I will call the Redskins ticket office and drop my 4 season tickets if this is announced. The only thing is they won't care because of all the people on the waiting list. I thought Gibbs was going to hang around and be an advisor. After all that went down this year, I can't believe Snyder would disrespect Williams in this manner, it is sick. Of course this is all a rumor at this point.

If true, Snyder has learned absolutely nothing from these last 4 years. If people thought that Jim Fassel was a good HC, he wouldn't be unemployed right now.

I actually liked the idea of him before Gibbs came back, but now? Are you kidding me? Do we flush the 2008 season now or wait until the preseason starts?

Fassel and Rex Ryan

Continues to look like a pair of former Ravens could be perched here in a matter of time.

I keep hearing that Fassel is in a great position to get this job, and when it all hits the fan that former Baltimore DC Rex Ryan would replace Gregg Williams if it goes down this way. That is the hot rumor at the Senior Bowl, and Rex knows Jim and Vinny Cerrato has ties to Rex. Makes sense. So you would be looking at major overhauls to the staff.

Snyder and Cerrato are mulling this over tonight but I would not be surprised to see someone get an offer Wed. At this point I am told the Redskins have still said nothing to Williams and the rest of the coaches and all signs pointing to Fassel. Snyder could always go the other way, and, this organization is capable of anything, but there is lots of angst among the players and coaches - especially those down at the Senior Bowl in Mobile.

One other thing that hasn't been mentioned. Ryan runs a 3-4. So not only would be have lots of coaching changes, but we would also have to make some major personnel moves in order to implement a new defensive system.

Great point, this makes it even more unbelievable. Hey Danny boy, we are heading in the right direction, why make such drastic changes?

Ryan ran the 46 for the last two year in Baltimore.

Thanks for the correction. Most of the articles I saw on him mentioned a 3-4.

Maybe this is the season when we drop all the high salary guys and take the cap hit on this season to free up money later on. Vinny is a genius........

Since the day Snyder took over in my heart I've believed that all the Snyder and Vinny bashing was simply because the man is young and rich. Well, I've been a sucker. I watched the press conference with Gibbs announcing his depature and I believed Snyder when he preached continuity. I got angry with pundits who said he would likely pull a move based on who his 'boys' were or an urge to control or do something splashy. I've been a sucker. What a waste of time. The heart and soul has been gutted from my team by that jerk. Only four years of Gibbs made it even partially tolerable. And what about Gibbs? He bails and the staff he hired and expected to keep running the show because they were 'close' gets blown up? He should have known better. Snyder is all about Snyder - it's like having T.O. Own your team - self centered and insecure. What a joke. Even if something happens and he stays with Williams, the 'Fassel' watch will be ongoing. This ranks with firing Norv in the middle of the season, hiring Marty then firing him the next year, and hiring Spurrier as the most idiotic things he's done - hold on - that's all he's done besides hire Gibbs. Hhhhmmmmm. Stupid is as stupid does and I was a sucker to think otherwise.

Me too - I just can't take it any more. If the team is not going to try and win why should I invest thousands of dollars into seeing them? This is really sad.

I am more upset at the idea of having a Ryan a D-coordinator than Fassel as a HC (although the latter makes me want to :puke:.

Buddy Ryan's 46 defense was the equivalant of NFL snake oil. Sure Buddy coached the 85 Bears D, but that D would have been great no matter who was coaching or what sceam they used. They had probowlers at almost every position and that is the only way Buddy's snake oil works.

When he was at Philly (and Philly had a ton of talent), they were great in the reg. season, but as soon as they faced someone that could protect their QB, they went down in flames.

I hope if Rex comes, he leaves that 46 snake oil in charm city.

Besides two former Ravens coaches :puke:

And isn't he still employed by the Ravens.

Name a D-coordinator that didn't look like a genius coaching the Crows D? Maybe it is the players!

That was more of a function of how unbalanced those teams were. Those Eagles teams had a disgustingly good defense, and basically an offense consisting of Randall Cunningham behind one of the worst offensive lines in the history of the NFL. No running game, either.

Easy to shut down that kind of offense in the playoffs.

