Reche Caldwell

Post by Skinsfan55 »

I really like Reche Caldwell.

A lot of people have said, and I agree with them, that receivers generally take a couple years to mature and come into their own. If we understand this to be true (with some exceptions) then we can draft a defensive lineman or something else we need on this team and leave a WR pick for later.

The question is, is Reche Caldwell a starting option? He's about 6-0 210, former second round pick, and has a pretty good track record as a receiver. Here's his scouting report:

2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 63 | Key
Alert: None

Comment: A pro with 61 receptions and four touchdowns. He was acquired from the Chargers in 2006 where he was the second or third option and had a tough time staying healthy. After Tom Brady tried to find a new "go to guy" early in the season, Caldwell became his main target as he lead the team in receptions and touchdowns. He has decent push off the line and is a solid route runner but is not explosive and has questionable pure speed to stretch deep zones. He is an improved route runner. Caldwell is effective to get in and out of his stems and gets his head around quickly to make the timely reception. He has had some decent long receptions but is not a strong run after the catch receiver. He is not elusive and has average burst in the open field. He has good hands, can extend and make the tough reception. He has courage in traffic and will compete when the ball goes up. Caldwell should be a more physical blocker for his size but is inconsistent with his effort. It will be interesting to see how much he will touch the ball in 2007 with the new off season acquisitions.

IMO that's probably fair, he's done pretty well with us too. Is he better than Lloyd? Does he come back next season?

Yea I think he is a solid possession guy. I still think they need a possession/stretch guy, so that moss can be the stretch guy he is intended to be. Seeing how T.O. affects the cowboys shows me that the skins need a premier receiver.

How many premier guys are there though? Five? Ten?

With a smart QB, and a decent running game we can be a Superbowl team with a competent receiving corps.

This guy basically catches everything thrown at him and has been solid whenever called upon all year. I think he is clearly starter material.

yeah, i would like to know the percentage of his catches this year that have given the Redskins first downs... it seems that every ball he cathces is on 3rd and whatever, and he gets the first down... i think he actually sees the yellow line on the field when running routes...

Yea i agree, I would like to take a big possesion receiver though in the 1st but the only person that fits that is Limas Sweed and he wont be there when we pick. So i would say yea take a DE and go WR in another round

Caldwell is putting together a great story. The Skins are putting together an UNBELIEVABLE set of stories combined into one.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

I really like what Caldwell and McCardell have added to our receiving corps. What they've done as reserves is fine with me. I'm fine with Moss and Randle El as our starters.

I doubt McCardell will be back next year but I hope we keep him and Caldwell both on the roster.

We need to find a young taller type WR to replace McCardell. Reece absoutely deserves a chance to make this team next year.

OUr WR's for sure:

Moss
El
Thrash for ST
Reece

Oh, I forgot about Lloyd!!!

initial projections suggest he will be there. depending on juniors he could even be there in round two.

I'm not sure how much the Skins will be able to afford to release him (I'm not completely sure how much his cap number is) but I'd rather they do that then let McCardell go. I think he has a little bit left in the tank.

I don't mind reminding you that there were more than a few making the same kind of statements about Todd Collins 18 months ago...

What about this guy Mix or Nix? He's looked really good on ST - how is he is an actual WR? He looks absolutely huuuuge. Good hands? Smooth patterns?
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Roger that, but if I were coach and I'm asked to choose.....

Reche stays, and Keenan is out. IMHO

Stand pat with our receivers. They're a quality bunch. Let's draft a replacement for Daniels who can rush and stuff the run and spend the next three picks on quality linemen on both sides of the ball.

As anyone noticed that ARE is a much better receiver than he was and is improving. Also, has anyone noticed he's one of the NFL's worse kick returners. The guy either needs coaching up or needs to do as he's told. You can't juke your way to decent punt returns in the NFL; you've got to immediately committ downfield, hole or no hole. No hole opens up? Fine!
It will next time. Mitchell never waited.

Your point..... Get Mitchell onto the coaching staff and show ARE how to do this right....

I've heard Mitchell say many times that he wants to coach.

Campbell recommended we sign him. They played together at Auburn so I assume he's a decent receiver as well.

Heck, he may be our next James Thrash; special teams demon but can light up the Eagles when thrown to.

Yeah, I agree, Jake. I'll bet they keep Mix, which is fine with me. I'd like to see him get some looks on offense though.

Reche has been a nice addition. He brings a solid game to the receiving corps. Seemed like it took him a while to actually see the field, but it now appears he's grasped a good portion of the offense and is making an impact. I'm quite sure we'll see more of him.

A good possession receiver, in my opinion, is not graded on how well he catches the ball or how good his hands are. A good possession receiver is the guy who can find the openings or voids in the defensive secondary. Reche is very good at that. He became Tom Brady's primary target for that very reason. And as we've all recently witnessed, he's given Collins a nice target to throw to.

Hopefully Mix is coming along in a similar fashion. Giants fans loved Mix, and evidently, Campbell does as well. Mix has been great on 'teams' and seems to have solid receiving skills as well, which makes him a Gibbs kind of player. I'm pulling for both Reche and Mix.
