When the Lions picked Marriucci <sp> from SF, they failed to go through the process, even though they knew they wanted him, and had already decided to hire him. If I recall correctly they were fined, admonished by the league, and trashed by the press, all because they didn't want to waste another coach's time.

I don't know if they suffered any other penalties (loss of draft picks, etc) but I'm sure if we did it, the league would punish us to the full extent since it's pretty obvious they don't like us.
Yes, and you also have to interview a minority fo tho position.

What jobs were Williams in serious consideration to get? Not Miami - that's going to go to someone who Parcells can control. Not Baltimore - they're probably looking for an offensive guy, since that was their problem during the Billick era. Even if JG had stayed, I don't see Williams leaving.

No matter who the HC (except Cower) is next season, prepare yourself for years of futility and no more playoff appearances this decade.

The Skins will yet again be the laughing stock of the NFL.

I that may just be an emotional rant, but it is how I feal right now!

This decision was made within the last few hours after the game in Seattle.

Joe had not given indications to close friends and players that he would leave. In fact, the comment that I got from somebody close to him was that he saw this job as a mission in life. That is why I wrote that I was SURE that he would stay.

Something happened between Seattle to DC to North Carolina.

The part that ASTONISHES me is that he would step down as President of the Skins. Something is REALLY wrong here.

I will comment on further after the Press Conference. I could not have received more difficult news from the Skins this year on so many levels.

God bless you Joe. You will always be an example to me winning and losing but always fighting.

Atlanta for one. And you have no idea that Baltimore is looking for an OC, or that Parcells doesn't think GW wouldn't make a fine coach for the Fish. The point is, that GW is using the threat of him leaving as leverage to make the Danny speed up the transition of power from Joe.

Just a couple of random thoughts:

1: Barring a Belicheck-resignation or something of equal magnitude, this should be a three-horse race between Williams, Cowher and Grimm. I think all three would be smart choices.

2: I don't care for the rule, but the Redskins ought to interview a minority candadite just to avoid the wrath of the league, as long as they make their intentions clear to the candadite. The interview itself is worthwhile to a lot of young assistants, and if he does well, the word of mouth will help. Jerry Gray might be candadite for that token interview.

3: Gibbs II was a dissapointment overall, but he was still the most successful coach we've had since Gibbs I. Two playoff trips in three years feels like a dynasty after the futilty we've had to suffer through.

4: The Redskins need a new personnel guy - Cerrato/Snyder by themselves aren't going to cut it. It's too bad Gibbs isn't staying on in some capactiy, because he's done a pretty good job identifiying talent. I'd say the biggest need by far will be the secondary, which is amazing considering all the draft picks and free agent money we've invested there over the past few years.

5: I hope Saunders stays, because I think changing coordinators again can only hurt Campbell.

6: It's a bittersweet day. I hate to see Gibbs leave, but I'm glad he got to go out on a relativley high note, and I think the Redskins have plenty of good coaching options for the future. It's going to be hard to screw that up.
I'm bored, I'm broke, and I'm back.

I regret that, on the most basic of levels, yet another tremor in the nine years of complete instability of this franchise.

There's been a plethora of adjectives to describe what's happened in that time -- up, down, good, bad, fiscally irresponsible, fiscally restrained, etc. -- but the biggest one has been absent throughout: STABLE.

Why do people assume a new coach is automatically going to blow up the team and start over? Did Phillips blow up the 'boys and start over? Did Norv blow up the Chargers and start over? Any smart coach is going to come in and try to build on what we currently have, not cut the whole roster and 'start from scratch'.

I didn't say that would happen for sure. I'm just saying that is one thing that could very easy happen. And Im saying that I don't want it to happen. If don't then great. I didn't say that was in stone and will happen.

How bout them rolly eyes.

I would want someone to build off of what we have like Phillips did over in Dallas. Didn't the Tuna have a hand in picking Phillips. From what I've seen everything right down to the play calling has been the same.

Oops, forgot the Atlanta job was even open! But was GW even contacted about that job? I think people here are way overestimating GW's appeal as a HC candidate. Sure, he's shown he should be considered as a HC candidate somewhere, but he was already a HC once, and it's not like he won a SB that time. I don't think Danny would push aside JG just to keep GW happy.

Joe is a very tough and demanding man on himself. If he feels that hs duty is first and foremost with his family, that's it. He will always place family above all other things.

He obviously feels that he did not do the best job he could have. He obviously feels that somebody else should take over from him as a coach.

The part that DRIVES ME CRAZY is the announcement that he will leave as Team's President. That I do not understand AT ALL. Something happened between him and Danny. Obviously a work arrangement could not be worked out to the satisfaction of both.

Team adviser? Who the hell are they KIDDING??? !!!

One thing is for sure, this STUPID Danny better choose the right man for the HC job -and- a great GM or else he will lose millions of dollars and be run out of town. I will lead the bandwagon to get him outta DC.

Gibbs is going to retain a role with the team, what that means obviously remains to be seen:

Gibbs, who resigns with one year remaining on his contract, will remain part of the Redskins family and serve as a special advisor to owner Daniel M. Snyder.

Nothing's in stone in this league. Even if Gibbs had stayed, there's no guarantee we'd have been better next year. 2005 (10-6) was followed by 2006 (5-11). Teams quickly rise and just as quickly fall all the time. Look at the Saints - some 'experts' even picked them for the SB this year, after last year's great run, but they didn't even make the playoffs this year! People can make of this what they will, but I'm not any more pessimistic about our chances next year now than I was before I heard JG was leaving. The new coach could easily do as well or better next year.

If Bill Cowher isnt the top candidate, I personally don't want GW as head coach, He's a DC not a HC, his days up here in Buffalo were nothing special, I say lets bring back a TRUE REDSKIN in Russ Grimm, lets give him a shot. My 2 cents

So, all of those who wanted Joe out of the HC position got their wish. I hope you guys are right. I, on the other hand, will seriously look at the choices to be made within the next few weeks before I decide that I have any interest in the NFL, let alone the Washington Redskins and even my participation this board. I'm guessing that Joe made that decision in the interests of continuity being best for the team, and if he was already going to make the move next year anyway, no reason to let his pride get in the way of a smooth transition.

What worries me is that nobody aside from Gibbs has the ability to tell Danny to shutup and leave. Has Danny learned that he can't fire players behind the coaches back? I sincerely hope so.

It's Gregg Williams folks, he's earned it. Gibbs knows whats best, he came back and put us in the playoffs twice and built a roster worthy of the Redskins.

That is the million dollar question. Has The Danny learned enough from Gibbs to be a successful owner? I have some doubts.
