Is Brunell expendable now?

Post by rick301 »

Seeing how well Todd is playing, and thinking ahead to the off season (starting in February) we should keep TC (assuming we can come to terms with him) and of course JC, but do we keep MB or look for a younger vet or a rookie project?

Thoughts?

He's always been expendable to me, it's just that financially though, I just don't know.

I don't think that we will be able to afford him. Somehow he will get starter money and will get to start somewhere like Chicago, Minnesota, or Atlanta. I would like to keep him b/c he is a great insurance policy.

ROTFALMAO Brunell? ROTFALMAO - you have to be kidding me - if I lived out there, I would move. That air has to be bad for you if it affects you like that.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I was referring to a previous quote about Collins not Brunell. Come on.

Anyone who thinks we aren't in great shape having Brunnel on the bench is wayyy wrong. If Todd gets hurt and JC isn't ready, who would you rather have as your backup? Brunnel or any of the following:

1) Hollenbach,
2) Casey Weldon; or
3) Gib whatever his name was...??

We're really lucky to have Brunnel..he's healthy, not beaten up and would be ready to come in and help us win a playoff game. What team could go to their 3rd QB and have that kind of quality ready to go? I can't think of many teams who could even go to their #2 and continue winning. Brad Johnson in Dallas? Aaron Rodgers in GB? Jim Sorgi in Indy? Matt Cassell in NE? Seneca Wallace in Seattle? Batch in Pitts? These are all #2's -- just imagine who their #3's are....

Quit busting on Brunnel, he's a super #3! I'd argue the best in the NFL.

I think you and I may be on different pages. I don't think we are talking about getting rid of Brunell tomorrow, but for next season. That's what I was thinking anyway.

We can't get rid of Brunell b/c Collins will get a well deserved Starting QB job. I think he should go to Minnesota it will best suit him, great running game and he can make managable throws and not turn it over. Perfect. Lets say he goes to Chicago no talent on offense, he is forced to make throws therefore he becomes the QB he was in Buffalo 10 years ago. If he's smart he'll go somewhere that doesn't need him as the center piece but only as a game manager.

I disagree....I think a LOT of Todd's success is due to his familiarity with Saunder's system. I don't see him going anywhere.

Ideal is we keep JC and TC and dump Brunell for a project. But...

- Projects worth being projects are not so easy to come by

- TC may be pricing himself out of our range.

I hope we can swing that, but no way we should kill our cap to do it. TC is solid, but he's not a great talent, he's a solid QB leading a talented team coming together at the right time. To somehow say he's the CAUSE of this is absurd. Clearly he's PART of those deserving credit though.

I agree with Kazoo. The Redskins would be best off with Jason, Todd, and a long term project earning the league minimum. Brunell might be the best third string quarterback in the leagure right now, but he is also the most expensive. That is not good luck. That is a blundered personnel decision.

Todd is not going to be eager to leave. He has invested too much time learning this system. Knowing the system is the key to his success, and he knows that.

The key question is the terms on which the Redskins would keep him. Would he keep the starting job? Would he have the right to compete for the starting job? I don't think we can answer those questions yet until we see how far he can take us. If he takes us to the Super Bowl, I say we give him starter money and let him keep the job as long as he is delivering these kind of results.

Another simple answer; Don't get rid of Brunell at all, he knows the system and would fit right in with Gibbs coaching mentality if something was to happen to our other QBs. End of discussion.

Is Brunell expendable? Yes. Assuming Collins can be re-signed.

I agree - he is going to get a decent paycheck next year (deservedly so) and if he is smart he will either do that here or somewhere with a very familiar type of offense - the teams that really need a QB would be making a big mistake IMO if they think it's the player and don't ensure that he has a system that suits his abilities.

But that is a very common mistake in the NFL and we have seen it first hand here. Even Gibbs is "reported" to have said that they all thought that Collins' success at running the team earlier this year was more due to the lack of quality defenses he was facing than his abilities and familiarity with Saunders/Gibbs offense. Now, from Gibbs, that is a little surprising BUT we have made a lot of mistakes with players before and other teams do that also. It's like these guys never wake up to the fact that players play better when they make other players around them (and themselves) play better - everyone at this level is talented.

Better teamwork always beat better talented teams when that talent does not suit the game planning.

As far as Brunell is concerned - I also hope he is not here next year - BUT I also hope he leaves with a Super Bowl ring - now that would make me happy and I hope it makes a lot of Brunell haters a little uncomfortable. Not the Super Bowl ring but the fact that Brunell got a Super Bowl ring - no matter how you want to spin it - he is a part of the magic

I hope we can keep Collins. He has certainly been the catalyst to this offense.
Collins is MVP for the season.

Yeah, just like the same way that McCardell got a ring with the skins the 1st year in the league. I mean honestly, who knew that he was on the skins with th elast SB win? And please, use integrity before hitting that reply button.

Whether Brunell gets a ring from being 3rd string and not taking a snap this year, how, exactly, is he 'part of the magic'?
...any given Sunday....

RIP #21 Sean Taylor. You will be loved and adored by Redskins fans forever!!!!!

like the ad says "easy" - Brunell is a part of the Washington Redskins team - they win as a team and they lose as a team - too many were hating on Brunell just because he was the QB - he is still a very important part of the team along with all the other players, coaches and other parts of the team

it would be great to win the Super Bowl but no single part of our team "deserves" it - the team is what is important.

IMO - the MVP this year will probably be Sean Taylor for providing the catalyst

Um, whatever your opinion of Mark, it's a stretch, at best, to say he's part of what has happened to the Redskins in any significant sense.

I'm only saying that Brunell is a part of the team and while I hope we never need to see him between the lines I always support whoever is under center for our team - I just think it would be great to win the Super Bowl this year and for Brunell to go out with a Super Bowl ring.

I think that Gibbs likes QBs that provide the type of toughness and leadership abilities that Brunell has and for some here to not just want him off the team for his play (understandable) but also advocated for him to be physically hurt, (even offering to pay for that to happen!) that to me is just very low.

I am not a Brunell fan, I would however like for him to leave here with a Super Bowl ring - he is a classy person and put up with a lot of hate while he was trying to help this team.

This is a sports site dude. We debate who should be on the team, who should play, who should coach. This is a diversion, we should be free to endlessly argue all those things. Now when we want someone to sit because he sucks or we want to cut him because we have 2 grizzled vets and only need one it's HATE? Give me a break.
