Greg Williams might interview as Dolphins head coach?

Post by por-tiz2skins »

According to the Washington Post’s Jason La Canfora, FOXSports’ Jay Glazer is reporting that Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is a candidate for the Dolphins job. Still, no one’s thinking that Tony Sparano isn’t Bill Parcells‘ top choice, but it’s apparently not a done deal either. (Or maybe it is and the Tuna has just outsmarted us all.)

Before coming to Washington, Williams was the Bills’ head coach for three unremarkable seasons, and his name pops up this time of year for various coaching vacancies. But there’s no guarantee he’s keen on leaving the ‘Skins:

Williams has gone out of his way let everyone out here know over the years how much he loves doing this job, how much he loves Joe Gibbs and he is obviously seen as a primo candidate to replace Joe Gibbs when that day comes. His children are in high school here and thriving and Williams is not a guy who wants to spread himself around and interview all over the place.

You’d have to think there’s virtually no chance of Williams getting the Miami gig, what with Parcells wanting “his people”. But, hell, nobody figured Mike Tomlin had a shot with the Steelers last year either. Stranger things have happen.

Well,if he leaves than thats not good.He had up and down days this year but other than that our D was solid.I would love to see him back next year.

What scares me is if the Ravens interview him. He has clearly stated that he doesn't want to leave the area....but if he coached in Balt. he wouldn't have to. I'd hate to see the Ravens get him. I don't think it will happen though. I think that he will stay with Gibbs.

I think Gregg has learned quite a bit from his first time failure as a head coach in buffalo. props to him if he decides interviews and it offered the miami job. after all, he isn't promised the head coaching job here. also, i think we have some capable assistants that could step in for him. (blache and olvidotti sp?)
head coaching jobs don't come to individuals often so if they call he should at least talk to them

Candidates are often interviewed in primary hopes of getting relevant information about personnel and schemes (in this case, AFC East). Parcels and company are shrewd, and certainly not above such pretense. It's been four years since Williams coached in the Dolphin's division, but he scouted and played against those teams this year.

So ... if true, this may be all window dressing.

Honestly I would hate to see him go. Fact is if he desires to be head coach and it is his dream? Who are we to stop him?

I like Monte Kiffin a whole lot.

I wonder why he hasnt been considered for head coaching positions? Who knows it may be his year? Or maybe Parcells will hire him? Anything is possible at this point.

I think Monte Kiffin is past the point of being a head coach in the NFL. if i remember correctly, he has to be in his upper seventies or early eighties.

I don't think that Greg Williams is a head coach, but only a defensive coordinator.

If we lost him, which I doubt, I want Ron Rivera.

My opinion is this. First, we've heard Gregg state numerous times that he likes where he's at and his kids finishing school in the same place is paramount. I also believe he is dedicated to Gibbs and Snyder.

Sure, he may interview elsewhere, but my money is on him staying right here. He already makes a head coaches salary, so money can't be the motivation. I also believe the current coaches feel they are close to having a championship team and will all commit to see it through. It's my belief the entire coaching staff stays in place and that's what we need right now. We've also heard from the players themselves, that they've bought into both the offensive and defensive systems. This team will still fight for Sean Taylor.

I wouldn't be surprised if Al Saunders gets some looks from other teams as well. There are going to be many vacancies. But I believe Gibbs, Saunders and Williams will stay, for at least one more year.

They are close with this team. Why would Gregg want to take over a 1-15 Miami team with an aging defense. Their defense was not very good this year and will need a lot of youth brought in. Gregg has got our defense pretty close to where he wants it, why leave that? A stud pass rusher, a few more for d-line depth, possibly a safety or a defensive back... and we're looking pretty good for 2008.

Gregg will stay, bet on it.

My 2 cents

Parcells has ALWAYS been known to have HIS people follow him. He works that way. I do not care who the Fins interview. Ah! and there will be a an African American interviewed as well. You can count on that even if it is the most hypocritical and bureaucratic step Miami feels compelled to fulfill.

The job goes to a former Parcells employee. Any bets on that?

Maybe because hypocrisy needs to be denounced with a mix of sarcasm, irony and hidden anger.

I agree with you here. The forced interview of a coach based on his race is stupid. 9 times out of 10, the team already knows who it wants to hire, so the interview is a waste of time for both the applicant, and the team. It's a "feel good" rule to make it look like the league is doing something to promote diversity among coaches.

While this rule falls just short of affirmative action, it has the same failings that the law did in California. All it does is create resentment from both the coaching prospects who have to waste their time being the "token" interviewee for several teams each year, and the teams themselves who are forced to waste that applicant's time knowing they already plan to hire someone else.

As for Parcells hiring a former employee; That doesn't really narrow the field down much considering he's been with, what, four different teams in the last 30 years? He's probably worked with half the league's coaches, and office staff by now!

I don't think Williams is going anywhere. If you were a failure as a HC, but a feared as a DC, why change up what's working for something that already hasn't worked for you in the past? Especially to work under someone as difficult as Parcells?

I would love it if Parcells comes back to coaching - he has already shown he can't anymore and this would be even more embarrassing - Parcells realizes his best job in the NFL now is just exactly what he is doing - he cannot compete as a coach anymore
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
