I'm not the cap expert (see 1niks) but hopefully a lot. I almost don't even care. He's getting paid too much as it is. It should be adios for ocho. Sorry TRO.

Fact is we will have to try and do the best we can with the cap again and try and improve the team without digging too deep a hole - we do have a number of draft picks and while that will not provide any real help, for starting caliber players, it will help provide depth and youth

we do need to get as creative as possible with 3 real needs - a really good pass rushing DE, a shut down CB and a big, really good WR - each of these guys needs to be experienced to be effective, these are not available out of college

Unfortunately this is not looking like a good FA crop :( BUT we can always hope that our talent evaluators will find the talent that will become great when mixed in with our team

To fix our D-Line problems, we need to release Daniels and Evans, pick up a situational 3rd down rusher some where. and then spend some draft picks to get younger.

i beleive chris wilson is going to be a solid contributer. kind of like KGB is with Green Bay. And Andre Carter showed this year that he's not completely awful. Hopefully he can keep that up next year. And even tho they didnt get to the QB enough, our DT group did a great job at runstopping. GW did a good job rotating them around and keeping them rested this year.

The last thing we need to do is go and sign a free agent like Haynesworth to a huge deal. For 1 we cant afford it, and 2 we dont need to. We have 6 draft picks this year. Build through the draft.

But I haven't seen anything from Gollston or Montgomery that leads me to believe that they are starting caliber players. We need to keep Griffin, sign a defensive tackle, and draft or sign a pass rushing defensive end.

Montgomery and Golston out performed Griffin this year. Montgomery made numerous of plays this year and out shine Griffin. Golston had a good year especially down the stretch he got great penetration on short yardage plays that led to turnover on down twice against the New York Giants and help with a safety in Minn. I believe Montgomery is going to be a force in this league if he continues to improve like he did this year and Golston would be a very good third DT off the bench and even a starter if he improves. I believe Griffin is making to much money for the little production he has given us. Haynesworth will be to much money, lets continue to stay away from the big name players and build from the draft.

Our defensive line is mediocre at best and you want Golston and Montgomery as the starters? We need to improve the line and starting those two doesn't accomplish that at all. We need a serious talent influx into our line. Just look at how inefective our line is at pressuring the qb. Carter is undersized so that makes our interior linemen even more important. I'll agree that Montgomery showed signs, but I disagree about Golston. He is a backup at best. Look at a team like Jacksonville. They are very physical on defense and it all starts with their dominant defensive line. Just look at how much time opposing qb's had against our line and how difficult it was for us to get pressure with our front 4.

Our defensive line is mediocre at best and you want Golston and Montgomery as the starters?.
Just read what I wrote
Golston would be a very good third DT off the bench and even a starter if he improves.
"If" he continue to impove he "could" be a starter. Not, one time did I mention that I "wanted" Golston "and" Montgomery as the starters. Golston also took a lot of plays from Griffin. "If" he improves as much as Montgomery did during the off-season he can be the starter. I just believe adding another DE id more important than DT right now.

The quote that I was addressing stated "haven't seen anything from Gollston or Montgomery that leads me to believe that they are starting caliber players" Montgomery which I stated is a starter and played very well this year. Golston which I said can be a very good 3rd DT. And never did I mention that we didnt need to address the D-line. We should have address the d-line 4 years ago. I believe instead of picking a big name in free agency we need to build the D-line through the draft, adding to Wilson,Montgomery,Golston, and Carter.

Sorry, dont know how to pull quotes.

D-line- We need a stud Left DE. I'm not sure if Wilson is the key here, although every time he's in the game, he makes plays. With the 10th pick the Redskins select Quentin Groves. We also need a 4th or 5th round mamouth.
DE Carter - is 28 (solid - has maybe three more yrs)
DT Montgomery - 2nd year (will get better)
DT Griffin - is 31 (cut him)
DT Alexander, Golston - 2nd yr (love Alexander's strength and Golston's getting better)
DE Daniels (cut this old bag)

LB - We're pretty set here for next year except for some depth
LB Washington - 31 - (need to replace him in the draft in 09)
LB McIntosh - should be a star
LB Fletcher - Still has a couple yrs left in him
LB Blades - spitting image of Fletcher...hopefully

CB - We need a draft pick here if Springs is gone. 2nd round selection would be Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie or DeJuan Tribble
CB Springs - Not sure if he'll be back. needs replaced
CB Rodgers could be a star...will step up and be a #1 next year
CB Smoot - Serve's as an ok #2 great back-up and good mentor to draft pick

