"Character Comes First"

Post by Justice Hog »

....is what Joe Gibbs is saying about the type of player he is looking for in the draft.

The 3 things Gibbs is looking for (in order):

1. Character;
2. Football smarts; and
3. Talent.

Because of that, I feel comfortable saying that there is absolutely no chance the Redskins will be drafting Kellen Winslow, Jr. While he certainly is talented, Winslow does not have the type of "character" that Gibbs wants for his football team. Rumor has it that Snyder likes Winslow...but, ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake about it: This is JOE GIBBS' team this year!

Enter Sean Taylor.

This guy has the skill, the speed, and the "footbal smarts" that Gibbs wants. If he's available at #5, my bet is that the Skins draft him.

If Taylor is gone, my bet is that the Skins will trade down...and eventually sign either Tommie Harris or Kenechi Udeze. I, for one, would prefer seeing Udeze in a Redskins uniform next year...but, if I had my choice, I'd rather see Taylor.

That being said, please don't bet the house on the Skins drafting Winslow. It just ain't gonna happen.

Forget the smarts part with Winslow. I read on espn insider that Winslow scored an 11 on the IQ test that players entering the draft take. Most guys score around a 21. 10 is barely literate.

Not to mention the potential Poston factor. After the whole Arrington screwup I can't believe players would want them to represent them.

I know Winslow personally...I've met him at a few party's and stuff when he used to live in San Diego where he's from...I've played against him too. he's a jack ass. I hate cocky people and he's gotta be the worst...even if he is a redskin, i'll despise him just like a did deon when he came to the redskins. Winslow doesn't even have POTENTIAL to be a class act and a non selfish player. believe that

I've never met him, but I think the knock on Winslow is a bit overblown. By far, the "signability factor" is largest with him because of the Postons. It's a poor choice of agents, if/when he signs on with them.

Winslow's eruption in front of the camera probably will hurt him. The son of a superstar, with talent... it would be tough not to be a bit cocky.

All that said - Sean Taylor would be the best fit. If he's still there at 5, or may drop down below the 5th spot if someone reaches for Gallery or jumps to get Eli or Big Ben/ a top WR...
Taylor might not fit with a team's need until the Skins could slide back and grab him near the 10th spot... I hope :0-

UM may not be the place if your looking for character. I wouldn't classify Lewis, Portis, Sapp, Winslow, and other as great citizens. But they are good football players. I heard many here say they don't care about character, I for one do, and I know Gibbs does. I remember when Manning and Leaf were coming out and Polian was trying to make a choice in the end he said they were both gifted physically, so we went with the better person. We all know how that turned out

Didn't Mike Seller ger busted for selling cocaine and marijuana 2 or 3 years ago? Even so, Gibbs signed him. Yet, you guys say Gibbs won't take Winslow because of his character. I'm not aware of any off the field problems with KW2.

I don't think Winslow's character or percieved lack therof will prevent the Redskins from selecting him.

Druggies and drug dealers are fine, but I don't think Gibbs wants any "soldiers" on the team. Especially if Poston is the the soldier's agent.
