Love Halo 3... Love it to death...

So I finally signed on to Xbox Live and my oh my I wasn't prepared for it. I'm not naive in any way but dang if I didn't get called every name in the book. WOW. People are absolutely crazy... I signed into the Recreation portion of Live figuring I could get my feet wet first ( I only get to play maybe 2-3 hours a week) and I just wasn't prepared for how good and down right nasty everyone is!!! haha

I would think grown adults could find something more constructive to do with their time than to play fantasy war hero. Having served 25 years in the military, I can state there is nothing glorious about war, whether actual or imaginary.

On the other hand, to each his or her own. If becoming an expert at pressing game control buttons floats your boat then who am I to judge?

I merely posted an opinion. It is beyond pathetic that the best thing a grown adult can find as recreation is the same thing grade school children find as recreation. A large number of people need to grow up. No wonder this country is going to hell in a handcart. Life stops to play a meaningless video game. It is nice to know that my children would rather be reading a book than wasting their time with garbage like this. Another Opinion. I'm full of them today. Good Luck with your video game. Before you call the kettle black... Take a look at yourself. You have over 700 posts in 1 month my friend. Some people play video games for recreation, while obviously you like to post on wonderful message boards such as this. It's quite hypocritical for you to lash out wouldn't you say?

You also stated "who am I to judge?" ... How about you follow the question you ask. Why did you even look in on this thread? It's titled "Halo 3"... not "contructive ways to use your time." If you or your children have better ways to fill your time, then don't post in a thread that your don't agree with. Is that constructively filling your time?

I'm sure you'll come back with some retort and that's fine but I'm done bantering with you because I made my point and I'm sure others will see my point and agree you don't have much of a leg to stand on.

Follow your own question you posed and don't judge, everyone would get along much better. Can't we agree on that?

I'm not into video games, but couldn't people say that about following other people play sports (like football)? What about chasing a little ball around a golf course or even going to a movie, isn't there always something more "productive" to do? What is the point in life if everything you need to do is productive?

I don't get it, this is a serious question, why would it bother you that people play video games?

I left the door wide open for someone to explain why this game is so fascinating and perhaps convince other posters they might want to play it but no one has done so. Would anyone care to explain to those of us who do not play this game why it is so fascinating?

Lots of activities adults engage in on a frequent basis are rather questionable. Certainly things like drinking, drug use, etc., have a higher societal cost than playing video games. I suggest you find new activities to which you can direct your disdain.

First can you explain why a grown man would want to watch other grown men play football? Sit in the stands, watch on TV. In your world how is that productive? Why is that not "beyond pathetic?" Maybe with that demonstration on what is a worthwhile use of your leisure time your question can be answered.

And to be clear, I am saying they are both diversions, if they interest you that's fine. You're saying watching other people play football makes sense (or I assume you are since you post on THN) and video games make no sense. It is that apparent contradiction I fail to grasp.

I say to each his own. I don't care what someone else likes to do for recreation. I don't play halo 3 because I don't have an xbox 360. I am a PC gamer and I do play online games as well as offline. I think for me and just about everyone else, we see it as a challenge. I am pretty competitive so when I get to pawn somebody else playing the same game I get a sense of satisfaction.

I grew up playing video games. The sega master system is what introduced me to my life long hobby. I don't really care what anyone else thinks. For me, gaming helps me relax and escape "the real world" for a bit. We each have things we like to do so why bash on a person for doing what they enjoy?

I can't relate to the need to escape reality. I rather enjoy reality. I do, however, have four children who might actually play this game if they knew anything about it. Unfortunately, I get criticized for expressing an opinion and no response to a question directly related to the thread topic.

Halo 3 is just riding a big hype wave right now. There's nothing special or groundbreaking about it, at least IMHO. There are much better games out there, depending on what system you (or your kids) have. You should try some games with your kids - mine (4 also) love it when their Dad plays games with them.

And gaming isn't 'escaping reality' any more than watching TV, going to a concert, movie, or sporting event, drinking, etc.

What PC games do you play?

I mostly play battlefield 2142 (online) and the different mods that are associated with it. Right now there is a mod called first strike that is just like a star wars game but using the BF 2142 engine. Oh yeah, the mod is free. I also play madden, overlord and BF2 w/ associated mods.
