While I would like very much to agree, I cannot.

I do know that Joe's path with us up to now has taken us to recover from the ashes and the mess that he received when he came here. I believe that there is a FAIR amount of speculation based on what we know about the influence of Joe on the Danny in the future.

To me, it is very simple: If Joe and the Danny had wanted this influence to be decisive, all they had to do was to keep Joe as President of the Team. They did not select to do that. This is a mistake on one or both parties if they wanted to make sure that Joe had a REAL say on things to be done. It was not the case.

All we can do now is SPECULATE that the relationship stays strong and the Danny obeys somebody who is NOT a real part of the Front Office.

I will disagree with you about the timing for a GM. I think we need him NOW. Take Polian from the Colts ASAP, PLEASE. Please do not allow Danny and Vinny return to their old ways to play "smart personnel decisions" 8-[

Danny out of control and his sidekick Vinny is the worst possible combination designed to undo the good work and chemistry developed over the last four years.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

RiC - I do agree with you to a large degree.

Based off of what Dan and Joe said yesterday, I believe Dan lobbied extremely hard for Gibbs to remain as team president. Gibbs declined the "title" of president, but it's obvious, to me anyway, he will still be performing those duties, but from an advisory position. That's why I'm okay with it for one more year. After the stability has been established with the new coach next year, bring in a GM for 2009. In my opinion, hiring a GM right now will stir things up too much. And besides, we already know Dan isn't planning to do that this year, which I know you disagree with.

That is also my concern RiC - I think the players and coaches do not need very much at all - we need a coach but that will most likely be Williams and I'm sure we will see some tweaking - we seem to have too many coaches but that will not be a factor here, in my opinion

We need to do a better job managing this team - that fact has been true for quite a while - we really should get in a GM and get rid of Cerrato but the problem is how do we bring in someone to manage and then say - you have to start off with these coaches and this FO?

Snyder and Gibbs are not going to make many changes right now - Snyder has learn't but he is still not understanding or seeing how badly Cerrato and his bunch are doing

We can only hope that we get a GM sooner rather than later - I will be surprised if Snyder sees the wisdom of that in the near term.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Greg Williams, hands down. Al is up in the booth, so he doesn't have to go and even think about Offense, he's free to do his best, which means controlling our animals on Defense..... But, if he was the heir-apparent, then why isn't he named as our coach yet. He always said that he loved what he was doing, and he loved who he was doing it with... Well ST has moved on to God's team and Gibbs has gone to spend more time with his fam.... So is this it, is this the end of this staff/era? Will he be wearing aqua next year???? I hope not.

Because by league rules theres a process in which each NFL team has to follow to hire a coach. A certain amount of people have to be interviewed along with a certain amount of minority coaches. My opinion is that Greg Williams is pretty much the next head coach but before he is named the skins front office has to go through a dog and pony show before they can publicly announce him as the coach.

I think Williams is the unofficial choice, but we can't announce it thanks to the Looney Rooney's and their feel-good rule.

It makes the most sense.

I didn't like the idea at first, but it's growing on me.

Williams has the respect of the players. Saunders calls all of the offensive plays, Williams still runs his defense. The only difference would be that Saunders wouldn't have to defer to a three time Super-Bowl winner, and could call ALL the plays (including the Red-Zone).

I honestly believe that's what Joe was trying to set up in the first place. I think Joe had his escape planned out two years ago.

If we were to get Grimm, I'd prefer him to take on Buges' role and manage the O-line, then get into the HC job.

Cowher...not a chance. Not even remotely.

Snyder needs a GM! And needs to get out of the way. But he won't. I don't think Williams is a "sexy" enough coach...he'll go outside the current staff for a coach.

Because they have to go through the hiring process to avoid being fined for an infraction of the Rooney rule. GW will be our next coach, it just won't be official for another week or two.

Jason Campbell was just on NFL Live and gave his support for Gregg Williams and the importance of continuity. Coming from the starting QB and an offensive player, I think that speaks volumes.

My understanding of the Rooney Rule is that it does not apply if the team promotes from within.

But if they do any outside interviewing they must apply the rule.