S - Incomplete - not enough depth in the draft this yr
S Landry - is a stud...second coming?
S Doughty - Did pretty well at the end of the season
S Fox - serviceable
S Prioleau - CUT HIM

O Line - One of the best in the business...when healthy and Heyer was a great pickup. How about Adam Kraus in the 3rd? 320 lb G

WR - We need one playmaker here (Marcus Monk Round 4?) Anthony Mix played with Campbell at Auburn.
WR Moss - is 28 (not a primary receiver and if he continues the spider man act and spins the ball on EVERY first down, I'm going to punch the TV) Would be a great #2
WR Randell El - is 28 (Not a second receiver and if he continues to point to the sky and do his rainbow jesture on every first down...) Would be a great #3
WR Lloyd - best practice player in the league. Cut him on June 2nd
WR Thrash - Getting older. One more year?
WR McCardell - The old bag is our best receiver this year. Would be a great Car Wash employee
TE Cooley - Turning into a game breaker

QB - We're set at starter and backup - need a draft pick.
Campbell - Will be a star
Collins - re-sign him
Brunell - Cut him

RB - Pretty solid
RB Portis is only 26 (needs another offseason to rehab and to lose 5 lbs)
RB Betts - Solid #2
RB Cartright - Great special teams player
RB Sellers - is 32 (Getting old but we need one more yr out of him although I like Alexander here as well)
Miss you 21

What we need this offseason and things that need to be done

Post by rustedrootdown »

This is what I think we need this offseason:

1. A WR to start oposite Moss. Randle El is awesome but he works best out of the slot and I think if we had a Big WR opposite Moss we could use Randle El like the Patriots use Wes Welker. Bernard Berrian might be a nice free agent pickup. We also need to keep caldwell and thrash as the backups

2. Jon Jansen to come back healthy or someone to replace him from the draft or free agency. I love Jansen but he gets hurt all the time now and though Heyer is gonna be good hes not close to ready.

3. A DE to start opposite of carter. I would go with a DT but the only one that would be worth pursing would be hansworth and he would cost to much and compensation would be to high. Regardless I think a name that gets overlooked alot is Terrell Suggs. I think he would be a great pickup that wouldn't cost us anything in way of draft picks.

4. A safety. Doughty is good but we need more. My suggestion is to keep Springs and move him to safety. I think it would prolong his career and would be great for team chemistry.

5. A cornerback to take Springs spot. I think that drafting a corner with the first or second would be the way to go here.

These are the things I think we should do:

1. Sign Williams to be the coach and keep Saunders on as the coordinator. I know continuity is what this team needs and I think that it would be best if the two stayed on.

2. Resign Collins (If Saunders stays on, cut him otherwise) and keep Springs and switch him to saftey.

3. DO NOT SIGN COWHER!!! I have nothing against him but there are two reasons I don't want him. 1. We would be starting over from scratch and 2. I HATE THE 3-4 DEFENSE AND YOU KNOW THATS WHAT HE WOULD WANT.

Regardless if all of this was followed are starting lineup would look like this:

QB Jason Campbell
HB Clinton Portis
FB Mike Sellers
TE Chris Cooley
WR Santana Moss/Antwaan Randle el
WR (Bernard Berrian)
LT Chris Samuels
LG Pete Kendell
C Casey Rabach
RG Randy Thomas
RT Jon Jansen

DE Andre Carter
DT (1st round draft pick)
DT Cornelious Griffin
DE (Terrell Suggs)
LLB Marcus Washington
MLB London Fletcher
RLB Rocky Mcintosh
CB Carlos Rodgers/(Draft Pick)
SS Shawn Springs
FS Laron Landry
CB Fred Smoot

Regardless what do you think?

P.S. I really think we could use a G.M. too. All Snyders talk about how great they are doing as a front office is fine as long as Gibbs was making the calls. I am afraid that Snyder might want to bring Jeff George back

Or we could go crazy and do this.

1. Keep Shawn Springs and convert him to safety.
2. Sign Bernard Berran to be our number 2 receiver
3. Sign Terrell Suggs to be our DE
4. Trade away our 1st 2nd 3rd to however it takes to get Glenn Dorsey to be our DT opposite Griffin
5. SIGN ASANTE SAMUELS!

With the 10th pick the Redskins select Quentin Groves.

We have the 21st pick. Are you suggesting that we trade up? I would think that our goal would be to keep as many draft picks as possible and not use them to trade up.
DT Montgomery - 2nd year (will get better)
DT Griffin - is 31 (cut him)
DT Alexander, Golston - 2nd yr (love Alexander's strength and Golston's getting better)

I agree that Montgomery is getting better. Golston and Alexander are not starting caliber players. Our dline needs to get better. So if we cut Griffin we need to add another playmaker. Look at the teams still left in the playoffs and defensively all of them have very good defensive lines. Our is not very good right now and cutting Griffin and going with Montgomery/Golston/Alexander at DT isn't going to improve it.

