensive coordinator and take the offense in a different direction? Have you so quickly forgotten that just about everyone expected that Saunders would leave regardless?

I think that you are too easily influenced and manipulated by the media (and the media's attempt to destroy Snyder and the franchise).

I wonder what makes Clayton say that. He didn't mention any "league sources" and we all know how secretive Snyder is. Is this just his opinion? I don't get it.

I don't buy it. I think that Mooch is getting the job if he wants it and the $'s are right.

Actually to say my POV is manipulated by media is an apologist pov. I've been a staunch defender of Snyder to the point of being rude. What I am is a mega-fan who has cheered for the Skins since 1965 and I've finally seen the light about Snyder. My only hope is that he moves on to another business venture. I've lived through four owners, no reason I won't make it to five.

All the media types who've given Snyder zero respect over the years were right and I was wrong. J-Lac, sorry for hating on you, bro, you've called a clean game!

As for firing Norv. They made the playoffs the previous year and they were in the midst of a winning season when he was canned Norv and replaced him with Robiski, who lead the team to a limp finish. Norv was micro-managed out of a job by Vinny, Dan, and their horrid player signings. Jeff George? Really? As for Marty, he should have wanted total control. He is a football man. Snyder plays fantasy league football with REAL people, and he sucks. Marty wanted what was best for the team. And did he make a full calendar year? I don't think so but you're right, I don't have the dates. I for one didn't hail Spurrier. I live in SEC country and I knew that was a disater from the go as did most people who followed him down here. And for Williams, it's widely reported he wanted to keep the previous offense intact minus a few hundred pages of playbook. Plus, the team wanted him. And he was already head coach of a top defense three of the last five years. Talk about a stupid decision.

I've called Wilbon, J-Lac, King, Dr. Z some nasty things over the years when they've hammered on the Skins and Snyder. But the proof is in the truth. And the truth is that Snyder is not good at football. He's good at getting your money for inferior product. But at building a football team and honoring tradition with honor he is one lame executive. You can't argue that with much success.

It is not an easy or even painless transition. I feel you brother. You know what? the time is near. Keep the faith in the team.

We have an irrseponsible and incompetent wanna-be "leader". Have you gone to a sports match or even a through a more perilous undertaking in those conditions. I have. It ain't pretty. But life puts everybody back where they belong. t is painful for some courageous people who must endure it but it happens. Keep the faith in the team.

By the way, I am sure that the title of the thread has some unintended humour hidden on it:

Redskins are not expected to offer Steve Mariucci their head (job?)
ROTFALMAO

I am sure Snyder would be willing to do -anything- because he "really wants to win".
ROTFALMAO
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

I agree with ya, Chad.

ESPN, Clayton's own network, reported this morning on SportsCenter that the Skins will interview Mooch again for the HC job, one day after Clayton said the Skins won't offer him the job. Clayton's just as clueless as everyone else right now.

The truly secrets candidates, in order of preference:

1. Vince Lombardi

2. George Allen

My sources say that Snyder is puzzled because they don't return his calls, but, being a great General Manager, he will persist.

Snyder narrowing Redskins' coaching search

By Ryan O'Halloran and David Elfin
February 3, 2008

PHOENIX — Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder said yesterday he hopes to have a new coach in place by the end of the week and will select from a pool of two to three candidates.

Speaking after the Pro Football Hall of Fame announcement — which included former Redskins Darrell Green and Art Monk — Snyder indicated he is waiting until after tonight's Super Bowl to continue the interview process.

The three candidates are believed to be Jim Fassel, Ron Meeks and Steve Spagnuolo. Steve Mariucci could enter the mix after his interview today.

A league source said Spagnuolo, the New York Giants' defensive coordinator, will return to New Jersey with the team Monday, but the Redskins are still waiting to contact him. New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is not under consideration.

"We would have liked this to be done two weeks ago, but I wish people would recognize our initial target list and it dragged on because of the Super Bowl," Snyder said. "We all wanted it to be faster. But this is our process and this is us being patient going through the process."

Snyder said the Redskins' assistant coaches, minus running backs coach Earnest Byner and quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor, have signed multiyear contract extensions. Those deals likely are through at least 2010.

The entire training and strength-conditioning staffs also will return.

Byner interviewed last week for a similar position with Tampa Bay and has turned down a one-year extension by the Redskins.

Lazor, who is unlikely to be retained, has interviewed with another team.

Although he fired coordinators Gregg Williams and Al Saunders, Snyder said continuity has remained his goal throughout the search.

"That's one of the things we've really focused on," he said. "It became very apparent during the process that everybody agreed we had a great coaching staff. The promotion of Greg Blache [to defensive coordinator] will go a long way because he's a really fantastic coach and a great guy."

