Hiring of Fassel appears imminent

By Ryan O'Halloran
January 24, 2008

Jim Fassel might become the Redskins' new coach.

It appears Jim Fassel's hiring as the Washington Redskins' coach is a matter of when, not if.

And it has become apparent that owner Dan Snyder is going in the opposite direction of the continuity approach he talked about 16 days ago at Joe Gibbs' retirement press conference.

The wild, crazy days that marked Snyder's first five seasons as owner could return with the hiring of Fassel — perhaps as soon as today — and two new coordinators.

Seattle quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn interviewed at Snyder's Potomac mansion yesterday for the offensive coordinator spot soon to be vacated by Al Saunders, and Fassel has targeted Baltimore's Rex Ryan to be his defensive coordinator.

A league source confirmed Ryan remains under contract with Baltimore and the Ravens want to keep him. The Redskins would have to gain permission to speak with Ryan because the move is a lateral one.

Fassel and Ryan worked on the same Ravens staff for 2½years.

One veteran Redskins player was semi-resigned to Williams not getting the job once Vinny Cerrato was elevated to executive vice president/football operations Tuesday.

"Vinny has been Dan's right-hand man so long," the player said. "Now that he has this new power, there's no way Gregg will handle that. I just hope the whole staff doesn't change over."

Bear with me here guys.Hes already our head coach I mean, after his interview on Monday we suddenly found interest in Rex Ryan?.But now that I read this and "IF"you read it carefully it is saying Fassuel has "ASKED TO GET REX RYAN AS THE NEW D Coordinator".So in which means hes been our head coach already.ESPN might of said it hasn't happened yet but there taking there time to get new staffs.I hope Al Stays but Greg Williams was not gonna be the answer.

Actually for all does Fassuel doubters please -E-X-Plain to me why you believe Greg will be a good head coach?.Hes trying to get us a D coordinator who's is alot better than Greg Williams and well be a answer for us and young players.

I mean first you guys said"fire Gibbs and Greg Williams mid season'' and now you guys want both of them back. But stop making it seem like Fassuel is that bad ''he has had 2 collage interviews last year and declined it.
Just face it guys. And like it Jim Fassuel is our new head coach.

But since hes our HC now I'll guess ill Say he looks like 007

How do you spell a guy's name wrong EVERY time when you quoted an article that has the correct spelling in the TITLE?

It's F-a-s-s-e-l.

Not Fassuel.

he has had 2 collage interviews last year and declined it

Two collage interviews eh? Does that mean that he put a whole bunch of photographs of himself on to a piece of cardboard and then interviewed it?

Collage interviews. ROTFALMAO. Wow.

As for the sentiment of the post... anyone else smell a man-crush?
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Man-crushes aside, did you read the very end of that snippet?

"Vinny has been Dan's right-hand man so long," the player said. "Now that he has this new power, there's no way Gregg will handle that. I just hope the whole staff doesn't change over."

Could a power struggle have been another reason why Joe walked away from the team? Did Dan tell Joe he would promote Vincent to VPOFO?

I would feel much better if "Fassuel" looked like a younger Sean Connery, the only real 007.

"Double O Fossil"...I think that would be a great name for him. It's catchy, with a certain cash-ay :)

But really, as the process continues, this hire is seeming more and more likely. As I've pondered the reasons why and tried to jump into the Front Office's psyche, I cam up with the following possibilities:

1. As the article stated above, there probably is some type of power struggle going on at the top. Gregg saw the control Joe had, and in his several interviews may have intimated that he should have similar ability. Now, Dan would do that for a legend like Coach Joe, but not for Gregg.

2. Dan believes we should be one of the elite teams in the NFL (and while I think we're pretty good, we're not elite), and so he'd compare us to the current elite team of the league, the Pats. They smashed us, and Gregg's gameplan got shredded. Rex Ryan's plan with the Ravens was fairly successful, and that might be playing a role.

3. Prior Ego and staff issues - Gregg was humbled in '06 by the poor play of his defensive unit, but prior to that, he thought the strengths of the system could overcome talent deficiences. He apparently didn't advocate for the returns of Smoot, Pierce, and Clark and I think I remember a phrase being thrown about that "he didn't need them." As far as staff, being unable to reign in former LB coach Dale Lindsay in his dealings with Lavar, as well the difficulties the team had with safeties' coach Steve Jackson when Jerry Gray was brought in to coach the secondary may be saying to Dan that the man can't control his staff or get them to work in a harmonious way with the players.

All of this to say that these factors may be playing a role in why Dan and Vinny are looking in another direction, and why Fassel might get the nod, who knows. I sure don't.

But I do know that "00Fossil" is a gem of a nickname, if he were to become coach and be successful, it would be kinda cool, and if he sucked, it'd be appropriate as well...that's what I rollin' with... thx portiz2skins...
Two formation shifts, one man in motion, and a counter trey...those were the days...