LB - We're pretty set here for next year except for some depth
LB Washington - 31 - (need to replace him in the draft in 09)
LB McIntosh - should be a star
LB Fletcher - Still has a couple yrs left in him
LB Blades - spitting image of Fletcher...hopefully

Our linebacking situation all depends on Rocky's health. Chances of him being 100% for the start of the season, let alone at any point next season are slim. We need to use a draft pick to get younger here. We are set in the middle with Fletcher and Blades, but if Rocky isn't healthy we are looking at Marcus and Godfrey (if he returns)/Campbell starting. That would be an extraordinarily old linebacking corps. Perhaps that is why there are rumors floating around that we are going to go after Briggs (bad idea).

Cb is the position that worries me the most for next season. Springs' future is uncertain, Smoot had trouble staying healthy, and Rodger is in the same boat as Rocky because of his knee injury. Rodgers wasn't fast to begin so if he isn't 100% that could be trouble. Drafting a cb is nice, but it is a hard position to draft because it is difficult to predict how a cb will transition from college to the NFL (much more difficult than a positon like safety or linebacker). So that means we will likely have to address cb in free agency.

S Landry - is a stud...second coming?

Landry is awesome!

O Line - One of the best in the business...when healthy and Heyer was a great pickup. How about Adam Kraus in the 3rd? 320 lb G

On paper they are very good. But what is troubling here is the age of the starters. Every single projected starter is well over 30. Yes there have been fuke injuries and I wouldn't say that any of our starters are injury prone, but considering the age along the line, it probably isn't realistic to expect the entire group to stay healthy for any entire season. Heyer showed some real promise but I think that he is a few years away from being a full time starter. You cant just throw him out there for a full season and waste Cooley or CP helping him block a lot of the time.

We need to spend a couple of draft picks on the line to get younger and to have eventual replacements.

I agree with you assessment, except that you forgot about Bug Eyes (Caldwell). He did a very good job the last month or so of the season and I would like to see him as our #4 next season. I also think that Moss can still be a #1 provided that we add another playmaker to be the #2, preferably a receiver with size. We can't keep throwing out Moss and ARE as our two starters.

If there aren't any defensive ends left when we pick at #21 I would love to see us draft either Malcolm Kelly or Limus Sweed.

QB - We're set at starter and backup - need a draft pick.
Campbell - Will be a star
Collins - re-sign him
Brunell - Cut him

I agree. Draft or sign a young qb to be third string that can be groomed to eventually be the backup or a starter. But do it intelligently. Don't blow a draft pick on a guy like Jared Palmer who would likely have still been available to sign after the draft.

RB Cartright - Great special teams player

I really hope that we can resign Rock. He has done a tremendous job as our kick returner and is also a great locker room guy.

RB Sellers - is 32 (Getting old but we need one more yr out of him although I like Alexander here as well)

I like Sellers a lot, but the team needs to be a little smarter in the way it uses him. If we are going to hand him the ball in short yardage then line him up deep in the backfield like the Bucs used to do with Alstott. Don't keep handing him the ball on 3rd or 4th and short out of the fb spot. It just doesn't work often enough. Also, stop passing the ball to him so much. He doesn't have good hands. Throw it to him in the red zone ocassionally like we did in 2005 but dont use him on fb screens or throw the ball to him in the flat. Let him do his thing and blow people up for CP and Betts.

Guys, we have a 6'5" WR signed to a 3 yr contract in Mix. Let's give him a chance. I think with that, this year could be shored up. We need a younger 2nd TE in the next 2-3 years IMO. Cooley's da man, but he needs blocking TE in there.

RB is pretty set with CP/Betts. If Rock leaves, we have Mason who was impressive and only need to worry about ST

O-Line needs to start rebuilding. It's viable, but old.

D-Line needs to rebuild with strength. Daniels is good as long as he's healthy....but he's never healthy. Griifins' good if he's healthy, but he's not healthy much.

LB How can you say Washington (31) needs to be replaced next year and Fletcher (34) has a few more years in him? Doesn't make sense. I think Rocky's going to be a liability and 1/2 the shelf life of a normal LB. Bad knees.

Secondary had a good base. Landry can play the same style as ST, so I think we stay with what he have plan wise. Springs has a year or 2 left I think. Can't convert him to free safety, see Landry comment. Rogers I give one more chance to, but still need ot get ahold of quality CB whether it be FA or draft. Doughty I think can produce; let's give him a chance this coming year.