Why don't you call them now instead of wasting your time. I'm tired reading about how people are going to get rid of their tickets and Redskins gear if they indeed hire Fassel. This is just a rumor so instead of saying hey I'm getting rid of my tickets and I'm gonna get rid of Redskins gear sit back and relax. So, who do you think they should hire? GW? Well, last I checked GW hasn't done s**t as a head coach. He is
-14 games under .500 and I don't want to hear any excuses he sucked b***s as a coach, but you know what if I had season tickets as much as I would disagree with them hiring GW as the coach I would still support the team and go to the games. Grow up and learn that there will be things that a team will do that might make you mad. I am an Oakland A's fan and I've just watched them trade away 2 players that are damn good players and I was quite pissed, because there actually saying were done for 08. I'm still a loyal fan through thick and thin.

The Washington Redskins and the New York Jets are reportedly interested in hiring Ryan as their coordinator, but Ryan said he had not heard from the Redskins as of Wednesday morning.

I don't see the logic of this statement. It seems to me we potentially have better personnel for the 3-4 than the 3-4. I'd love to see Mongomey in the middle, a new stud DE from the draft with Carter, Wilson rushing from an LB or DL position on special occasions, and our present 4 linebackers, all of whom are good players. That would also give us DL reserves who would be excellent in spot duty.

What's to dislike in a system that would give us seven guys who can rush the QB and cover the short past and draw. Frankly, I don't think this setup would cost us squat against the running game, and on short yardage situations we could still go with the beef.

Like I mentioned in another thread, all 3 of Baltimore's linemen were over 300 pounds. We don't have that type of size. Montgomery may or may not fit at nose tackle. Probably better to have someone that has actually played that roll in a 3-4 before. Additionally, Carter struggled when the 49ers switched him to a linebacker position when they went to a 3-4. Add in the injury to Rocky, and we don't have either the linemen or linebackers for a 3-4. However, there is still free agency and the draft so it's not impossible. But with our current defensive roster, it doesn't appear to be that good of a fit. But as I've mentioned before, I'd be thrilled to have Ryan. I just think that it might take a little while to get the players in here to fit a 3-4 (if that's what he really runs as there's been some confusion regarding that).

I live near Baltimore, and unfortunately am "lucky" enough to get more than my fair share of Ravens coverage.

While the Ravens nominally employ a 3-4, they in reality play more of a 4-3.

The Ravens have Dwan Edwards, Kelly Gragg, and Haloti Ngata play as DE/DT/DE. In reality, Gragg and Ngata play more inside (like DTs in a 4-3), and Terrell Suggs plays more DE than LB.

A normal 3-4 in the front 7 looks like this:

Code: Select all

       LB     LB
LB                   LB
    DE    DT    DE

The Ravens play it more like

Code: Select all

        LB    LB
LB
     DE   DT   DE   LB

What personell are you looking at?
Montgomery is 6-6 315 and you want to stick in at NT? Griff would be a better fit there at 6-3 311 but he has trouble staying healthy playing in the gap, even Golston or Boschetti would appear a to be better fits than AM but both are inconsistant at times. That means bringing a Vet and drafting for depth.

crazyhorse1 wrote:a new stud DE from the draft with Carter, Wilson rushing from an LB or DL position on special occasions,

Carter tried that before (why do you think he's in Washington & not SF?)

crazyhorse1 wrote:and our present 4 linebackers, all of whom are good players. That would also give us DL reserves who would be excellent in spot duty.

What four would that be? Rocky is hurt and may not be ready for camp. Marcus was hurt on and off all year and a big cap number, That'll leave LFB learning a new scheme with whoever your fourth guy may be.

crazyhorse1 wrote:What's to dislike in a system that would give us seven guys who can rush the QB and cover the short past and draw.

First, it's a good chance that getting the coach that will bring the scheme to Washington will cost some type of compensation to the Ratbrids
Second, the last two years of developing young guys like Montgomery and Golston will be out the window as they will now have learn the NT spot.
Third, we still need a guy to play centerfield so LL can creep back down into the box regardless of how the front seven line up.

crazyhorse1 wrote:Frankly, I don't think this setup would cost us squat against the running game, and on short yardage situations we could still go with the beef.

The 3-4 is a great run stopping defense when you have the people to play the roles. The player the current have played roles that gave up a total of 58 more yards than the team that Rex started converting from a 4 down lineman scheme to three, two years ago

Anyway you look at it, it's a step back. GW got them back into the top ten. If it anit broke.....
