All of my reporting leads to this trio topping the coaching staff.
Jim Fassel is expected to be named head coach, and the hold up is negotiations with the Ravens regarding Rex Ryan. As I previously reported, contrary to other reports, the Ravens retain Ryan's coordinator rights and can block a lateral move. They appear to be doing that. The sides may reach an agreement, but Ravens ownership badly wants to keep Ryan, who the players love. Fassel and Ryan spoke as recently as last night sources said and Ryan interviewed with Snyder Sunday night, according to sources.
Zorn, as we were the first to report, interviewed for the offensive coordinator job. He is set to depart around 5:40 and if all goes well he would be the leading candidate to replace Al Saunders (with whatever fancy title they want to use).
Everyone is waiting to hammer the contract details out but barring a last second change of heart, disaster, whatever, this is how it's shaping up
from Washington Post
Also, John Riggins also mentioned on his radio show that something is on the horizon and he doesn't want to say anything because he want's to have everything verified first.
Not sure about feelings. Wish the best for GW but Rex Ryan is a hell of a coach as well and maybe a fresh start will be a good thing too. Fassel did a great job developing QB's and Jim Zorn was pretty good himself. Not to mention his offense is a pretty good one as well. GW's seems to not click with our current players and its easier to change coaches than players.
Same old Snyder, same old Vinny... gotta hate em... nothing ever changes. Im so sick of this. Danny needs to sell this team and move on... Its a friggin coaching carosel every three darn years...
Its hard to be a skins fan sometimes especially with Dan Snyder as the owner- Al Davis and the Raiders front office is the only worse managment than us

I posted this in another thread but I think it fits here as well...
Jim Zorn has been the qb coach of the Seahawks since 2001. Obviously he doesn't call the plays, but here is the breakdown of how Seattle's offense has done since he got there. It's broken down by NFL rank in yards per game and points per game...
Here is where the Seattle qb's have ranked in passer rating since 2001:
2001: 28th (Hasselbeck's first year with Seattle, 3rd year as a pro)
2002: 6th
2003: 8th
2004: 17th
2005: 4th
2006: 19th
2007: 8th
Looking at Zorn and Fassel, there does appear to be a theme emerging here. Fassel is known for his work with qb's. He won an NFC East title with Danny Kannel as his qb and reached the Super Bowl with Kerry Collins. Zorn has spent the last 7 years as a qb coach and has done a good job in working with and helping develop Matt Hasselbeck. Obviously this is all speculation but if these rumors are true, it appears that Snyder and Vinny are trying to put together a staff that they think will be able to develop JC.

Consistency?!? Let's review the Gibbs years.
Year 1: 6-10
Year 2: 10-6, playoffs, 1-1
Year 3: 5-11
Year 4: 9-7, playoffs, 0-1
Every year the win-loss record fluctuated by at least 4 games, and never in the same direction as the year before. There was little that was "consistent" about the last four years, at least on the field. All the people mindlessly blathering on about consistency and continuity are just repeating buzzwords of questionable value. The Saints went to the NFC title game the same year they got a new coach, and the following year, with no coaching change, they didn't even make the playoffs. Sometimes, new blood is needed, and it's not always a bad thing.

I don't know that I agree with this. Why did every player that talked to the media lobby for Williams? Because he was threatening them behind doors?
The players like him as a defensive coordinator but I tell you they won't like him as a head coach. I honestly think that there is something that Dan Snyder knows about Gregg Williams that we don't know and thats why Dan Snyder doesn't want GW as our head coach, something must have happened.

How can you blame Dan Snyder for this? Joe Gibbs is the one that retired isn't he? Last time I checked Dan Snyder begged Joe Gibbs to stay.

Try being a 40 whiner fan. With John Dork as the owner

Isn't it in the players' interest to lobby for Williams? If he's hired, they're tight with him. If not, no harm done. What new coach would take offense at a player's loyalty to a former coach?

I wasnt really all for GW as HC because his past history in Buffalo was filled with rebellion of players and less than average results ( i was more on the Cowher bandwagon). To hire a new HC is one thing but to hire a new GM, and all new coaching staff is another. The only reason Vinny got the job is because he's dan snyders little locker room spy and dan will find out that its lil vinnies fault we have been in the salary cap problem for the last few years to begin with. Fassel is a decent coach and the two assistants are proven at their former employers but man i thought the key word this off season was continuity???? When will dan learn and stop making the same mistakes over and over and over? See ya on draft day Vinny.

Here is some info on Rex Ryan. From 1999-2004 he was a defensive assistant with the Ravens. He spent 6 years as the defensive line coach. From 2005-2007 he was Baltimore's defensive coordinator.
In his 3 years as the DC of the Ravens, this is where his defenses ranked among NFL teams in terms or points and yards per game...
2005: 5th (yards per game), 10th (points per game)
2006: 1st, 1st
2007: 6th, 23rd
Since 2001, here is where the Ravens have ranked in sacks...
I don't think that it's a coincidence that the Skins are after a DC that has worked as a defensive line coach and been apart of a defensive that has been knows for getting after the qb. It appears from the supposed hires that the Skins are focusing on offensive coaches that are known for working with qb's and a defensive coach who is aggressive, has experience working with defensive lines, and pressures the qb. These are the areas on offense and defense where we have struggled in recent years, so even though I have reservations about Zorn and Fassel (not Ryan, the guy is a hell of a coach), I will give Danny and Vinny some credit in that it appears that they are focusing on the areas in which this team has struggled with their supposed new hires.

Hey man thankyou for being positive about this. I'm not all on the Fassel bandwagon but I will remain positive and hope that Dan Snyder knows what he is doing.

Outside of a JC (who would have to learn a new system) and guys like Daniels, who are favorites of Gregg, I cant imagine that the rest really care all that much. I would imagine that they prefer to see GW, but highly doubt that they care enough to actually lobby for him outside of making a couple of comments to the media.

believe,it or not.I think Ryan is much better than Greg all around.OUR DL FOR YEARS!!!! ....has not caused pressure under Greg, and now we have Rex who can develop young guys an our players to get too the QB's alot more now.

My theory on the reasons behind the hires could be completely wrong and the backgrounds of these coaches coupled with the areas that the Skins struggle in could all be coincidence, but if it's not, then I actually have to give Snyder and Vinny some credit here. There obviously is some concern with the new hires (continuity being a major concern) and when I originally heard about Fassel I was dead set against it. But, having watched the playoffs this season, to me it became evident that the keys to winning are consistent, high quiality qb play and the ability to rush the passer. The Giants and Patriots are both perfect examples of this. So even though GW was probably the safer choice, I do applaud Snyder for recognizing where this team has struggled and trying to do something about it. I'm trying my best here to take a cautiously optimistic view of these (supposed) hires.

Its true.Lets not forget Faussel actually knows the "ERA" of the NFL these days.Gibbs was confused and was trying to learn does things, thats simply why it has taking us this long to be this good. All though Gibbs was still good we need to get younger and better. So please stop hatting on Faussel.

Do Fassel or Zorn even have a playbook? If Snyder really does this, I'm okay with Ryan, he is a solid coach, as some have mentioned.
But Fassel and Zorn? Just because you are a good coach, doesn't mean you are qualified to call plays and match wits with opposing defensive coordinators. I have to admit I'm not all that familiar with Zorn. Does he even have a playbook? Holgrem has been the play caller in Seattle.