Snyder defended the hiring of both coordinators before a head coach.

"Jim Zorn is the only coach we've added so in reality, we're not hiring as much as we're keeping," he said. "We thought [adding Zorn] would be a smart move, and we did it. Other than that, we have not turned over our coaching staff."

If Byner and Lazor don't return, the Redskins will have a minimum of four new assistants — defensive line, running backs, quarterbacks and Zorn — on staff.

Speaking from his home in North Carolina, former coach Joe Gibbs supported Snyder's move in hiring Zorn and Blache ahead of his replacement.

"If you wait until late in the process, in this case going after the Super Bowl, a lot of the key people will be signed up by different teams," Gibbs said. "Dan couldn't afford to wait or he was going to lose a lot of good coaches."

Gibbs, who has not participated in any of the interviews, defended the way Snyder is conducting the search.

"I've been staying quiet on the process out of respect for the process," Gibbs said. "Some people took that to mean I was disappointed. That's not the case at all. I want to emphasize that I think Dan has been very, very thorough. In the end, what's going to come out of this is that he's going to make a great choice for the Redskins."

The three names that have been mentioned for the Redskins' job are Jim Fassel, a former Giants head coach; Ron Meeks, defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts; and Steve Mariucci, former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions.

"You'd be close," Snyder said in response to whether listing those names would be correct. "I'm a big fan of Ron Meeks. He's a heck of a coach."

Joe Gibbs wrote:"I think we're going to have continuity with the coaching staff in the end," Gibbs said yesterday in a conference call. "And I also think that in the end, and Dan has worked extremely hard throughout the whole process, that we're going to have the right chemistry."

Really, guys, this coaching search has become a pain in the butt.

I´ve never trusted Snyder, not even before he bought the team. I can´t even start to think why he would consider hiring a second hand coach from one your greatest rivals. It´s ridicolous. It shows the francchise has no identity after Gibbs left.

You NEED to start from scratch with a new coach that has not been in the league with a dozen diferrent teams. That´s how you start to build new legends. That´s how Gibbs did it. He came out of San Diego practically out of obscurity to lead the finest Skins teams ever. Then owner JCK was not trying to emulate what George Allen had done, he gave a newcomer a shot and it paid off big time.

I´m sure some of you will say "well, he gave Spurrier a shot". Sorry. Wrong comparison. If you´re going to hire a HC for the Washington Redskins check his background, don´t be impulsive.

Where exactly is our identity without Gibbs? You can´t hold on forever with him. You need to let go and start to build something new that, with time, will succed.

:hmm: You knew Snyder before he bought the Skins?

With all do respect, the team has no identity... YET! A few days and that will change, hopefully in a good way.

I did not know him personally. I knew about his bussiness tactics from the WP.

Sorry, Skinsfreak, you don´t your identity when you hire a coach. You eitther build be winning constantly...or losing frequently.

I agree that Norv was a horrid coach for seven years, but he was still in the playoff hunt when Snyder sacked him. Keep in mind that Turner did win the division and coach the Skins to division round playoffs. Norv was also just a botched snap away from possibly leading the team to the NFC championship game. From a winning standpoint firing a HC in the middle of the season when the team has a winning record and is still in the playoff hunt was a bad move to make.

Truthfully, I feel Snyder personally disliked Norv and would have fired him even if he made the playoffs. It took Norv a while but he did start to find his niche as a coach. Granted he was horrid as the Raiders coach but in all due fairness no one can win in Oakland, no one! So far Norv has taken the Chargers a lot further than the Skins have gone since he has been fired.

As much as people bashed Turner I still would have had him here other than Steve "Spurious", a coaching decision which I said was idiotic the second I heard about it.

Completely agreed, but:

Truthfully, I feel Snyder personally disliked Norv and would have fired him even if he made the playoffs.

I think it's far less insidious than that. When you buyout a company, you have a right to put your own people in charge. Snyder bought the Redskins, and really was looking for any excuse to start his ownership for real...by hiring his own head coach.

It took Norv a while but he did start to find his niche as a coach. Granted he was horrid as the Raiders coach but in all due fairness no one can win in Oakland, no one! So far Norv has taken the Chargers a lot further than the Skins have gone since he has been fired.

Thanks to an incredibly talented team he inherited, built by Schottenheimer and AJ Smith

That team could win 10 games with Dave Campo as a head coach...

What Adam Schefter actually reported yesterday was that despite reports out of Washington that Mariucci was no longer a candidate (thanks JLC) Redskin officials confirmed to Adam in a phone conversation on Tuesday that Mariucci was still very much in contention for the HC job.
