McNabb plays the race card

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

McNabb plays the race card

Post by ChocolateMilk »

I think this crap is getting old. Nobody is picking on this guy because he's black. People were picking on him last night cuz he sucked for 95% of the game. I agree that Manning and Brady dont get critisized as much as EVERYONE else in the league.. but thats because their teams have won 5 of the last 7 superbowls and have constantly made the playoffs and have played well. McNabb is just being retarded here.

McNabb is what? 1-6 in his last 7 starts.
That might be why he is taking criticism.
If he were yellow and purple and winning games no one would be criticizing him.

Rush Lardball was truly being racist a couple of years ago when he criticized McNabb, but everyone else does because he hasn't got the job done. Jay Schroeder has the highest winning percentage as Redskin QB that any other under Coach Gibbs, and he got dumped by the team because he couldn't get it done. Even with Manning's awesome individual numbers, the knock was he can't win the big one. How did he shut them up? He won the big one. Go away McNabb.

What was controversial about Rush Limbaugh wasn't that he criticized McNabb, it was that he criticized the media for liking McNabb based on skin color. The response to that was that there was no evidence that the media "liked" black QBs more than white QBs or wanted them to succeed for racial/social reasons.

In fact, what McNabb is saying in that ESPN article is no different, except that it's from the other perspective: apparently the media does treat blacks differently than whites. McNabb is in a much better position (e.g., actually being black, actually being a QB in the NFL) than Rush to say those things, but I'm still disappointed that he pulled the race card, because ultimately I don't think it's true.

I tend to have sympathy for the guy, though. I think that McNabb has been both highly overrated at some times and expected to do more than one player can do at other times. He's usually made the centerpiece no matter what, and that's the price of playing QB for the Eagles.

Anyone remember how much of a big deal the media made about Doug Williams being "the first black quarterback" to win a SuperBowl? I don't remember hearing about Doug Williams without that phrase being added on. I also don't recall Doug Williams or anyone else playing the race card at the time. At least not about that.

Jimmy "The Geek" Snyder played the race card but that was about an entirely different issue.

Rush was right on the money with his comments (at the time) and he got fired for saying exactly the type of thing ESPN hired him to say! Go figure.

ESPN hires a pompous, opinionated, controversial jackass ... and he stirs up controversy. Hard to figure, isn't it?

I agree with McNabb 100%. Black QBs are definitely discriminated against! Look at last night's game....."White Lightning" dropped that pass just to make McNabb look bad! Shame on you, "White Lightning"!

I kind of agree with McNabb. Manning was not criticized before the colts won the superbowl, the way McNabb has been. Everybody was pressed for manning back then and for good reason. McNabb has been given one good weapon, brian westbrook. The recievers dont get open...look what he did with owens. McNabb deserves the benefit of the doubt from philly fans while he recovers.

BTW i dont think McNabb was talking about this season...I think he's referring to his experience in the NFL overall. ( Philly fans are capricious)

I am a redskins fan but I've always given McNabb his props, because he deserves it after dominating our division for years.

Look, people are loosing touch with the context of the question DM was responding to. This was about his entire career.
Despite an incredible HS quarterback career, only 2 colleges recruited him. The kind of stats he generated should have resulted in dozens of schools chasing him. Would that have been different were he white? Dunno.

If he were white, I doubt that the Rush controversy would have been an issue.

The reality is, color has played in the expectations on McNabb... over the whole of his career.

On the other hand, what is happening to him now is Philly being Philly... they are just nasty, ungrateful, unappreciative pigs. McNabb never really had a chance, no matter what he did, from the moment Tags announced that the Eagles had selected them with their first round choice... that was his very first encounter with the "boo-birds"...

I question the timing of McNabb's revelation that African-American QB's are under some sort of "other" scrutiny than their Caucasean counterparts. Why does he all of a sudden come up with this line of garbage now? He had an open forum to discuss this type of issue when Rush Limbaugh made his idiotic comments about McNutcase!! Perhaps McNabbs argument would hold water 15-20 years ago, but there's been a whole lot of African-American QB's come and gone over the last decade or two.

