Reports: Lions decide to deal or release DT Rogers

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Reports: Lions decide to deal or release DT Rogers

Post by andyjens89 »

The Detroit Lions have decided to part ways with defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, according to reports in Detroit.

The Lions have decided to trade or release Rogers, according to reports. Coach Rod Marinelli and team spokesman Bill Keenist have both said they expect all players under contract to return.

Rogers, who has served one four-game suspension for taking a banned dietary supplement and could face an eight-game suspension if he tests positive again, has three years left on his contract.

In addition, Rogers, who was coming off knee and shoulder surgeries last offseason, was listed at 340 pounds but weighed at least 360.

Rogers, who has been to two Pro Bowls, had a good start to the season and was named NFC defensive player of the week after returning a 66-yard interception for a touchdown and recording 2½ sacks in the Lions' 44-7 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 9. But in the six-game losing streak that followed, he disappeared.

On Jan. 17, Marinelli said that he expects every player under contract to report for the Lions' offseason conditioning program, including Rogers, but he realized that Rogers' weight would be an issue.

"He was a good player for us for nine games," Marinelli said at the time. "But it's the endurance all the way through the season, that's what I'm looking for."

Only if he's very, very cheap. We have no need for underachievers on this team.

Maybe after we've cleared about 20-25 million dollars from our 2008 cap number.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Yeah. And he's not going to be cheap.

Classic fat-ass underachieving DT.

It seems to me that there are a lot of under-achieving players in the NFL - there are a lot of players that have come out of college recently that seem to just want to get onto a team and get their big contract and then seem to stop making any effort to be as good a player as they can.

Players with desire are much better than any player with talent and no real desire. To make an NFL squad you have to have some talent - to not play and practice with desire is very common unfortunately.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Another case of a talented player on a loser team.

Alot of talent that goes to underacheiving teams never fully develop, part of that has to be the enviroment they are in.

I bet if this kid was drafted by the Patriots, he would be a much better player.

You know that old saying - you can lead a horse to water ... an awful lot of players are just cashing their checks - If he was on the Patriots and playing like he has for Detroit - they would just cut him - they do not mess around with guys like this for very long.

He recorded 7 sacks last year. I think that's at least as many as all our DT's combined. Certainly worth a look.
