Marty Ball: Part Deux?

Post by hogproud »

Okay...I'm throwing this out there because the way this thing is unfolding I would not rule ANYTHING out.

Marty Schottenheimer is available. He is a proven winner (in the regular season at least) and probably would like one last shot at winning a Super Bowl and repairing his legacy, which right now is suspect when it comes to the post-season.

It has been well documented that Snyder and Marty have smoothed out their differences and are once again on very good terms.

Is it within the realm of reality to think that Snyder would bring him back to correct the wrong of letting him go after the 2001 season?

With the secrecy involved and the lack of information...nothing would surpirse me at this point.

I don't see it happening, but like you said, anything at this point seems possible. I actually would see this as some good news in light of how things have gone over the last few weeks. I was a Marty fan the one season he was with us and thought it was a mistake to let him go after he went 8-3 (after starting 0-5). That and letting Trent Green go are two of the biggest screw ups (of many) in my opinion that have taken place during the Snyder era. Like many have said, for a long time I was a defender of Snyder, but have grown weary of how he runs the franchise from the standpoint of being impatient with everything. He seems to have no appreciation of building team chemistry and wonder if he really did learn anything from Gibbs. Really fear that our players will splinter, seeing as how they obviously now know their owner doesn't listen or care about what they need as players.
Don't like being negative, but seems likely we'll be "rebuilding" for another few years, Snyder will become impatient and then we'll start over again. Guess all we can do is wait.

I think Coach Schottenheimer has way too much self respect to ever work for Danny Boy again.
They may be on good terms in social settings, but I would be highly surprised if that warm and fuzzy feeling would carry over to the already highly-charged NFL workplace.

My feeling is that there is a possibility that Marty would swallow his pride if given an opportunity. The trend during this hiring cycle around the entire league is to go fresh...abstain from retreads. I don't think Marty is gonna get too many more looks. If the Danny gave him a wink, I think Marty would jump.

KW, I'm with you...this team took a HUGE step back with SS coming in after Marty. That was a travesty.

I hadn't heard that they were back on good terms. I still think it's pretty unlikely but we can dream, right?

I won't be shocked by anything at this point.

I don't think it would ever happen, but if it did, could Marty fire Vinnie again?

Forget Marty, let's skip the middle man and go right to the Ole Call Coach! I bet we can get him out of South Carolina.

we need someone fresh with new ideas, I say we pray June Jones away from his new home in SMU. Did you see the way his offense clicked they pitched and cotched all over the field. I think it was luck and the cross pacific flight that cost Hawaii in the Suger Bowl.

While we are at it, I know everyone else see that JC is a waste, lets dump him now and take Colt Brennen with the first pick. Man I don't know if anyone else saw him underthrow receivers like I did today at the Senior Bowl, but it was impressive!

It will be like '02 and '03 all over again!

Great points! I'm thinking we consider Petrino. I don't think it was the pros, I think the Vick thing just shook him up. Maybe we could trade our whole roster and our draft picks for the next 10 years for Brady. It would shore up our QB position at least. And on the same plain of reality, I wonder if Marty would come back and coach for us?

I don't remember where, but I read someplace that he and Danny have mended their relationship. Though the article pointed out, not enough to ever have Marty coach here, at least with Vinnie around.

At the moment, Marty S looks pretty good, but I doubt it can happen. Whoever Snyder wants as coach must be someone who likes Blache and Zorn...assuming the secret new head coach is an offense guy, he probably suggested Zorn.

That is, it could be Snyder's lame attempt to do what Beathard and Gibbs did in 1981: keep the defense together by hiring Pardee's best assistant as defensive coordinator, and let Gibbs and a new bunch replace Joe Walton's offense.

(And, just as sometimes I like to remind people that Larry Brown is the best Redskin runner of all time, it's maybe important to remind people that Richie Petibon was the best defensive coordinator -- not counting Allen and Pardee because they were head coaches.)

Good point about mentioning Petibon and his in relation to our current situation. Makes me feel a little better thinking of it that way at least.

Sorry for not having the free time to find what may be a well known answer, but has Gibbs at any point publicly stated that he endorsed Williams as the next head coach? I've seen statements where he wished for a smooth transition and suggested that he would like to see the staff stay together, but no mention of his vote of anyone being promoted. I'm just trying to make some sense of this.
