Cover 3 and the CB's Cushion

Post by steve09ru »

a look our our cover 3 and why there is a lot of cushion being given

i tried loading it up here but it wouldn't continue over

Again, in our case, we don’t have to worry (as much) about Carlos Rogers, since he’ll have underneath help from the outside LB/Nickel CB, which allows him to play with the 100 yard cushion he is comfortable using

looks like it's not his call and somebody isn't shifting over quick enough underneath

The cover 3 requires the field to be split into thirds (this allows LL to play in the box for run support). The corners could play closer to the line but require them to do more back peddling to cover their zones. Playing tighter on the line would eliminate the 5-7 outs but if the corner bites on a double move there is no catching the receiver. basically they can play up or back. GW prefers the bend but don't break route so the corners play back. If you notice when healthy Spring also plays off the line bit not as far back. If GW were comfortable with the CBs he'd play a cover 1 and let Taylor roam with LaRon in run support. I think they are all derivatives of the 46 and from there you'll always have trouble with a QB that has a quick release unless the corners play up. My 2 cents

Holy cow! That's the most detailed post-game analysis I've ever seen. I love the explanation of the scheme. Any idea who this guy is and what his qualifications are?

Thanks for posting!

Nice...but what about a BUMP at the line of scrimmage? This could totally disrupt the WR from making his route..... 5 yard BUMP.....come on guys...

In a cover 3 "Umbrella" defense, the cornerbacks are 7 yards behind the receivers. Since you can only legally bump within 5 yards, they would be flagged for illegal contact.

Yup. If he's close enough to bump, he's not in cover 3...

what I got out of that was that Carlos Rogers is an even worse corner than I thought... I like the picture with Smoot on 3rd and 5 standing at the sticks (7 yards off the receiver)... if you could see Rogers, he's 10 yards off the receiver and starting to back pedal before the ball's even snapped....

That's all you got? You didn't read very much then, the cushion Carlos leaves is both one of necessity (the author doesn't have much faith in his playing bump and run) and design, owing to the cover 3.

Rogers seems to have a lack of self-confidence more than anything else. He is obviously not that much slower than most receivers but at the same time when the Redskins are keeping the Safeties "in the box" it leaves the corners "on an island" and I think Carlos is still worried about getting beat deep without any safety help.
(How's that for a run-on sentence)

I dont know that we can say he doesnt have any self-confidence thats just something we all like to throw out there .. I do agree that his problem is overcompensating (sp?) for the deep ball when hes left on an island .. he just doesnt want to make that mistake and get beat deep which would be costly to the team.. Im not ready to hate on him till he gets a few games in this year and has watched some film and made some adjustments

we all know or heard what he (Grampa 'Los) can do... ANy week now we will see it, but until he shows it, I'm sticking to what I've seen. Personally I think he is gunshy, he needs to unleash the beast within.

Yes Freddy does it too, but at least he can get there and drop an INT. Plus we've seen he can hold his own way back when, I think he still can, just ask him, he'll tell ya. He just needs to get more games in. While 'Los, has had so many games and has not had much impact.

exactly... the reason it's necessary for him to give a bigger cushion than Smoot or Springs, playing the same scheme, is because he has noconfidence in his ability to ba able to cover the deep third otherwise... which, in turn, leaves more ground for the guy underneath him to cover... than again, he has to work with the skill set he has... if he's going to get burned by using less cushion, then we'll just have to live with the cushion... hopefully it's just a matter of getting more experience/confidence...

carlos got there plenty times last year as everyone complained that he dropped int's....but his cushions are the scheme and he gave up 3 td's last year?
