How in the world can Randy Moss even be considered for this award? The only thing he came back from was being a self centered, egotistical, prima donna, all around jerk. He had no injury. There was no outside factor hampering his play. It was all about Randy. Sure this year he has put his ego in check, but after he gets his next big paycheck I'm sure he will once again join the ranks of malcontents everywhere.
Big Ben was hampered especially early in the season after his motorcycle crash. However, I did not see that great of an improvement this year over last to warrant the votes. I guess they based it on 11 interceptions this year as compared to 23 last year.
Favre had 3 less interceptions with 10 more TDs this year compared to last year. His QB rating was 25 points higher, and his completion percentage went up about 10 points. Favre is a favorite among sportswriters and will always get a lot of credit.
Jamal Lewis ended up with about 170 more yards this year over last with the same amount of TDs (9). If you think 170 yards is worth 5 votes keep reading until the end.
Bobby Engram deserved more than the 3 votes he received. He was injured last year and only played in 7 games and had only 24 receptions. He came back this year with career highs in receptions (94) and yardage (1,147).
Kerney also was injured last year and only played in 9 games. He also had a comeback year with 14.5 sacks. His 2 votes were justly earned.
Derek Anderson only appeared in 5 games last year starting in 3 of those. My issue with his 2 votes is the fact that he was not injured. He didn't play because of coach's decision. His comeback was from the bench. Two votes wasted.
Amani Toomer injured for half the season last year came back to double his games and numbers for the season. His 1 vote earned.
Albert Haynesworth received one vote. The time missed in 2006 was not due to injury, but for being suspended for kicking a defenseless player in the head. Vote wasted.
Mario Williams had a breakout year this season with 14 sacks after only 4.5 sacks last year. However, this is comeback player not breakout player. vote wasted.
Andre Carter received the last vote. His numbers are surprisingly similar to those of 2006. He did post 4.5 more sacks, but the way he was playing at the end of '06was as well as he played all of this year. I will have to say his vote not earned.
Why did I just bore you with all those statistics? It's simple, Clinton Portis missed half of last year with a dislocated shoulder and then a broken hand. In 8 games he rushed for 523 yards. This year behind a less than stellar offensive line CP rushed for 1262 yards. If Jamal Lewis's 170 yards is worth 5 votes then what is almost 750 yards worth? Nothing. Clinton Portis did not receive any votes. Instead the media wasted votes on Randy Moss coming back from laziness and Albert Haynesworth coming back from stupidity. I have no problem with the selection of Greg Ellis. I do firmly believe that guys such as Engram, Toomer, and especially Portis really got the short end of the stick on this one. The fact that the media so carelessly voted for some of the biggest idiots,(Moss), and some of their favorites (Big Ben and Brett), almost tarnishes an award that Ellis so justly deserved. The fact that Portis received absolutely no votes also shows the continous media bias against the Redskins. These guys are also probably the same guys voting against Monk for the HOF.