This race card crap is an outrage, and he should be ashamed of himself for saying this. This is a complete and utter disrespect of the other African-American QB's that are either in the NFL or were in the NFL.

I don't buy his stuff one bit, and it seems McNutcase is trying to rally some support for his sorry crap in light of his dwindling popularity and pathetic play!!

What a moron!!

What a cry-baby this guy is!! I actually gained some respect for him in the wake of the whole Rush Limbaugh debacle, and now all of a sudden he brings the race card, coincidentally right as the fans, the media, and the rest of the NFL World are starting to question his ability!!

I wonder does he want some WHINE with that cheese!!!

Exactly. Personally I disagreed with Rush that McNabb was overrated because every year he just owns us (until Monday, ka ching!). Maybe if I weren't a Redskin fan I'd have agreed with him. But his comment was about the press. Unfortunately for him the press reports the story. Then again he knew what he was doing when he did it, I can't shed any tears for him.

Peyton doesn't play in Philly. If he did the EGirl idiots known as fans would have been all over him. He plays in Indy, where they barely care about the NFL. It isn't a NFL town!

If I had to pick who was closer to the truth, Rush or McNabb, because both were off the mark. I would say Rush was closer to the truth. It is all how the wind blows. The Media will push whomever they can use to sell products!

McNabb deserves the respect people have been giving him because he simply has been performing at a high level for many years.

I agree that a large part of it is the philly fans, but it is also everywhere else.

Countertrey is right the question was about his career...not the current situation. I dont think the timing is suspicious by any means. McNabb had that interview before the 0-2 start the eagles had. Its from Real sports with brian gumble.

I have a problem with people blasting someone for calling out racism (as subtle and unconcious as it may be) and dismissing it as "pulling out the race card."

By the way I think things have gotten better for black QBs thanks to him and McNair perfoming the way they have over the past decade.

This is all a gray area...just how people perceive him depends on who you ask.

The only distinction there should be is good vs. bad quarterbacks. McNabb has not been good for several games. That has nothing to do with the color of his skin. His frustration is getting the best of him on all levels.

i think Vince Young puts it best

"That is his opinion. I really feel like myself, black or white quarterbacks, we all go through something because that is the life of a quarterback,'' Young said Wednesday. "You have to be able to handle all the pressure and you have to be able to handle the losses and you have to be able to handle the media saying this about you.

"If you can't handle it, then you have to get off that position and go play something else.''

There wasn't anything idiotic about what Rush said.

Was McNabb overhyped at the time? Most definitely! Go back and look at the sats. He was off to a herendous start to that season and all his prior seasons had been had been average at best, but he was considered a Superstar.

Does the media overhype black QBs. Name two white non-SB winning QBs that have been sponsored by as many products as Vick and McNabb have. Heck, Vince Young is on the cover of Madden and hasn't even completed a full season, so was MaNabb, as well as Culpepper. See a trend here. No Peyton, No Brady, No Aikman :puke: . I can't remember a single white QB ever being on the cover of Madden.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. Do black QBs get labeled "athletes" and face more scrutiny because they are black? Probably.
Do they reap the marketing benefits of being a black QB? Definitely.

Exactly, he'd only thrown 71 touchdowns and scrambled for 14 more before 2003, a guy who averaged 21 touchdowns per season with (at that point) no real running game and (still) no solid wideouts was definitely overrated. I mean who needs 21 touchdowns a season? Oh and he'd also thrown for a totally lame just under 10,000 yards at that point and rushed for over 1,800 yards. I'm with Rush, an average of 2,500 yards passing, 400 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns while completing over 55% of your passes per season is LAME. Oh, also, the fact that Donovan was getting sacked about 35 times a season was also totally his fault.

Doesn't McNabb have the 3rd hight winning % behind Peyton and Brady? He's a monster and wherever he goes, he's going to flourish. I really hope he goes to the Bears and gets a ring to silence the haters.

im pretty sure manning was getting more endorsements than McNabb even before his superbowl win...but i could be wrong.

The Black QB's get "hyped" and endorsements mostly because of their running scrabling ability it makes them exciting to watch...not because they are black.
