This could explain the Patriots recent success

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NFL is looking into claims a New England Patriots employee was videotaping signals by Jets coaches on New York's sideline during the season opener.

Perhaps their 'superior talent' isn't quite what it seems. It's a whole lot easier to look like you're a good receiver when you know the play the defense is running. I think if this cheating is verified the Patriots need to be watched very carefully. This oversteps a lot of boundries and I'd question their recent success.

Well, this sucks. Now, I have to go out and hire a new photographer to follow Fios around...

I don't need this aggravation.

This is classless. I think now we know why the Patriots all the sudden became a great football team.

What bothers me even more than the cheating (if true) is the NFL's idea of punishment. What does taking draft picks next year do about wins this season by cheating? The new Commish should change this rule to forfeit of games AND loss of draft picks. That will prevent this type of cheating.

I live in NE and am really not a fan of the Pats as anyone who follows my predictions can tell much to my regret the last few years  However, I would have a hard time believing that there will be any basis to this - I would find it very hard to believe that they can get the plays into the offense (or the defense) in time. There is hardly any time and how do you know which of the people that are signalling in the plays are the correct plays and which one is the "dummy".

This team performs on the field too well to have to try and resort to any cheating or trickery and Mangini was on that sideline before he became a Jets coach.

I think that the Patriots problem this year will be that they have a bunch of players getting older and not a great deal of young talent behind them.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I might believe there is no truth to this rumor if this were not the Second Time the same Patriots employee has been investigated.

I understand that Goodell has determined that there is enough "evidence" to ask the Patriots to explain what was going on with this guy and a camera - I hope that they make an example of them - couldn't happen to a better group of guys

I just don't understand why they think they could get away with this and were apparently already caught trying this with the Packers

Everyone is always trying to steal signals but most people I have spoken to about lip reading and such say that there really is not enough time to do all that much with it except that all NFL coaches are absolutely paranoid about it

Like I said - I hope Goodell hits them hard

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, according to league sources.

Now we also hear that BB has contacted Goodell and apologised  I guess we will shortly find out by the severity of the "punishment" from Goodell as to how serious the NFL is about punishing teams that have already been warned not to do something  Especially when it one of their so called glamour teams

Maybe he should have apologized to the Jets and the Packers first. In any case, it doesn't change the outcome of the games now. But the Commisioner could. We'll soon see just how big a pair Roger Goodell has ...

So this is how the Patriots have been winning.

Can't wait to see what Goodell does. Hopefully, he does more than just take away a draft pick from them.

They should have to give up the win to the Jets. And BB should be suspended for 4 games AND lose some draft picks. I understand trying to get an edge on a team but that is disgusting. The Pats Suck.

L Tomlinson and Brett Favre had the funniest press conferences on this cheated-got caught episode.

LT said: "if you are not cheating, you are not trying hard enough. They live by that mantra."

Man, this game between San Diego and NE on Sunday is going to be brutal. Both sides will be pumped up.

Brett said: "It is a definite advantage." (to know the signals in advance).

But he mocked the attitude and I really think that his sense of humour was perfect after that.

I do expect punishment from Goodell but I do not expect it to be too harsh because he has felt the criticism levied against him as "Mr. Punishment"
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

My question is why steal Defensive signals? Did Brady need the help?

The fact that this is a good question, poses a shadow on the magnitude of their success over recent years. Clearly T. Brady and the Patriots are an elite team in the League. They can be successful -without- breaking the rules. Sadly, this episode only tarnishes to some extent their reputation.

The fact of the matter is that some teams interpret "gaining competitive advantage" in different ways, some of them "bending the rules" or "exploring the edge of the rules". I am sure that other teams may have tried to look at the opponents signals.

Have you ever noticed how often coaches block their faces with the play board? The reason for that is that it is known that they try to avoid an opponents from reading their lips while sending a play.

The fact of the matter is that this action is against the rules. They were caught. They should and will be penalised for it. Their reputation has suffered more than any penalty the NFL can impose on them.

Then you have to look at other things like if this has been going on for years did ND, NYJ, and the Browns get the coaches that they thought they were hiring.

Maybe he didn't get the memo

And, a memo from Ray Anderson, NFL head of football operations, to head coaches and GMs on Sept. 6, 2006 said: "Video taping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

Goodell should suspend Belichick two or three games and take a couple of draft picks (maybe for a few years but not in the first or second rd).

IF this proves to be true, Bill Belichick should be terminated and banned from the NFL. Cheating must not be allowed.