Rooney Rule
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The Rooney Rule requires National Football League teams to interview minority candidates for a head coaching opportunity. The rule is named for Dan Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the chairman of the league's diversity committee, and is often cited as an example of affirmative action.

In 2003, the NFL fined the Detroit Lions $200,000 for failure to interview minority candidates for the team's vacant head coaching job. After Marty Mornhinweg was fired, the Lions immediately hired former San Francisco 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci to replace him without interviewing any other candidates. The Lions claimed they attempted to interview other candidates but that the minority candidates withdrew from interviews, believing Mariucci's hiring was inevitable.

Since the Rooney Rule was established, several NFL franchises have hired minority head coaches (including the Steelers themselves, who hired Mike Tomlin before their 2007 season), although the policy is still debated. No team has stated whether the Rooney Rule contributed to the hiring of a minority.

However, an exception would be when a team makes a commitment to promote one of its assistants.

Whoa, he appears to be right here.

I never actually READ anything about the rule, but after 30 seconds of research the concensus is that the team can skip the interview process "if it has made a commitment to promote from within."

If Williams were the solid candidate, than the Rooney Rule wouldn't apply since he was all but promised the job, if Gibbs ever left, a few years ago (I know everyone's saying the $1Mil bonus doesn't exist, but I know what I heard).

So now I'm worried about why Williams hasn't been named yet... :-s

I think that GW should be the HC here because despite how Joe did as HC in this stint, he (Joe) stablized this organization. The Redskins could actually fufill the Rooney Rule requirements by throwing Greg Blache a bone during this process but ultimately hire GW.

I applaud the Rooney Rule and it was long overdue but in this instance with the chemistry that this team has developed and what they have been through with the injuries and losing Sean, they should keep everything in place and promote Williams. If this team was garbage and needed drastic changes, I'd say open it up for whomever to coach this team next year but this is a unique situation with this team that no other team in a long, long time had to deal with.

Now, I will say this though. Snyder needs to hire a football guy at GM and go play raquetball with Vinny. Peter King, who I think is a pompeus blowhard that don't know jack did finally make a valid point today on Coach Thompson's show when he said that Snyder show really look at how NE with Belicheck and Pioli, built that team into the franchise that it is now. They took a step back and stopped going after the "high price" guys and used the draft and picked up good free agents that stepped up and didn't cost much. Right now, we are close to $20 million over the cap going into next year with the projected cap number.

We go ahead and promote GW; keep Al and let him do his thing; get a real GM; get under the cap and move forward with NE's model. We've got a good core of players now that we can make a run for the next two years at least before we may have to start back at square one. But why not start that ball rolling now by hiring a GM and laying down that philosophy?? It can be done...

Everyone is worried about this signing setting JC back in his progress, but if he keeps Al Saunders as an OC than I would be ecstatic. GW is a good guy but get real, IF we have a shot at a proven winner than we gotta jump on it. Cowher is young enough to be here for a while and he is a winner

This commentary is right on. If Cower comes in, it'd be wise to keep some continuity on offense, especially if we're banking on Jason Campbell. In any event, it's an effective offense. I'm not sold on JC so I think we need QB insurance, we need another top notch WR and must rebuild the O-line.

What people may be overlooking when it comes to Cower is that players around the league want to play for a guy like him. As much as I like Greg Williams's defensive strategies, I'm not sure he has the same appeal to most NFL players around the league. The ability to attract the best players to play for the Skins cannot be understated.

I thought about that too. Before I looked into the Rooney Rule, I was thinking, why not just interview Earnest Byner or Stan Hixon, make a quick call to Brian Billick (probably not even a long distance call) and go ahead and announce Williams.

Assuming they've already decided on Williams, they probably will still wait some time before the announcement. I'm sure they'll still want to fulfill their due diligence responsibilities so the media and pricks like Fat Lenny don't jump all over them for coming to a quick decision without the due diligence process.

What are you talking about??? Williams instantly turned us into a great defensive team. Look at the '04 stats compared with '03! As I recall he was never under Joe Gibbs in Tennessee.

Danny you say you learned patients from Gibbs...Lets see you ezercise some by giving GW a three year deal and letting him coach the full three years. if he doesn't produce than you can blow it up. He's been loyal and deserves the opportunity.
