Steve Mariucci?

Post by gamecocks21 »

The Washington Post believes NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci may be emerging as a strong candidate to be the Redskins' next head coach.
This isn't a report, but makes an awful lot of sense. Mariucci has strong ties to new defensive boss Greg Blache and coaches the West Coast offense Jim Zorn learned under Mike Holmgren. Redskins front office man Vinny Cerrato reportedly "loves" Mooch. Mariucci is believed to be interested in coaching again. The Redskins are not commenting on their lengthy coaching search.

JLC wrote a pretty long post about it and I think it sounds plausible. I'm not a huge SM fan, but it could be worse. At least he has a decent track record.

The rotoworld article is based off of a JLC Blog in the WP here http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2008/01/something_to_chew_on.html

I thought that it was all just conjecture (and it still is in fact) and that it had no basis in reality, but I have to admit that he makes some pretty good points here.

Mariucci has been under contract to the NFL Network, but all those deals have out-clauses to pursue coaching gigs. Also, in recent weeks the plane Snyder has used to conduct the coaching searches has been tracked multiple times to LAX, neat the NFL Network set, and then later to cities still involved in the playoffs, in some cases where the NFL Network was using a live set with Mariucci included.

.......

"Those are hires I think Mooch would be very comfortable with," said one of his former assistants. "That makes perfect sense. And I know Steve wants to get back into coaching, because this is the last year of his Detroit contract (Mariucci was fired with two years left on his deal with Detroit, earning $11 million from the team in the process). That makes perfect sense."

One NFL GM, after studying the consecutive hires of Zorn and Blache said: "It all points to Mariucci. It's like you're starting a Washington branch of the West Coast family. Look at the coordinators. Then you've got Vinny who could put it together. That's viable. That's something I think you could sell.

.....

Then, let's think about the word the Redskins made clear again yesterday in their press release about no coach until after the Super Bowl. Well, sure they can, and likely will, interview some coaches involved in the game, but Mariucci is contractually obligated to work that game as well - he's out in Arizona working for the NFL Network right now - so there's another connection.

The whole "we will wait until after the Superbowl thing didn't make sense to me. I still don't think that the Skins want a defensive coach so there goes Spagnolo, and McDaniels already stated that he wasn't leaving Boston.

It is impossible to win in Detroit. Their front office is even worse than ours

Mariucci did a pretty solid job with the 49ers, going 60-43. I'm pretty sure that Fassel was the coach of the Giants when Mariucci's 49ers had that crazy second half comeback in the playoffs. Would definitely prefer him to Fassel.

Well, I definitely like Mariucci over Fassel. Mooch is a players coach and folks who previously played for him said he was always tight with the players.

I personally like SM. I think he would be great in DC. He is a good coach with a good track record (if you do not include Detroit-they bring everyone down). He seems to relate to players and can still coach. He has fire and a lot of common sense. At this point we could still end up with Phil Jackson as a head coach so I will wait for another week to see what happens.

Fassell had talent to work with but did not get the most out of his players-BAD COACHING. Mooch had crap to work with that was there when he came , a front office that worked more for their oppponents- and still he even made Joey Harrington look like he could " win one for the gipper ". He coaches like Gibbs - from the heart. His players were always referred to as " my boys "

I don't think its any big secret why Snyder is waiting until after the super bowl. He is totally milking all of this press and fan interest. He only gets to do the coaching search hype what like once every two or three years? :)

I disagree with one caveat:

If you take away the four years that Joe Gibbs was with us, our Front Office record is quite comparable to theirs.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

Who hasn't done poorly with Detroit? Marinelli hasn't done much better there and Matt Millen isn't exactly in the running for executive of the year. Mariucci is a good coach and when he coached San Fransisco he had records of 13-3, two 12-4 seasons, and a 10-6 season. He did lose a lot in the playoffs but Steve Young was in the decline of his career for most of that tenure and Jeff Garcia doesn't have great postseason success. Mooch is a much better candidate than Fassel and he works well with his players.

He is better than some of the other names floated out there. Has a history with vinny, Zorn and Blance.

He did a good job in SF, when they were in cap jail.

I think Mariucci makes some sense, though Fassel has the NFC East experience, as does Spagoulo.

But Mariucci (minus the Lions portion of his Resume) was pretty strong in SF. So that would be the best choice of the leading candidates so far.

I think there is something to this.

I would not blame him for the lions. He had Joey H. playin ok there. But that team was/is a disaster.

I would prefer the "mooch" to fassel. But, more than likely he is not coming here.

Out of all the rumoured candidates I like Steve Spaguolo the most.