"Many within the team" believe CB Shawn Springs and WR Brandon Lloyd won't be back with the Redskins in 2008, according to the Washington Post.

Lloyd's release is almost a given, though it may not happen until his $1.8 million roster bonus comes due July 1. Springs had a strong year, and with Carlos Rogers unlikely for training camp, it will be a surprise if he's let go.

I see us getting rid of a lot of our older Defensive players...

I wouldn't let Springs go. He was playing very well at the end of the year. Griffin and Daniels showed me nothing. They are spent.

Awwww man.I have to say these 3 things about them.

1)Shawn Springs:Hes been our best CB for 4 years now and during the last 4 games,he has stepped up.But hes time has come and hes always injured and we have to move on.We could draft a CB or get one out of FA but Springs is taking alot of cap.

Daniels:You helped alot in 05.And in 06 helped during the Panthers-Jags game. And this year you made some plays. But big guy your 35 taking alot of cap,and is always injured. So hit the rode jack.

Griffin:You did excellent in 04-05-07 but you gotta go too.Take alot of cap.You barely get to the QB like you use too and your getting old.But your a good runs stopper so I could probably re-think what i said.

Other probables leaving?.

Pralou:LOL get him out of here

Brunell=Thankes for the 05 fantastic year but your old and have to go.

Jansen:You get injured easily ,and your getting old Im sorry.I would love to keep you but we skins gotta get younger.

I agree with your assessments. But their is no way Jansen is gonna get let go if he is healthy and he is not that old. But he needs to get back to his pro bowl level.

I'm not convenced Springs needs to go.

Last year, I thought he needed to go because he wouldn't take a pay cut after missing almost the entire season. But, then the season started and he has had a great season proveing he was worth the money this year. And he hasn't been hurt this year, other than small things.

And Jansen, well I feel about the same this year about him as I did Springs last year. He's been hurt, his cap is high. And at the begining of the season he was getting beat a lot it seemed. Every other play he was on the ground. So, if he comes back next year he has a lot of proving himself to me. Sure, he was in the pro bowl. But he hasn't been lately.

Mix is an intriguing player no doubt about it. But we don't just need a big body. We need a bigger receiver that can step in a be a starter. ARE needs to be in the slot, not starting as our #2. We can't keep running Moss and ARE out there as our starters.

A couple of thoughts here. Marcus hasn't played a full season since 2005. He has had some injuries and doesn't appear to be the same player that he used to be. Most telling, however, is that fact that his numbers have declined every season since 2004. That is very concerning and at the age of 31 it is very unlikely that he is going to revert back to playmaker that he was in 2004/2005.

London Fletcher, even though he is older, has never missed an NFL game during his 10 year career. More importantly, his numbers have stayed constant since 2000. So whereas Washington's numbers have been declining, Fletcher's numbers are still at the same level as they have always been. The numbers aside, Fletcher also looks very much like the player that he was earlier in his career. He is in great shape and has shown no signs of slowing down. The same can't be said for Marcus.

You must be talking about the Dolphins game, because...that's the only game he played. I don't remember him getting beat a lot in that game?

Well he certainly was on the ground on one play I can remember. The one that put

So, if he comes back next year he has a lot of proving himself to me. Sure, he was in the pro bowl. But he hasn't been lately.

AFAIK he's never been in the Pro Bowl.

I remember seeing Jansen have a hard time. And I remember someone on the board said it.

As far as the Pro Bowl goes, I didn't know if he went to the PB, Just the last post said "Pro Bowl Level" So I should have said Pro Bowl Level.

I didn't know we had 16 FAs this year. Wow, thats more than I had thought.
Rock needs to be resigned.
As well as Albright.
Fabini formerly known as False Starter Fabini has improved, and is a fine backup IMO.
And Frost, Well his punts aren't as strong as some others (18th) But I love it when he makes a tackle so we should resign him.
I think we should resign Godfrey.
Kozlowski knocking out an Eagle is enough to resign him in my book.
Prioleau has his ups and downs.
And I would like to see more of Nemo. And who is the FB we signed early in camp this year after Nemo went on IR? Is he still on the team?

That was Fred Beasely & he was released from the practice squad mid season.
On the topic of this thread, Loyd & Macklin are the 1st 2 I would cut. Brunell also. I don't think Fabini is a good fit. He is better at OT than OG. We have Heyer as a backup OT. We need a good back up OG

its not so much the sacks that are the big deal. its the complete lack of any kind of pass rush. QB's have all day long to stand in the pocket and pick us apart.
